Set against the assassination of JFK, a poignant and evocative crime novel that centers on a desperate cat-and-mouse chase across 1960s Americaa story of unexpected connections, daring possibilities, and the hope of second chances from the Edgar Award-winning author of The Long and Faraway Gone. Frank Guidrys luck has finally run out. A loyal street lieutenant to New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello, Guidry has learned that everybody is expendable. But now its his turnhe knows too much about the crime of the century: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Within hours of JFKs murder, everyone with ties to Marcello is turning up dead, and Guidry suspects hes next: he was in Dallas on an errand for the boss less than two weeks before the president was shot. With few good options, Guidry hits the road to Las Vegas, to see an old associatea dangerous man who hates Marcello enough to help Guidry vanish. Guidry knows that the first rule of running is "dont stop," but when he sees a beautiful housewife on the side of the road with a broken-down car, two little daughters and a dog in the back seat, he sees the perfect disguise to cover his tracks from the hit men on his tail. Posing as an insurance man, Guidry offers to help Charlotte reach her destination, California. If she accompanies him to Vegas, he can help her get a new car. For her, its more than a car its an escape. Shes on the run too, from a stifling existence in small-town Oklahoma and a kindly husband whos a hopeless drunk. Its an American story: two strangers meet to share the open road west, a dream, a hopeand find each other on the way. Charlotte sees that hes strong and kind; Guidry discovers that shes smart and funny. He learns thats she determined to give herself and her kids a new life; she cant know that hes desperate to leave his old one behind. Another rulefugitives shouldnt fall in love, especially with each other. A road isnt just a road, its a trail, and Guidrys ruthless and relentless hunters are closing in on him. But now Guidry doesnt want to just survive, he wants to really live, maybe for the first time. Everyones expendable, or they should be, but now Guidry just cant throw away the woman hes come to love. And it might get them both killed.

I‘m 14 books away from meeting my GR goal of 2019. It‘s possible I‘ll make it but it‘s equally possible I won‘t. 😆

This week was a great reading week. Out of five books, two were five stars! P&P and Portrait of a Murderer blew me away, they‘re that good.

Cinfhen How was If You Tell?? 1d
Cinfhen And The wives??? I was debating adding it to my BOTM box (edited) 1d
Cinfhen What‘s your goal?? I set mine always on the lower more conservative side/ I don‘t really care about the quantity as much as the quality 1d

LeahBergen I so enjoyed that Anne Perry bio. Oh, on a side note ... I was just reading about this book 👇🏻 and wondering if you‘ve read it? I may need it! 1d
Reviewsbylola Oooooh just by the cover, that one looks pretty well done. I will have to buy it. 😆 Thanks for the heads up! @LeahBergen 19h
Reviewsbylola If You Tell felt a bit repetitive. There was so much abuse, and the author laid out every detail in a matter of fact way. Idk, it got old after awhile. The Wives was compulsively readable and I really enjoyed it, however it‘s probably best to get it from the library. @Cinfhen 19h
Reviewsbylola My goal is 200. Which I came close to last year. But I don‘t let it pressure me so if I don‘t make it, I don‘t mind. @cinfhen 19h
Cinfhen I saw on my GR that last year I read the most books at 173. I think I‘m only going to get to around 160 this year 18h
Cinfhen But both years I set my goal around 120 🤪 18h

This novel really surprised me. I don‘t typically like historical fiction, but this was truly rooted in reality and human experience. A bold housewife fleeing an unhappy domestic situation crosses paths with a mobster during the JFK assassination. I loved this crime story, love story, and just overall story of characters. I didn‘t think this would be my cup of tea, but wow. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#BOTMBUDDYREAD FINAL THOUGHTS???

Anything stay with you?
Anything you learned ?
Need to discuss ??

Do you look at the assassination differently now?

Mitch Really liked this pick - i probably wouldn't have read it if it wasn't for this group - and i enjoyed it - another #blameitonlitsy ! Love the characters and thought the historical setting was really pitch perfect! 3w
Librarybelle It turned into a good read for me! While it has the assassination as the backdrop, it hasn‘t really changed my thoughts or feelings on the assassination. Instead, I will take more of the “mobster feeling with a more human touch” away with me. I picked it up from #BOTM for the historical aspects, but honestly not one I would read on my own normally. Thanks ladies! 😁 3w
Sargar114 @Librarybelle me too! I enjoy things of the Kennedy era, and while that‘s the backdrop, it‘s not really the bulk of the story. Not one I would normally read, but a fantastic story that I really enjoyed. And of course the discussions 🥰 3w

The Epilogue - THE GIRLS.

It was fun to have a wrap up. The girls called their mom a force of nature and didn‘t really remember this week with Frank. Did you like the ending?

AmyG I loved hearing that this decision worked out for Charlotte and the girls! 3w
TheBookHippie @AmyG Meee too!!! Phew!!!! Also your package arrived made me teary that was sooo sweet. 😭😭❤️ 3w
Jess861 I loved this ending - it was perfect. It was interesting to see how the girls turned out and how the week really had no impact on them. 3w
See All 12 Comments
TheBookHippie @Jess861 I think that‘s the way a lot we as parents think it‘ll affect the kids when usually they have zero recollection . The girls always felt safe. They got beautiful lives. A great testament to Charlotte. 3w
CoffeeNBooks I was very glad that they made it out alive and were able to move on with their lives! 3w
RachelAmphlett When I first finished it, I felt the ending was a bit abrupt but it stayed with me for days afterwards. Really enjoyed it. 3w
Mitch Great ending - i didn't see it turning out that way - but know I know - i can't see any other way it could have ended! 3w
Librarybelle I agree with everyone - good ending! 3w
Sargar114 I loved this perspective. I agree with @TheBookHippie as parents it‘s easy to fall into the “how will this impact them” and over worry when in the long run, it worked out and they‘re fine. I enjoyed the “what was mom thinking?” Line about hitching you with the “Good Samaritan”. It‘s nice to think that was in part Frank‘s legacy. I also enjoyed that the girls as adults still were true to character. 3w
AmyG @TheBookHippie I am so happy you got it...because I lost the tracking receipt. Now I don‘t have to worry. 3w
Mdargusch I loved that they couldn‘t remember that week. Loved the ending and the book! 3w

Until he was no more were you holding out hope for Frank? For him and Charlotte ? Do you think it was just ? Are you glad the book didn‘t end there?

AmyG Yeah, I was sort of hoping for the happy ending. But so is life, right? 3w
Jess861 A happy ending is always nice but I think it fit the book to end how it did. Happy for some, not for others. 3w
TheBookHippie @AmyG I was hoping he‘d get to live, but I knew better. 3w
See All 14 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I was afraid that Charlotte and her daughters were going to end up dead because of their brief association with Frank, and I was nervous to read the last section because of that. So, I'm very glad it ended well for them. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes!! Of course I wanted a happy ending!! I knew there wouldn‘t be, but I held out hope!! I wanted to throw the book!! 🤣🤣 3w
RachelAmphlett @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks me too! I wanted ALL the details about what happened to Frank! 3w
Mitch @CoffeeNBooks I was too! I would have hated a happy ending - the rest of the book was just too nuanced to go that way in the final chapter. I think it was good to see Charlotte survived and Frank give humanity hope by showing were capable of change! 3w
Librarybelle I just knew Frank‘s end would not be a happy ending. So glad Charlotte and the girls were safe at the end! 3w
Sargar114 I wanted the happy ending for Charlotte. I was pumped when she was packing up and leaving. @CoffeeNBooks I was also terrified the worst was going to happen. I would have loved to have seen more of her life with Margaret and her getting her feet on the ground. I had set hope for Frank, but was satisfied with how it ended and agree the only chance of the girls‘ survival was with Frank‘s death. 3w
AmyG @CoffeeNBooks I was also so afraid they would be killed. And Frank would live. The reverse of What happenned. 3w
Mdargusch I really thought he would make it out of the country. I‘m still surprised they didn‘t go after Charlotte. 3w
TheBookHippie @Mdargusch I thought that too everyone in direct contact died but maybe it was a missed option, they just forgot... So crazy in that time I think their focus was covering the immediate threats. (edited) 3w
Sargar114 I think you‘re right @TheBookHippie that the only people with ties to the mob who knew about Charlotte and the girls specifically were frank and the other weird teenagers, so essentially the danger to them died with Frank. 3w

#BOTMBUDDYREAD #9

Franks childhood revealed a bit. His sisters death by his fathers hands. Is this what made him Frank a mobster? Did his guilt propel him to his current lifestyle? Was he in a fog until Charlotte and then it was too late? different childhood different outcome ?

AmyG I don‘t know if it made him a mobster but perhaps because he left home young he fell in with certain people in order to survive. But I think his final decision had to do with him not being able to save his sister...but he could save Charlotte and girls. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I do think that his childhood could have molded him into the person he became and that not being able to save his sister contributed to his decision to save Charlotte and her girls. 3w
Mitch Yeah - it think being alone and needing to survive outside the home as a teen meant he was super vulnerable to one form of vice or another - to survive. 3w
See All 6 Comments
Mitch @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I definitely feel his childhood might have helped him compartmentalise his emotions and detach himself from violence 3w
Sargar114 I agree again. I got the feeling since he left home so young (since he couldn‘t take his sister) he would have had to do what he needed to survive and that likely meant falling into the mob scene from early on. So I imagine he was already in it when she died. 3w

Seraphine. What do you make of her what do you think her part was -don‘t you wish there was a book about her story ?? Was she trying to kill him or save him?

Jess861 Personally, I think she tried to save him (from the social queues Frank and Seraphine gave each other when he turned himself in). I would read a book on Seraphine - you could go so many places with her character. 3w
AmyG I felt there wasn‘t enough about her. I never really got a handle on who she was. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I wanted more about her! She was intriguing! I definitely think she was trying to help Frank with her comments. 3w
See All 7 Comments
Mitch Yeah- i'm not sure I was interested in her too much really - didn't have enough to have a handle on her. She was elusive and served as a good plot device....she was interesting in her role as a woman in the mob family though 3w
Sargar114 I would read a book about her and her backstory. I agree, she was giving him tipoffs for him to try and save himself. But like anyone in that world it seems, doing just enough to not implicate herself. 3w
Librarybelle I‘d love to know more about her! 3w
Mdargusch I think she really liked and admired Frank I love that the author added such a tough broad to the mob. 3w

Charlotte winning against her attack by Barone. “At some point soon all this would overwhelm her whatever black magic that she was using to keep away the panic the fear, soon it would vanish with the thunder clap, afterwords she be lost, not be able to remember her name...soon but not yet.” Is this how adrenaline works? Strong until it‘s all over then collapse? Why do you think it‘s written for us? This explanation of aftermath?

Mitch I think that focus on getting out alive and protecting her children had the effect of making her truly super human 3w
Sargar114 I think this is exactly how it worked. I doubt she relaxed even a little until she was on that bus to LA. I go back to Evelyn Hugo and her reference to the “luxury of panic” 3w
Librarybelle Adrenaline worked well for Charlotte - fight or flight instincts kicked in, and she had one goal, to keep her kids safe. Bravo to Charlotte! 3w

3w
Mdargusch She definitely got super strength through adrenaline and fear, but if Barone was full strength... thank goodness for infections. 3w
TheBookHippie @Mdargusch RIGHT??? Thank goodness he was ill and his hand non functional !! 3w
Sargar114 @Mdargusch very much so! The fact that he was sloppy and not full strength definitely leveled the playing field. Made it more believable that that scene could happen the way it did as well. 3w

Back at Ed‘s...him wanting one of the little girls and then joking ?! Sadistic? Leo all of the sudden with the gun?! Frank walking out alive?! Was that intense or what? Anyone see that coming ? YIKES.

AmyG I kept thinking, through all this, of Mo Greene and Vegas...from The Godfather. Nothig suprised me. It was the mob. All if it was crazy. 3w
TheBookHippie @AmyG ME TOO!!!! now I want to watch all the Godfathers . But crazy -yes. 3w

Mitch @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It was weird - it was so tense and then Leo came on the scene and i couldn't help feeling - nooooo - dont tell me the butler did it. and i was momentarily mad for such a cliched ending! 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Mitch yes!!!! Exactly!!! 3w
Sargar114 @Mitch while cliche, I still get like it worked and in that scene anyone can turn on a moments notice so I was shocked but not upset about it. Pretty sure I let out an audible, No with a gasp and then had to reread to make sure I read that right. 3w
Sargar114 Also, the whole thing with Ed was creepy, I think if Frank agreed to giving him a girl Ed would have accepted 😡🤮 3w

Barone. Although he and Frank are alike, do you feel Frank is a better man, do you like him more? And is Barone a monster? Is this because we “know” Frank and have seen a softer side of him? Do you think if you knew the lives and backgrounds of people you believe are monsters you would change your opinion of them? Is there always a backstory?

AmyG Of course I like Frank better as we see the other side of him. We don‘t see thatof Barone. Barone is who Frank was....now we see who Frank is. I always think there is a backstory to everyone. To me it‘s a person‘s past history which shapes who they are today. Backstories can be good or bad. 3w
Jess861 Barone is basically a serial killer employed by the mob. Barone clearly is missing any type of empathy or the like within his being. His backstory could definitely have a part in making him this way. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Barone is a monster. Of course Frank was no choir boy, but Barone killing Theodore showed that he had no heart whatsoever. 3w
See All 11 Comments
TheBookHippie @Jess861 I think so too! 3w
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think @Jess861 is correct he‘s most likely a serial killer. 3w
Mitch @AmyG said so well Amy! I think Barone - as a character - was there to remind us of who Frank really was... to show perhaps just how far we, as humans, are capable of change?? 3w
Sargar114 I think they‘re similar, but at different points in their lives. As we saw early on, Frank turned on Mick without a second thought (don‘t think twice 😂). I don‘t know if the story is much different if the roles were reversed and Frank is chasing Barone. 3w
Librarybelle Yes, @AmyG , our backstory of Frank helps us shape our thoughts of him as a person. He comes out of this novel as more human, whereas Barone is a monster. @Mitch ‘s comment takes that one step further - I like the idea that Barone served as a way to show who Frank really was, but also to show we‘re capable of change. 3w
AmyG I agree with all of you. Frank could be Barone or Charlotte. He chose Charlotte. 3w

Cindy spooked Charlotte enough to wake her up. She is still grateful for Frank and her time with him. But she needs to go...Do you think she realizes the truth or senses danger? Have you had a relatable moment ? Is it a mother thing? Intuition alone?

Jess861 I think Charlotte realizes there is more than Frank than she knows and also realizes that she doesn't want to be in the same type of situation that she has just left. Cindy was her wake up call that she had left behind her own life to do better for her and her daughters and she was falling back into old habits. 3w
CoffeeNBooks I think Charlotte realizes that there's more to Frank's story, that she really doesn't know too much about him, and that it's completely crazy that he invited them to go to Vietnam with him since they barely knows him. And I agree with @Jess861 that she left Dooley so she could have some independence, and making plans with Frank would be going in the opposite direction. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes, her encounter with Cindy was a wake up call! A definite red flag 🚩!!! 3w

TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks RIGHT?! That girl was FREAKY!!! Creeped me out!! 3w
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks Fry pan into fire!!!!! Literally!!!!! 3w
Mitch Cindy was the one character i didn't like.. im not sure she played enough of a role to be useful... i think Charlotte was fine coming to her realisations on her own! 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookHippie I felt like she was in a cult!!! 3w
Sargar114 I agree Cindy is likely the trigger that all isn‘t what it seems. It seemed like Charlotte was always suspicious, but the incident on the boat was the final straw. I was cheering out loud when Charlotte was packing her bags. 3w
Librarybelle I think Charlotte already knew she wouldn‘t know Frank‘s world completely and had suspicions about his story. Meeting Ed made her more suspicious, and Cindy and her behavior pushed her in the right direction. Charlotte is smart and connects the dots well. 3w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Run run run !!!! 3w

A man finds himself in a dark wood and then he finds himself in a different even darker wood he becomes exasperated with the hand of fate. With every decision we create a new future. We destroy other futures...Frank and Leo talking, is Frank for the first time desperate to live his life ?

AmyG I just wonder if Frank sees the future he could have against the backdrop of his past. I wonder if he was ever able to see such a future until now. 3w
Jess861 I think this is the first time Frank really feared for his life which is what caused him to reevaluate. He might have thought that he knew what kind of work he was in but until his life was truly threatened he didn't realize what he was really into. 3w
CoffeeNBooks I completely agree with @AmyG! 3w
See All 8 Comments
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @AmyG I agree... I don‘t think he ever thought about it until now. He had found happiness on the other side and wanted to somehow keep that. 3w
Mitch @AmyG agreed - i think he seems to be a live in the moment kinda man - and if theres anything about the future its about just being grateful youve dodged it for another day. I got the sense he felt his future was heavy / almost a burden and now he could see a different - more positive way forward... 3w
Sargar114 I loved this quote and it‘s perfect for this book. I agree with everyone, Frank‘s survival in his former life always relied on him living in the moment, so no need to think about the future. Now that life is threatened and he was forced to look at how the other half lived in order to survive and realized maybe it wasn‘t so bad and could be what he in fact wanted or needed. 3w

Frank with the girls learning Shimmy Shimmy Cocoa pop. A sweet enduring moment . When reading did you think there is more to this man than we thought?

Fun video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mLjZRAXRRA

AmyG The book showed us how important his sister was to Frank. I kept feeling there was something “there” on that issue. Something unresolved. 3w
Jess861 Even though Frank lived the life he lived, it seems as though he was great with kids. Like @AmyG said - probably stems from his childhood and sister. 3w
CoffeeNBooks I think his time with Charlotte and her daughters was a time when he could step away from who he'd become, to maybe the man he would have been if he hadn't gotten involved in the mob. 3w
See All 8 Comments
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes, definitely and we saw that in the end... 3w
Mitch @AmyG I agree with you...i think he saw himself and his sister in the two girls and was desperately replaying his childhood 3w
Sargar114 I think part of the reason he possibly fell so hard for Charlotte was his relationship with the girls. I keep going back to Leo‘s quote, “With every decision we create a new future. We destroy all other futures.” Early in the story, family man was never a future for Frank, but now that was a real (to him) possibility. 3w
Librarybelle Definitely! He has many layers, not just his “day job.” I like @AmyG ‘s theory. 3w

We‘re you shocked how hard Frank fell for Charlotte?
What does that say about him?
Do you think it was real?

AmyG I had a feeling it was coming. Only because the women we had seen him withh before seemed to irritate him. 3w
Jess861 I felt it was a bit unrealistic considering his track record. I'm not surprised that the author went that way with the story line, I just didn't find it to be too likely. 3w
TheBookHippie @Jess861 I think sometimes it arrives in the most unexpected unrealistic time. 3w
See All 11 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I wasn't too surprised that he fell for her- she was so different from Seraphine and probably most of the women he knew in his line of work. And he could be someone else around her- he could be Frank Wainwright rather than Frank Guidry. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @CoffeeNBooks I agree.. he wanted a different life and he thought he could have it with her... 3w
Mitch I think it was inevitable - in terms of plot... I did think at time Frank came across as a lot older than he actually was and in my head it made sense when i thought of him as older, but a little less so when i remembered his age.... but maybe a life lived like his ages you more 3w
Sargar114 I agree, it seemed inevitable but I‘m also with @Jess861 in that it felt like the most unrealistic part of the story. I kept forgetting it was only a week with how strong those feelings were. It worked for the story and it‘s possible that his entire focus being his survival that it opened himself up for that intense of a reaction towards her and the girls. 3w
Librarybelle It seemed inevitable that he would fall for her, but in a way very unrealistic...the such deep love in such a short time. But, I also agree with @CoffeeNBooks and @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks , in that she was different, and he could be someone else with her. 3w
Mdargusch It was definitely unrealistic but I still enjoyed the plot. 3w
JaclynW @AmyG @TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @CoffeeNBooks @jess861 @Mdargusch @Librarybelle @Sargar114 @mitch I liked the way this part of the story went and I thought it was actually fairly believable. Believable because he has been spooked that his life may be ending and/or just beginning anew (second chance at life) and I think that can very easily drastically change a person's direction in life. 3w
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I think it comes at unexpected times sometimes especially when you shift focus. I agree with you. 3w

Centring on the assassination of JFK it‘s a surprisingly tender crime/thriller. With a cast of mobsters & vulnerable young women it would have been easy to have fallen into a plethora of cliches. But every character pops from the page - and has the ability to shock, surprise and show deep and complex emotions. The love story at the centre of the web of characters gives you hope that people can change however dark and violent the past.

What started as a meh read for me turned into a book worth finishing well past my bedtime. The Kennedy assassination is the backdrop for this story about hitmen and women who take a stand against 1960s housewife mores. It‘s gritty in its narrative, yet the book didn‘t feel too overly like a mobster read. Not my usual type of read, but I‘m so glad I could join in on the #BOTMbuddyread this month for this book.

I enjoyed this book much more than I anticipated. Not a genre I would normally pick up, and started out a bit slow for me but really picked up. It follows Guidry and Charlotte, both on the run who end up crossing paths and find something more than either expected. Quite a few twists and a beautifully developed story. I was incredibly satisfied while still wanting more. Highly recommended! Looking forward to the #botmbuddyread discussion.

The JFK assassination has just occurred and is the backdrop of the story as a mobster is on the run and a housewife who needs a change. The book is is well written and jumped from different characters story lines seamlessly. The characters were well developed and intriguing. The book is a page turner that kept me wondering what will happen next.

I‘ve been intrigued by the buddy reading of the tagged book this month. So when it was sitting in the library yesterday, I took it as a sign and grabbed it. It also works for today - a #papadontpreach moment 😊

JennyM @Kalalalatja @cinfhen and especially as Nov 22 is the day JFK was assassinated and that is what this book is about! 😯 4w
TrishB I‘ve looked at this one a few times! 3w
JennyM @TrishB I‘ve had it on the TBR for a long while, so glad to be finally getting to it. Hope you‘re on the mend, Trish. The lurgy sounds terrible 😘 (edited) 3w
Cinfhen That‘s right! I love when dates coincide ❣️I couldn‘t get into this book and returned it unread to the library 3w

This started as a historical fiction/noir mashup, which was good. Then it evolved into a good girl/damsel in distress meets bad boy/fugitive love story. And they‘re being pursued by a hit man. The different aspects of the story never gel. Not sure why this is ending up on so many end of year “best” lists. Is there payola in the publishing industry?

⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was one of my September 2018 #BOTM picks and I really enjoyed it until about 60% through. The JFK assassination plot involvement was really interesting and the plot moved fast, but I didn‘t like how Caroline and the girls don‘t meet Frank until the middle of the book. I appreciated Frank‘s hero arc at the end of the book, but I wasn‘t satisfied by the ending and I hated the epilogue, which created more questions instead of answers.

Frank knows too much about who REALLY killed Kennedy and is on the run from his fellow mobsters in the aftermath. Charlotte is fed up with the typical housewife life of 1960s Oklahoma. In this well-crafted, well-plotted story, the two are destined to collide and no one seems to be safe. The tension building is pitch perfect. Highly recommend. #BOTMBuddyRead

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Anything we‘ve missed?

Who is the top person here pulling all the shots making all these lives intertwine ?
Does life intertwine by one small decision making fate happen?
Are you liking the book better or worse ?!
Why did the author write this story do you think ?

Sargar114 I‘m enjoying this book much more than I was after the first section. I worry though because it feels like a story where anything could happen and that gives me all kinds of anxiety about what will actually happen. I‘m hopeful for Charlotte and the girls, but I just don‘t know. As for who‘s running the show, it‘s tough to tell. Ed seems like he has a lot of pull, but after the last correspondence with Barone there seems to be a bigger picture 1mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 It has far more layers than I ever anticipated . It is written very well. I can‘t wait to finish it. 1mo
kspenmoll I feel all kinds of anxiety reading it as well, and have had to put it down. I really have no clue how things will end. 1mo

Mdargusch This is such a good book! 1mo
Hooked_on_books Carlos and Seraphine seem to be the puppet masters here—everything goes back to them. I think this book is terrific. It‘s well-paced, had a very engaging plot, and subtle but clear character development along the way. Really good balance, masterful storytelling. 1mo
Librarybelle I'm enjoying it more than I did after reading the first section. It's compelling, and as @Sargar114 and @kspenmoll point out, very anxiety driven. 1mo

Sargar114 Yes...so much yes. I‘m so anxious and nauseous at the end of this section. 1mo
Mitch @Sargar114 It was hard to stop at my post it note - i really wanted to read on! 1mo
CoffeeNBooks Yes! I hate that Charlotte and her girls are mixed up with Frank, because I'm afraid things are going to end very poorly for them just because of their association with him, even though they don't know anything about who he really is. 1mo
kspenmoll Yes. I am afraid they will all be hurt, killed something. I cannot help but like this Frank though. 1mo
Mdargusch @Mitch I couldn‘t do it. I finished the book. 🙄 1mo
Hooked_on_books Yes. No one is safe here. “Nature red in tooth and claw” came to me early in the book and it‘s only getting more that way. I agree @Mitch , it was so hard to put down! And @CoffeeNBooks I have so much dread wondering what is going to happen to them. 1mo
Librarybelle Yikes! Either we're in for a lot of action in the last section, or the build up will culminate into nothing. The pieces are in place for one crazy ride in the last quarter of the book! 1mo
Mitch @Librarybelle I have my fingers and toes crossed for a dramatic - fitting finale! 1mo

The Cindy girl on the boat is so strange, burnt out, almost robotic, do you think the ghost was a murderer girl who talked ? Is it a forewarning?

Mitch She seemed completed drugged up and burnt out - a harsh reminder of what a groupie lifestyle can be... 1mo
Sargar114 I completely think the ghost was a murdered snitch, probably by Ed himself. I don‘t know if it‘s foreshadowing but it looks like Charlotte got the idea real quick 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Sargar114 I agree!! I bet she‘s thinking “get me off this damn boat!” 1mo
See All 9 Comments
kspenmoll @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks And she wanted Cindy away from her kids. 1mo
Mdargusch Yes. The murdered “ghost” definitely did something wrong. Cindy should be very scared. 1mo
Hooked_on_books I think this was the woman from the CIA who was bumped up from the secretarial pool to infiltrate the organization and Ed killed her. And Charlotte understands clearly this was a real woman. 1mo
Librarybelle Good connection, @Hooked_on_books ! I hadn't thought about that, only that the “ghost“ was someone murdered for doing something wrong or knowing too much. Makes sense to me! 1mo

Was Ed and his house of teenagers bizarre or what ? Did it help you realize the time we were reading about ? All the social issues happening at this time?

JaclynW CRAZ-I-NESS!! It does seem reflective of the time AND place. Hello Vegas! 🙈🙉🙊 1mo
Mitch It definitely placed the book again back in that time frame - it was sleazy, creepy and had a real menacing air over it.. 1mo
Sargar114 Such a weird moment...again agree with @Mitch such a dark tone to it all 1mo

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I was definitely freaked out by the frozen fish fight!!! 1mo
kspenmoll @Mitch @JaclynW @Sargar114 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I had to remind myself the time the book wS set in & all the changes on so many levels in society & culture in the 60s. Creepy says it. 1mo
Mdargusch It reminded me of Charles Manson and his creepy followers. 1mo
Sargar114 Yes @Mdargusch !!!!! 1mo
TheBookHippie @Mdargusch RIGHT??? There were several back then. Just creepy. @Sargar114 1mo
Hooked_on_books Completely creepy. And it says a lot about who Ed is, lest we forget how much danger both Frank and Charlotte are in. (edited) 1mo

The kid. The Green Book. Can you believe Barone shot him and left him in the ditch ??!?!?!?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Negro_Motorist_Green_Book

JaclynW This made me so sad! I thought they were developing a real relationship. It definitely shows who Barrone is though. I liked the kid. 1mo
Mitch I know - that was so distressing - he had so many dreams and aspirations for his life ahead of him... another greatly drawn side character 1mo
Sargar114 😭😭😭 I was shocked cause I hope for the best in people...but not surprised. So sad, I liked Theodore (not Ted or Teddy) 1mo

Sargar114 I agree with @JaclynW definitely showed Barron‘s character 🤮 1mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I was holding out a tiny hope as well. 1mo
CoffeeNBooks I wasn't expecting that at all, though I should have, considering what Barrone is like. 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I didn‘t see this coming... As mean as he is I thought he would let him go.. 😓😓😓 1mo
kspenmoll I was shocked & felt awful- as @Mitch said, a well drawn character. 1mo
Mdargusch That was the most cold hearted move ever. 1mo
Hooked_on_books I wasn‘t surprised at all. I felt from the first time they crossed paths that this kid was unlikely to survive. I‘ve seen references to the Green Book before. Great idea but it‘s a pathetic statement about our society that it would be needed. 1mo
Librarybelle I had a feeling this would happen, but it still hurt to read. 1mo

What did you think of Charlottes phone call to her Aunt! ? Is she becoming more of her old self, a new self or just gaining confidence? What about her Aunt?

I‘ll have your cupboard ready 🤣🤪.

AmyG Charlotte showed she had “moxy”. She confronted the aunt and gained respect. I got the impression the aunt likes strong women. I get the impression the aunt is a strong woman who doesn‘t live within the social norms of the time. (edited) 1mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I hope we get to find out!!! 1mo
JaclynW @AmyG That's exactly how I saw the aunt too. I think the second phone call proved that Charlotte was a lot like her aunt, thus the aunt's willingness to let her come stay. I would like to k ow more of her story too. I'm guessing they are two peas in a pod when it comes right down to it. 1mo
See All 13 Comments
Mitch @AmyG Agre - i think her aunt liked her more by the end of the conversation than she did at the start! 1mo
Mitch Im not sure Charlotte is going back to her pre-married self - i think she was too young at point to have that self formed....this seems a whole new Charlotte that has been in the making for a while. 1mo
Sargar114 I agree @Mitch Definitely a new Charlotte but someone that has always been there and is now forced to present herself. I too love the aunt, she‘s a no nonsense kinda gal so the first call was more of a get your life together and stop wasting my time. The second call was like, okay, you have a plan and you got the guts to pull it off, I can work with this! 1mo
CoffeeNBooks I think Charlotte is gaining confidence, and won't take no for an answer from her aunt. I think the aunt respects that. 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I really hope we get to see more of the aunt!! 1mo
kspenmoll @Mitch @AmyG @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Sargar114 @CoffeeNBooks Such a change from her first call. I think her aunt was surprised, then delighted in the new emerging Charlotte. 1mo
Mitch @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks yes! I bet she‘s got some stories to tell! 1mo
Mdargusch The aunt definitely appreciated her new found confidence. 1mo
Hooked_on_books @AmyG I tend to agree. Plus I think this part of Charlotte has always been there but she was never allowed to be this person. Now she is making her own decisions and finding her own way, allowing this more forceful self to come to the forefront. 1mo
Librarybelle Yes, @AmyG ...I think Charlotte's aunt likes strong women and was impressed with this side of Charlotte. I think Charlotte is gaining confidence in herself and in her situation. Confidence does amazing things. 1mo

What did you think of Frank and Charlotte sleeping together ? Did it free her? Or liberate her? Was it necessary for the story?

AmyG I think it was necessary. He was a one and done guy. But she held his interest. And yes, she could be more free. What did she have to lose? 1mo
RachelAmphlett I agree it was necessary from a story sense but I wonder if the tables are turning - does he need her more than she needs him? 1mo
TheBookHippie @RachelAmphlett I think so at this point. 1mo
See All 14 Comments
TheBookHippie @AmyG one and done 🤪 I think she intrigued him or reminds him of another life. 1mo
JaclynW @RachelAmphlett Yes, I think so too. 1mo
JaclynW @amyg @RachelAmphlett @thebookhippie I love seeing Charlotte discover herself. This was part of it I think 1mo
Mitch @RachelAmphlett I agree - I think she's finding her strength easily and her youthfulness and resilience are doing her good service. I did worry about the kids being on their own though.... 1mo
Sargar114 It felt inevitable, but I like that Charlotte seemed to be the one to initiate it. I agree with the others she‘s finding herself and her strength and Frank is also finding himself in a way. Maybe more a version of himself he never thought possible. 1mo
AmyG Good point @RachelAmphlett about him needing her more. Perhaps that will be his downfall? 1mo
Sargar114 @AmyG I can totally seeing it being his downfall. I‘d be surprised if he actually gets close to the plane to Vietnam 1mo
kspenmoll @Sargar114 I thought there sleeping together was inevitable but I too lived that she took the initiative herself & She is finding out who she is & puts that first. 1mo
Mdargusch I was shocked first of all since came from such a conservative life. It definitely liberated her from her past. 1mo
Hooked_on_books I think it was freeing for Charlotte and helps to show the evolution of Frank‘s character. I worry about how badly Charlotte is going to be hurt in the end. 1mo
Librarybelle I knew a relationship would begin. It's interesting to see how they are both using this as an opportunity to grow - we're seeing a more human side to Frank (the scene with Joan, his daydreaming of sorts about what life could be), and we're seeing Charlotte become a bit more liberated and in charge of her situation. 1mo

Franks interactions with Joan at the bus depot, did your opinion change of him? What affect will this have on the girls ?

AmyG Frank seemed like a bit of a natural (father). Be honest and distract. He seemed more kind in that moment. (edited) 1mo
RachelAmphlett I‘m frustrated that the story only alludes to Frank possibly having a family of his own in the past - I‘d like to know more about that and how whatever happened shaped him into who he is in this story. 1mo
TheBookHippie @RachelAmphlett I AGREE!!!!! Give me the backstory!!! 1mo
See All 12 Comments
JaclynW @RachelAmphlett @thebookhippie Yes!! I want to know! Do you think we will find out? @amyg I also think he seems like a natural. He seems like a real, decent guy...one who works with the mob 😬😈😁😱😆😉. 1mo
Mitch He's definitely not new to fathering! He did a great job - it was a super well written scene and its moments like that that really separate this book out from the mob hit / chase / on the run type books! 1mo
Sargar114 I agree @Mitch such a touching moment and it felt genuine. I didn‘t necessarily think of it as an allusion to his history but more of his growing affection for Charlotte and the girls. 1mo
CoffeeNBooks I like that the author gives more depth to Frank's character through this scene- it definitely makes you want to know more about who he is and what his background story is. 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Very touching moment that shows he does a have a heart!! I do want to know more about his background! 1mo
kspenmoll He really was a great “father” to them; he said he did not know how to relate to children so he chose to be who he was with them. 1mo
Mdargusch I agree @Mitch His understanding of children must mean there‘s family of some kind in his background. 1mo
Hooked_on_books @CoffeeNBooks Almost exactly what I was going to say. It was a really smart way to layer complexity into this character in a subtle way and a short space. 1mo

Guilt. “My philosophy is that guilt is an unhealthy habit- it‘s what other people try to make you feel so you‘ll do what they want -but one life is all we ever get as far as I know why give it away?” Frank is giving Charlotte this advice along with ‘don‘t think twice‘ by Dylan -a hugely popular song at the time. Did he learn this ? Did he live by this? should we?

The song :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Y3KfJs6T0

AmyG As a “mobster” I think Frank had no choice but to not think twice. Myself, I try not to second guess things. Make a decision and move on. Learn from it. But guilt? Ha. When I grew up it was considered a parenting skill. ;) 1mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I too -guilt a parenting skill, my great grandma told me to excel at guilt is to be a Jewish mother. 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️ 1mo
JaclynW @amyg @thebookhippie Guilt! Oh man! It's almost hard not to fall for it. 😬🤪 But I do agree with Frank's advice that guilt is used by others to get what they want - which may or may not lead to a win/win for all parties. We should take control and be aware of this type of manipulation (whether done knowingly or not). 1mo
See All 16 Comments
Mitch @AmyG Agreed! I think Frank is so used to looking at every angle - he's tired ! I too try not to second guess things - i trust my gut and i trust that whatever happens i'll make it work somehow! Guilt has a tendency to keep you living in the past i think. 1mo
Sargar114 I agree @AmyG again! That lifestyle doesn‘t really lend itself to people who second guess. As far as guilt, I find it funny Frank is telling her this when he‘s the one manipulating her to get what he wants. Part of it may be that he tells her not to overthink it for self preservation. 1mo
AmyG Hahahaha exactly @TheBookHippie. Guilt is in my Jewish genes. @Sargar Yes! About self-preservation. No room for guilt. (edited) 1mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 or so she doesn‘t go back or feel guilty about leaving her husband ? Or to not feel guilty about what she‘s doing..it‘s an interesting interlude. 1mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🤷🏽‍♀️ 🤦🏽‍♀️ I swear in motherhood I have it in spades 🤪 1mo
Sargar114 I thought that too @TheBookHippie I‘m really liking the multiple dynamics of this book, it‘s a pleasant surprise 1mo
AmyG @TheBookHippie 👊🏻🤣 1mo
CoffeeNBooks I think Frank has to live by this motto in his line of work. Otherwise, he wouldn't survive. 1mo
kspenmoll @CoffeeNBooks agree. The only way he can be part of the mob is to “ not think twice” & not give into guilt. 1mo
kspenmoll @JaclynW @TheBookHippie @AmyG @Mitch @Sargar114 Guilt is so difficult! As a mom it seems we all carry some- But mostly over the years I have come to let it go. I was raised Catholic & guilt & were big. I chose not to raise my son in that Church as his thinking is black & white enough. 1mo
Mdargusch I agree with you @CoffeeNBooks and @kspenmoll . He has to block the guilt out in order to survive. 1mo
Hooked_on_books Totally agree with @CoffeeNBooks @kspenmoll @Mdargusch —Frank pretty much has to live this way in his line of work. I was raised Catholic and felt a lot of guilt in my youth as a result but have learned to shake it off. I found this quote really compelling and think it‘s a good way to live, though it shouldn‘t be used as an excuse for criminal or unethical behavior. I think a balance is possible. 1mo
Librarybelle Yes to @CoffeeNBooks , @kspenmoll , @Mdargusch , and @Hooked_on_books ! Frank has to live by this motto, or face deadly consequences. 1mo

Shadows .Charlotte is fascinated by them and Frank then takes them on seeing them everywhere. A foretelling ? Does this feel like an elaborate chess game? Is he falling for Charlotte?

AmyG The shadows, to me, represent what they are running from...what lurks behind the scene. You can try to escape, but is always there. Yes, I think he is falling for her big time. Frank sees what could be...a different kind of life. 1mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I think the big time falling in love is happening -talk about bad timing !!! Running from their shadows I think too. 1mo
JaclynW @AmyG @thebookhippie Agreed. I love the shadows representation. 1mo
See All 18 Comments
Mitch @thebookhippie @amyg @jaclynw He's falling for her and the romance of having a family big time i think. Maybe he's liking playing the role of someone else - and maybe being with her removes him from the reality of the situation and his near death predicament. 1mo
Mitch @thebookhippie @amyg @jaclynw He's falling for her and the romance of having a family big time i think. Maybe he's liking playing the role of someone else - and maybe being with her removes him from the reality of the situation and his near death predicament. 1mo
Sargar114 He is absolutely falling for Charlotte as well as the girls I think. Good analogy on the shadows @AmyG I also think it‘s human nature for people to be more aware of something once it‘s pointed out to them. So I totally missed the shadows being something more. 1mo
JaclynW @Mitch Good point. Maybe it is a bit of a distraction too. 1mo
AmyG @Mitch I think what started off as something to disguise himself became a distraction...like you said. But now has become what could be...a possible future. 1mo
CoffeeNBooks I definitely think the shadows are foreshadowing- Charlotte eventually realized that she didn't know any more than what Frank showed her on the surface, but she knew there had to be more to his story in the shadows of his life. Frank is playing a game of chess, with his life and the lives of others, and there's more to it than just each move he makes. 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think he is totally falling for her and she is for him also, but she knows there is more to him than he is sharing... 1mo
kspenmoll @CoffeeNBooks I think too that the shadows are symbolic- both are living in them in a sense. I think he is falling for her, definitely. At first Charlotte & her kids were camouflage but now he seems to be enjoying being with them all. , I also like your idea that Frank is playing a game of chess, with all their lives. 1mo
kspenmoll @Mitch He is playing a role, which is why Charlotte senses there is more to him. And it can let him escape a bit from the reality if his situation. 1mo
Mdargusch Facing his mortality, I think he‘s thinking about all the things he‘s missed out on. Family life probably seems pretty good right about now. 1mo
Hooked_on_books It‘s a total game of chess! And he‘s playing against Carlos, Seraphine, Barone, Ed, and even Charlotte. I think he‘s falling for her inasmuch as someone who has hardened himself to emotion can. He certainly sees her as a person rather than a piece of meat, like he treated women in chapter one. 1mo
Hooked_on_books I think the shadows may represent that aspects of a person that we don‘t notice unless we truly look for them. Charlotte starts focusing more on the shadows as she understands she really doesn‘t know Frank—maybe she‘s trying to see his other aspects more clearly. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books Chess it is and so suspense filled!!!! I agree she is starting to really think. 1mo
Librarybelle Oh, they're falling for each other! I honestly didn't read into the shadow representation, but reading everyone's responses, it makes perfect sense. There is this build up happening...the last section we read has to be explosive! 1mo
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle I‘m staring at my book I‘m going to finish tomorrow when I‘m certain of no interruptions !!!! Ha. 1mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD #1
As we started this section ..
Frank “He felt another shiver” or memory when carrying the girls...Do you think Frank is subconsciously looking at his life closer knowing death may be imminent ?
Citing Dante and The Inferno. Thinking maybe he‘d make it out safely...Is he afraid do you think ? Has regrets? Or hoping for a different fate?

AmyG I am thinking this may remind him of childhood. It‘s obviously bringing up memories, perhaps one he has tried to supress. 1mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I wondered if fearing his life is ending his subconscious is working overtime .. 1mo
JaclynW @TheBookHippie I agree. Knowing death may be coming would mess with your head. Bringing back memories or trying to create new ones would be common I think. I see him doing both. 1mo

Sargar114 That‘s a great question! Very possible. I was thinking that the “family” life that he is having right now may be triggering the life he had growing up or the family like he didn‘t have growing up. Maybe why he gravitated toward the mob lifestyle to suppress those memories. 1mo
Mitch He knows his life is limited and perhaps senses this time he's sailing too close to the wind... maybe the shivers are memories of a former life before he got involved with the mob. I was wondering if he did actually have a family?? 1mo
AmyG Didn‘t he have some memories about his sister? 1mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG yes and her life. 1mo
CoffeeNBooks I think he knows death is a very real possibility at this point, but might be holding out hope that he can make it out alive. 1mo
kspenmoll @AmyG @JaclynW I agree. I wish he would give into those memories. I would like to know more how he became who he was. @Sargar114 @Mitch @CoffeeNBooks 1mo
kspenmoll @Mitch It never occurred to me to think he might actually have a family! 1mo
Mdargusch I agree @kspenmoll i never thought about his family either. I definitely think since he was on high alert, his senses were working over time. 1mo
Hooked_on_books I don‘t know if he‘s scared exactly, but certainly highly aware. I like your thought, @Mitch , I never thought of him having a family. And I agree with @CoffeeNBooks . 1mo
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books Right did he have a family and it was killed or help his sisters family and something happened ?!?!?! 1mo
Librarybelle My thoughts align with @CoffeeNBooks ...there is this slight hope he seems to have. 1mo
Mitch @Hooked_on_books yeah - there seems to be a real mournful feel about those but with him and the kids 1mo

This book is really dark in places, but sometimes the life choices of the characters bring forth ideas like this.
