A big-hearted, captivating, modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice, with hijabs instead of top hats and kurtas instead of corsets. AYESHA SHAMSI has a lot going on. Her dreams of being a poet have been overtaken by a demanding teaching job. Her boisterous Muslim family, and numerous (interfering) aunties, are professional naggers. And her flighty young cousin, about to reject her one hundredth marriage proposal, is a constant reminder that Ayesha is still single. Ayesha might be a little lonely, but the one thing she doesn't want is an arranged marriage. And then she meets Khalid... How could a man so conservative and judgmental (and, yes, smart and annoyingly handsome) have wormed his way into her thoughts so quickly? As for Khalid, he's happy the way he is; his mother will find him a suitable bride. But why can't he get the captivating, outspoken Ayesha out of his mind? They're far too different to be a good match, surely...

#VolumesAndVocals

One of my favorite Pride and Prejudice retelling, recently reread with the #PemberLittens 💜💛

I love how the book cover coordinates with the record cover for #AtLast by Etta James. Such a gorgeous song and this part especially matches Ayesha‘s story:

“I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I've never known, oh, yeah, yeah”

A modern Pride & Prejudice retelling set in Toronto‘s Muslim community. School teacher Ayesha is a poet at heart who gets guilted into helping the local mosque with a conference by her cousin, Hofsa. Unfortunately, now everybody thinks she‘s her cousin.
Traditional Khalid is also helping with the conference & slowly starts falling for “Hofsa” but things get complicated when his mom arranges his engagement to the real Hofsa.
Slow burn and adorable.

I am so behind in reviews and am determined to post one a day until I am current. This was a book that I read because of the #pemberlittens.A modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice that takes place in Toronto within a Muslim community. Ayesha is a school teacher with a desire to be recognized for her poetry. She is a modern woman who unexpectedly falls for traditional Khalid.Complications ensue when cousin Hafsa is engaged to Khalid.A fun read.

I enjoyed this novel, because it was so interesting to know about these immigrant Muslim families , how some of them integrated themselves better to a new culture without leaving their religious beliefs and traditions. Khalid and his mother were more traditional. I liked Ayesha, Nana popular/literary wisdom and Nani. Love the quotes and Ayesha poem and glad that the work discrimination was discussed and resolved. But⬇️

Gissy (Cont.) after I read some #Pemberlittens comments, I agree that some characters and actions were almost unreal but because this supposed to be a rom-com, it didn‘t bothered me. I read it as something funny “I chose to live (read) in a comedy, not a tragedy”. 😂I can‘t say how similar or not this novel is to Pride and Prejudice, I haven‘t read it, I have tried but is not my time yet to see myself finishing this novel😳🤷🏽‍♀️But I loved this one⬇️ 11mo
Gissy I think this is a good start/motivation to read the original novel. I enjoyed @Staycurious comments/posts and questions. It is really interesting to read others opinions and reactions even when I read the novel late, after the assigned date. For me, I enjoyed it 3.8/4⭐️

This was a unique Pride and Prejudice retelling from a Muslim perspective. I was interested by the conversation around religious values and how the world, even including people within the same community, can judge based on first impressions. The characters were only inspired by Austen's and they could be extremely frustrating at times with their miscommunication but overall I enjoyed the journey.

I feel about the same as when I read this 3 years ago, I really enjoyed this Pride and Prejudice retelling. Back then I said, “Loved the characters & the glimpse into a modern-day suburban Toronto Muslim community setting. Keeps to the spirit of the original but has its own clear voice.” (And I‘ll take the 🥑 🍞 too!) 😋

Fun to reread it at a #chapteraday pace with the #Pemberlittens. Thanks to @StayCurious for hosting! 💜

#Pemberlittens Ch.47-48 - All‘s well that ends well indeed. I think she tied up all the loose ends and gave a nice happy ending. Overall I enjoyed this book. It was frustrating at times but it definitely made me think and react and feel. That‘s the mark of a good book in my opinion.

BarkingMadRead I definitely enjoyed this one, lots of new things to learn and it was fun trying to figure out which character everyone was 12mo
vonnie862 I actually enjoyed this book as well! Like you, there were parts that were frustrating but I thinknit did a good job in capturing P&P and still be unique. Thank you so much for hosting!! 12mo

Ruthiella I definitely liked the Muslim perspective. I do think it would have been a stronger book if she‘d cut out a couple plot strands and given the characters a little more underpinning for their actions. But overall, it was entertaining. I think I‘d have benefited reading it all in one swoop. Then I might not have noticed some of the bits that niggled. Thank you for hosting and finding all the great memes! 😃👏👏👏 (edited) 12mo
Julsmarshall I enjoyed it too and welcomed the family dynamics and the Muslim perspective of love, marriage, and community. 12mo

#Pemberlittens Ch. 45-46:
Well well- Hafsa and Masood - ha it kinda works. And how is Ayesha going to support herself while she‘s overseas chasing the dream? Doesn‘t she still owe her uncle tuition money? He probably needs it back now. Will finish tomorrow!

BarkingMadRead Omg Hafsa can totally have Masood 🙄 12mo
StayCurious @BarkingMadRead watch them become a power couple lol 12mo
Ruthiella Hafsa and Masood? Seems a little convenient, but fine. I don‘t see why Ayesha can‘t get a permanent job teaching and write her poetry during the summer break. It seems a pity now to give it up since she‘s gotten the hang of it. 12mo

#Pemberlittens Ch.41-42: yes a makeover! Gotta do smth abt that scraggly beard at least lol.
Ha. Tarek will get his comeuppance. Do you think it‘s what he deserves? Or did Khalid and Idris go too far?

Ch.43-44: Hafsa is still a brat. I can‘t believe Ayesha is so forgiving. She‘s a better person than me. And good for Khalid for going through with Amir‘s plan. Sheila deserved worse, but it‘s a start.

Ruthiella Yeah, I don‘t know that I‘d forgive Hafsa so readily. 🙄 I like the makeover scene if only because it‘s a gender flip. Normally it‘s the woman who has to change her appearance. 12mo
peanutnine @Ruthiella I might have forgiven Hafsa if she actually acted contrite but it didn't seem like the experience changed her at all 🙄 12mo
See All 8 Comments
peanutnine Also, I liked how they got revenge on Tarek but thought giving out his home address was a little over the top 😬 12mo
Ruthiella @peanutnine Agree. I don‘t think she‘s learned a thing. But if she‘s Lydia, then that‘s true to her character. 12mo
vonnie862 Oh man, I would have dropped Hafsa if I was Ayesha. 12mo
julieclair I loved the makeover scene, but did wonder why Khalid agreed to it. I thought his appearance was part of his conservative religious principles. Didn't he feel like he was selling out? 12mo
Gissy I agree with you, I thought the same about Ayesha to be a better person than me in forgiving Hafsa so quickly. 😳
About Khalid, I also thought the same when he agreed to changed his image. But maybe in his interior he was following his mother wishes? This part was not necessarily well explained.

#Pemberlittens Ch. 39-40: Why did it take so long to tell Ayesha about her father? Secret‘s just breed mistrust. And I feel as though in this case it destroyed Ayesha‘s relationship with her mother. And man, Tarek is so angry. Do you think he really gave the money back?

BarkingMadRead I‘m not so sure about that money, he hasn‘t exactly proved to be trustworthy at all 12mo
vonnie862 That was some major grudge Tarek held for years. I am not sure about the money but it would be nice to see some redeeming factors. However, I did love that Tarek put Farzana in her place. 12mo
See All 6 Comments
Ruthiella I think Tarek did give the money back. But I also think the author didn‘t make Tarek believable in terms of his motivation. He is alternately too slick and too pathetic. I also think the whole reveal with Ayesha‘s dad is too much plot for this narrative. She should have not included it. Just one sentence at the start would suffice to show how Ayesha is wary of falling too hard b/c of her mom‘s experience. 12mo
peanutnine @Ruthiella I agree, the bit about her father wasn't really necessary and the mystery of it didn't add anything to the story except more confusion 12mo
Gissy Tarea put Farzana in her place but she has no instrospection , she was still looking for a wife🙄About family secrets, well those things happen that the juice for family dramas, in novels and real life😳😂

#Pemberlittens Ch. 37-38- a lot of juicy secrets are being revealed and thank God for it. I‘m so glad we finally learn Zareena‘s story - and it‘s great that she‘s happy with her husband - it‘ll be interesting to see her confront her mother. And I really hope Khalid confronts Sheila.

BarkingMadRead I didn‘t see that coming with Zareena, I was expecting something juicier lol but I‘m glad for Khalid that it worked out this way! 12mo

#Pemberlittens 35-36: I almost wish they had done a flashback scene for what happened to Zareena. While I appreciate the letter - in true P&P spirit - I need to know more of what happened! And why did she wait 12 years to leave? Was she trying to squirrel away money for all that time? Is she on her way to meet Tarek for a share in the absconded funds?

BarkingMadRead This Zareena thing is driving me nuts! My mind is going in so many different directions 🤣 12mo

Chapter 33. Ayesha opts for a depressing, existential Shakespeare quote at the mosque's youth summit. 🤦 Khalid chases her to her car and congratulates her on her fortunate engagement to him, the rich guy who will help her be more religious and quit her job to write amateur poems. Mehso-so

Meh, I think P&P retellings just don‘t work for me. They can‘t compare to the original, and at least this one was only ok on its own. It felt like too many threads all at once - lots of family drama on all sides, the romances with its ups and downs and knots, workplace discrimination, a makeover, career questions, friend drama, a villain getting comeuppance - it was a lot to tie together. #PemberLittens

#Pemberlittens Ch.27-28: Khalid is getting more bold and giving in to his anger with Farzana - good - if there‘s a woman who needs to be knocked down a peg-it‘s that one. And I say that with feminist love. I am concerned about Zareena. I wonder if she ran away. And what did Tarek have to do with her disappearance back in the day? My gut says he got her pregnant. Any other theories?

#Pemberlittens Ch. 21: Ick, all I feel is dread for when this whole farce becomes exposed. And really, Farzana and Hafsa are pretty mean to pull this on their family. Hafsa is so spoiled she can‘t stand for one of her rishtas to go to her cousin? Really?

vonnie862 @Ruthiella I'm with you. I don't like any of those two. What saddens me the most was how easily Hafsa wanted to betray her cousin who has always been there for her. And she shouldn't be mad at Ayesha when Hafsa hasn't done anything for the conference. 12mo

Um, I‘m not Muslim and don‘t follow halal restrictions, but I am 99% certain that Twinkies (really, Hostess products at all) are not halal. Hostess uses tallow/animal fat in their cream fillings, and while it‘s from cows or sheep it‘s not prepared according to any religious rules. Other products (cupcakes, for one) also contain gelatin from pork. (I say this as a vegetarian, by the way)

ravenlee @IndoorDame I mean, desperate times and all that - but I‘ve had to make do with convenience store food in a pinch before and can do way better than a slushie and a twinkie. 12mo
StayCurious Yeah this was a bit strange - but I do love slushies 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly Weird! I can see it being an intro to an interesting conversation but they don‘t even talk about it?! 12mo
dylanisreading Twinkies and slushies are delicious. (This coming from someone who can't eat them anymore.) 12mo
thebacklistbook From what I understand not all Muslims follow halaal eating and it is much like kosher in the sense that products have to be approved by an Imam (faithleader) and are certified to follow the necessary restrictions. 12mo
thebacklistbook Pardon me *halal* based on what I can find online if the fat source is veggie oil then a Twinkie could technically be considered halal by such a body. 12mo
ravenlee @thebacklistbook sure, halal is a personal choice - but in this book it‘s been made *very* clear that both characters follow halal, especially the male MC who bought the twinkies. And the fat source is animal. It‘s just really inconsistent with the characters so far represented. 12mo
StayCurious @ravenlee agree it was out of character for sure. Interesting point! 12mo

#Pemberlittens sorry for late post - Easter celebrations ran a bit late - 17: Ayesha and Khalid are totally catching feelings! And Nani is a shrewd lady - she knows exactly what‘s going on. Too bad Ayesha and Khalid are still a bit confused .

18: oof - Tarek is a wolf - he sees Khalid as competition and is determined to crush him. I‘m so worried about how things will play out for everyone, and for the mosque.

vonnie862 Glad you took time to be with loved ones! 12mo
IndoorDame Hope Easter celebrations were fun! Grandma is SO cool! 12mo

vonnie862 I really liked that Ayesha and Khalid got together to learn how to cook. To me, cooking is very intimate. It brings out parts of people that are usually hidden. The way the grandma reacted was super cute too. I totally see my grandma doing the same thing. 12mo
vonnie862 And I agree...Tarek is terrible! He's really not winning points with Ayesha by being a jerk. 12mo
Ruthiella I loved Nani and how she is so clearly aware that these two belong together, even if they can‘t see it just yet. Also, I really like that Nani wanted to be a detective…because she clearly has the skills ! 🕵️‍♀️ (edited) 12mo
Bluebird @Ruthiella agree completely. I laughed when Nani first mentioned she had wanted to be a detective….but not by the end of the chapter. Sleuthing is in her DNA. 12mo
BarkingMadRead Ok, those pics are on point! Nani sees what‘s up even if the two of them don‘t. I‘m wondering if Tarek was responsible for Z‘s hasty departure 12mo

My copy is due back to Libby and can‘t be renewed so I decided to just binge the second half of this. I‘ll keep silently checking it on the #Pemberlittens discussions this month to see what everyone else is thinking. I got really into this adaptation! While there were a LOT of things I found infuriating, and found myself wanting to argue with the book pretty frequently, my overall sense of the story is that it was heartwarming and captivating.

#Pemberlittens 15. Khalid has gotten good at apologies. But will Ayesha be as good when she has to apologize for pretending to be Hafsa? Things are getting complicated.
16. Rishtas seem complicated - everyone acting and playing a part. I think Khalid is having second thoughts about giving complete control to his mother. Even though she seems used to that.

IndoorDame I‘m feeling super annoyed that it‘s only just occurring to Khalid that he might be set up with a girl who is opposed to arranged marriages (or maybe it‘s only just occurred to him that this may be problematic?) since we heard from him in like chapter 1 that he knew some women were against it since his sister was! 12mo
Ruthiella I definitely think Khalid is starting to chafe at his mother‘s methods of control. I‘m waiting for his epiphany. 12mo
See All 10 Comments
vonnie862 I kind of feel for Khalid. He was so sheltered and controlled by his mother that he did not pay attention to what he really wanted. Now that he is getting to know "Hafsa", he's realizing that there's more to life than what he thought. I'm curious about his dad too. It didn't appear that the dad had much in the say on the matter of Khalid's sister being married off in India. 12mo
julieclair I agree. Ayesha/Hafsa is opening his eyes. It's interesting to watch him change and grow. I do wonder how Ayesha will explain to him why she lied to him about her identity for so long. 12mo
Bluebird @julieclair that explanation is going to be difficult…there is no good excuse for her deceit. I find it interesting that both of them have a mystery surrounding their fathers. I am looking forward to learning the answers. Perhaps learning the truth will help Ayesha and Khalid grow closer to each other 12mo
julieclair @Bluebird I like your idea about learning the truth bringing them closer. Hoping that‘s what happens. 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly Khalid has been very clear that he‘s totally fine with letting his mom pick his wife (in theory) so I don‘t see why Farzana can‘t just tell him they‘re going on a rishta visit! And then she gets mad that he‘s not comfortable talking to the girl? 🙄 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly I find it a little too convenient that Khalid tells Clara he “ran into her friend from Bella‘s” instead of “her friend Hafsa”… how long is this stupid charade going to continue?! 12mo
BarkingMadRead Yikes that first rishta was a nightmare, these girls are awful! 12mo

#Pemberlittens Ch.13: a life coach for wrestlers? How…interesting. Poor Ayesha‘s prospects aren‘t great.
Ch.14: ok her cousin is kind of the worst. I wouldn‘t cover for her anymore - I‘d tell her parents the truth. But that‘s just me.

Ruthiella I‘m not happy with that turn Hafsa has taken. Where did this come from? 12mo
LitStephanie Oh the life coach whose mom says he would have been a great pro wrestler if he wanted, LOL! No wonder he used one of the most generic words in business, "consulting." I love how Ayesha and Idris are laughing like crazy and Mom gets all huffy. 12mo
See All 10 Comments
IndoorDame I wouldn‘t be covering for Hafsa either! I don‘t think Lizzie is quite so sympathetic to Lydia for most of P&P either…And a life coach for wrestlers, funny for us, but I‘m surprised Ayesha takes it so well! I‘m not sure I‘d find it funny in her shoes… 12mo
vonnie862 I wonder how Khalid is going to react when he learns that Ayesha has been pretending to be Hafsa this whole time. I don't think he's going to take it well. And the real Hafsa...aye... 12mo
ravenlee Ugh, Hafsa. What a waste of space. I‘ve been trying to decide if Hafsa or Zareena is Lydia - maybe both. 12mo
julieclair I hate to see Hafsa using Ayesha like this. So selfish. 12mo
peanutnine @ravenlee Hafsa is the worst! Definitely a Lydia character. I think Zareena is Georgiana if Darcy hadn't saved her from Whickam 12mo
ravenlee @peanutnine oh, good call! I didn‘t even consider Georgiana, partly because Zareena is the older sister. 12mo

Ch 14. Jalaluddin shows us the flip side of having a traditional extended family when Ayesha confronts Hafsa. It is wonderful that Hafsa's dad gave Ayesha's mom a house and gives his children everything they could want, but now we've got a 27 year old woman covering for her irresponsible teen cousin and afraid to stop because her generous aunt and uncle might not see her as saintly anymore if they find out. And Hafsa is an entitled little sh!t.

Chapter 13. Why not? How about because it is hard to imagine a more uncomfortable feeling than heart-pounding, electric (sexual, let's call it what it is) attraction at first sight while your mom and teenage brother eagerly watch? I guess that is sort of what happened with Jane and her nosy mom when Bingley first met her, but then they danced together away from prying, immediate vicinity supervision. #pemberlittens

#Pemberlittens Ch.11: ooh Sheila is the worst! I‘m glad the lingerie ladies are giving Khalid a chance. Maybe he‘ll wind up being good at this job (although it‘s difficult to see how at this point). I wonder how much of a say Khalid‘s father had when it came to sending his daughter away. It seems to me Farzana ruled the roost. 👇

StayCurious Ch.12: aw, no more smiles? Come on Khalid, you need to lighten up a bit. No smiles is no way to live. Also, Tarek is an ass - no female speakers? And he doesn‘t care about helping the mosque. Not really. 😑 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly Wickham—I mean Tarek—is a scammer. Calling it now: there‘s no conference, he‘s just making the mosque desperate so they‘ll pay his administrative fee. Come on, no website?! And the sudden urgency is a classic sign of a scam. 12mo
See All 14 Comments
Clare-Dragonfly Also, Sheila is the absolute worst in an almost cartoonish way, and the lingerie ladies are making a dumb business decision but I bet it will turn out well for them and for Khalid. 12mo
IndoorDame Love the lingerie ladies! Maybe Khalid does have a shot at surviving Sheila‘s scheming (though he still seems annoyingly clueless as to how much trouble he‘s in whereas all the women at work take only seconds to recognize what‘s happening). 12mo
StayCurious @Clare-Dragonfly ooh I bet you‘re right! 12mo
IndoorDame @Clare-Dragonfly I thought so too, but I hope we‘re wrong! Scamming a mosque that‘s in debt is just evil 12mo
vonnie862 I'm with you ladies. Sheila is horrible! Is she supposed to represent a P&P character? Or is she just the author's way to bring awareness to what Muslims go through? Either way, she makes my blood boil! 12mo
IndoorDame @vonnie862 I‘ve been wondering that too… I assume Lady C will be one of the aunties. Prob Khalid‘s mom. So I‘m guessing she‘s not analogous to anyone. (Though personally I think the author would do an even better job at raising awareness by painting a more nuanced character as discriminatory. I haven‘t met many people irl who are so completely detestable and one note…) 12mo
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly I think your hypothesis about Tarek‘s intentions are spot on. 12mo
LitStephanie @Clare-Dragonfly agree the lingerie company ladies are making a dumb decision. I am sure it will turn out all right, but no, in real life, you don't hire the behind the scenes tech engineer to handle the website design of your brand. 12mo
julieclair What an intriguing thought, @Clare-Dragonfly ! I hate to think you‘re right, but I have a feeling you are. And the lingerie ladies… what a hoot! I love how they seem to have taken Khalid on as a project, lol. I bet he rises to the occasion and does a great job for them. 12mo
ravenlee @Clare-Dragonfly I got that vibe, too - especially when the sudden date change followed on the heels of Ayesha calling him out for not publicizing the event at the previous meeting. And he can‘t answer basic questions about his organization and its goals. 12mo
Bluebird I love the lingerie ladies! They see Sheila for who she is! I love that they told her to hit the road and they would communicate directly with the CEO. I guess they‘ve been disrespected so much that they want to help Khalid out. They know they‘ll get a good product in the end. Khalid‘s honest enough to express his shortcomings. He‘ll get help on the project if he needs it. 12mo

Chapters 11-12. So Tarek straight up tells the small mosque that they are bumping their already scheduled conference because a bigger fish came along. Anyone else started to think this guy is a little slimy and a bit too shiny? Also, Ayesha is an idiot to cover for Hafsa again! #pemberlittens

IndoorDame Yes! That line totally made me nervous that they were going to turn out to be one of those fake fronts that uses fundraisers as a scam to raise money for themselves claiming their operations costs exceed what was raised… really hoping my instincts are wrong here 🤞🏼😬 12mo
LitStephanie @IndoorDame oh yeah, that could totally be it. That Imam seems clueless about technology so probably hasn't even checked their credentials and reputation. 12mo

LitStephanie @IndoorDame oh that was great. 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly @IndoorDame I am 💯 with you, unfortunately! Ayesha is smart, maybe she‘ll work it out? 12mo
julieclair That Imam is so endearing! I do hope the mosque is saved from bankruptcy. But like y‘all, I fear that Tarek is a bit too slimy. I don‘t trust him. And Ayesha covering for Hafsa… what is she thinking? Bad, bad decision. 12mo
StayCurious I‘m so worried about how this will all turn out! 12mo
Bluebird Totally agree! Tarek is very shady. I‘m hoping Ayesha and Khalid can save the day. And why is the mosque in such danger of closing. I thought Hafsa‘s family was ultra rich and funding it. I‘m suspecting they are in financial trouble..overspending to look good for the neighbors and it‘s gone too far. 12mo
LitStephanie @Bluebird that is a good question. Although I think Hafsa's dad said something about reducing his support, but they should not have been so reliant on one family's funding anyway. 12mo
Bluebird @LitStephanie quite true. It does seem strange that the Imam is keeping the financial difficulties quiet. You‘d think they‘d be a bit more transparent and ask all members to donate as they are able. 12mo

#Pemberlittens Ch.9: ooh, is Tarek the villain of the piece? I sense our Wickham has come. Sigh Ayesha…or should I say Hafsa? I always hate when people pretend to be someone they‘re not - it never ends well. And really, should you lie in a mosque? To an Imam?
Ch.10: poor Ayesha - to be so easily dismissed by the aunties must have stung - no wonder she went off. I can‘t help thinking Hafsa is going to end up in a miserable marriage -just like Lydia

vonnie862 Ch. 9 Not sure what was Ayesha's purpose yo pretend to be her cousin. I don't think it will end well when the Imam finds out. 12mo
vonnie862 Ch. 10 I felt for Ayesha and Hafsa here. It also made me sad to see women also continuing the tradition of controlling women by saying the things they did. And like Atesha pointed out, there is a double standard. Why don't the men get evaluated as well? 12mo
See All 10 Comments
IndoorDame I also get the sense we‘ve met our Wickham! And I didn‘t think her questions to the aunties were so outrageous… Wouldn‘t a woman want to know something about a prospective husband if the marriage is going to succeed? 12mo
Ruthiella Definitely Tarek is the Wickham! I agree that Ayesha‘s identity switch will have consequences! Why would the prospective groom not show? Major suspicions BUT what if he‘s Bingly? The aunties could totally be stand ins for Caroline and Mrs.Hurst? 🤔 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly Ugh, I do not like the identity switch thing. Or Khalid having Ayesha‘s notebook… there was no specific drama when he handed it back but I have a feeling there will be some later. 12mo
julieclair I am loving all these speculation… so fun! I am thinking Tarek is Wickham and Hafsa is Lydia. But as for Ayesha, agreeing to the switch just does not seem like her, from what we‘ve learned of her character so far. There can only be trouble ahead… 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella Did you notice the names of the groom‘s mother and friend? I think we‘ve already met him… 12mo
Bluebird I also think Tarek is Wickham, Hafsa is Lydia. Ayesha certainly has blinders on when it comes to Hafsa. Thinks she‘s ‘fun loving‘. I see her as childish and irresponsible. A big mistake that Ayesha is pretending to be her. It will not go well. 12mo
BarkingMadRead Ugh what was Ayesha thinking?!? This switch with Hafsa can never end well, I‘m betting Hafsa will bail on the next meeting as well! 12mo

#Pemberlittens Ch.7: Poor Khalid - he doesn‘t fully get the hornet‘s nest he‘s stepped on with Sheila. And poor Clara being stuck in the middle. I‘m wondering how this will play out.

Ch.8: I‘m trying to be understanding of Khalid‘s parents and their religious and cultural views - but I‘m not liking the idea that they married his sister off as some sort of way to rein her in.

IndoorDame And he supports them! He knows how unhappy she is, but doesn‘t encourage her to change her life, just sends extra cash. The only way he can imagine things differently is if he‘d tattled on her when they were young so the parents could have been more controlling when she was in Canada. Personally I see a world of grey area between Sheila‘s bigotry and blindly supporting his family‘s take on religion/culture. I‘m definitely in the middle somewhere. 12mo
vonnie862 That's a sad side of the culture: arrange marriages to control women. I try to be understanding and be respectful, but this practice always makes me upset. I feel bad for Khalid's sister. 12mo
See All 12 Comments
Ruthiella Let‘s see how this pans out. I like how this is very different from P&P. We‘ll have to find out what revelations Khalid has about his preconceived ideas. 12mo
LitStephanie Clara's situation makes my stomach hurt! So stressful! You know, what if Khalid's sister ran off with some guy while they were visiting India? Like a Lydia character? And then she either married him in a fit of rebellion or her mom made her marry him? 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly I loved Khalid‘s comeback about the dress! Though I can‘t imagine it will actually help his case with Sheila. @Ruthiella I agree, I‘m hoping to see some interesting character development. @LitStephanie I like the way you‘re thinking! Or since he‘s Darcy, she‘s Georgiana and ran off with Wickham, but since he wasn‘t there to rescue her she was forced to marry him. 12mo
ravenlee The whole thing with the sister reminds me of the “good old days” when the unmarried girl would suddenly disappear, and either show up a year later or never again and nobody asked any questions - because the parents sent her away to have a baby somewhere else. 12mo
julieclair I feel sorry for Khalid, being targeted because of his clothing, which does conform to the company dress code of looking professional. It‘s not like he‘s wearing beat up jeans and a ratty t-shirt. And I also feel sorry for Clara. What stress! 12mo
StayCurious @LitStephanie you could absolutely be right! 12mo
Bluebird @LitStephanie interesting idea! I like this better than my idea; I thought she got pregnant and thy sent her to India and ‘bought‘ her a husband to save face. @Ruthiella i agree! At first I wasn‘t seeing the comparison to P&P, but now I‘m enjoying this author‘s version. 12mo
LitStephanie @Bluebird I am a little concerned about that possibility, too. 12mo

#Pemberlittens Ch.5. Ah, to be the sensible one in the family - when really Ayesha wants to run free and live through her poems. Hafsa seems a bit silly and spoiled. How is Ayesha supposed to rein her in?

Ch.6. Ayesha schools Khalid in poetic fashion - but I wonder if he realizes she heard his comments. I‘m so curious about the secret of her father‘s death. Why doesn‘t anyone talk about it?

Ruthiella I also expect the mystery around Ayesha‘s dad to be uncovered in the story. Is he really dead? It does seem strange that in 10 years, she‘s not heard anything BUT I will say that in my family, I too have found out surprising things that were only hinted at when I was a child and too young to understand the full import of them. 13mo

peanutnine @LitStephanie ugh yes men are gross! And what is with Amir? I hope he's not supposed to be a Bingley character because he's slimy 13mo
vonnie862 @peanutnine My Thoughts exactly on Amir. I really hope he's not Mr. Bingley. 13mo
vonnie862 I too found Ayesha and Khalid's first meeting interesting. This chapter made me like Ayesha more. 13mo
LitStephanie @peanutnine oh same here! I think this might be more inspired by P&P than a retelling. We'll see! 12mo
ravenlee Amir is so gross. I hate that he‘s also got a point about how Khalid could lighten up somewhat - there has to be some middle ground between being “observant Muslim man” who so deliberately sets himself apart and “pseudo-Muslim party guy” who‘s so slimy. 12mo
julieclair I loved Ayesha‘s poetry slam at Khalid! He totally deserved it after jumping to conclusions about her. 12mo
Bluebird Ayesha‘s poem was great! I loved this take on the P&P dance scene where Darcy makes his infamous comment! (edited) 12mo

#Pemberlittens Ch3. Wow…Khalid‘s mother sure is old fashioned. And so is he. But I kind of like him. Nothing wrong with living the way you want. His boss sure doesn‘t agree. Yikes.

Ch.4. Reading Sheila‘s comments about Khalid made me squirm, and feel for both him and Clara. What a mess Clara‘s in! What would you do if you found yourself in that situation?

IndoorDame Listening to her was so cringey! I‘m curious if she‘s going to turn out to be anti Muslim or anti religious observance… 13mo
vonnie862 I felt for Khalid. He is trying to be a good Muslim but the people around him (ie his friend) are not as supportive. He is not being disrespectful or misogynist towards women. I understand Sheila but at the same time I a don't like her. I really hope she doesn't have him fired because of his religion. 13mo
See All 18 Comments
Ruthiella Shiela is clearly a terrible person and not fit to manage people in 21st century Canada. I‘m pretty sure that Clare should report her new boss to the higher ups, which is what I would do IRL, but I suspect for the sake of the plot, she will not. 13mo
peanutnine @Ruthiella 💯 agree. She seems horrible and super bigoted. I feel like Clara won't speak up though for fear of losing her own promotion or position entirely. I feel for Khalid and hate to see him suffer from prejudice due to his religion and beliefs but at the same time he is coming across as a very weak character which disappoints me. I hope he will speak up for himself and act more like a Darcy character 13mo
StayCurious @peanutnine yeah right now I don‘t see much of a Darcy in him 13mo
vonnie862 @peanutnine I'm with you. I don't see Khalid as Mr. Darcy. It will be interesting to see how he will interact with Ayesha. 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly Ugh! I would sympathize with Sheila if I thought she were trying to do the right thing, keeping someone who won‘t treat women and men the same out of a position of power, but she‘s obviously acting from prejudice instead of a desire for equality. Clara is my favorite character so far and I hope she finds a way to triumph for both herself and for the company‘s DEI. Not sure matchmaking is the way to go about it, though… 😅 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly @StayCurious I disagree! Khalid is awkward and uncomfortable in social situations just like Darcy. I bet when he is in a situation that fits the rules he‘s learned all his life, he‘s a charming host. 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m also really curious what the backstory is with Khalid and his sister—why they don‘t talk about her husband. At first I was mad at him for not telling her they moved, but it sounds like they have a pattern of not talking about the important things. 13mo
StayCurious @Clare-Dragonfly good point! 13mo
LitStephanie OMG that scene where Khalid tries to congratulate Clara on her promotion by saying "I know you will fulfill your duties with integrity." ??? I actually like him a little better for his awkwardness. 13mo
julieclair Khalid is socially awkward, but doesn't deserve to be fired. Sheila seems angry about life. I wonder what happened to her in Saudi Arabia to make her so prejudiced against Khalid? It feels personal. I will be very disappointed if Clara allows him to be fired for the sake of her own career. 12mo
ravenlee @Clare-Dragonfly @StayCurious I think we‘re thrown off by having Khalid‘s perspective on his own actions, because we never get to see Darcy through his own eyes and have to infer his reasoning. 12mo
ravenlee I‘m confused about the power structure and chain of command at the office - like who Clara can make a complaint to, is it someone on-site or someone at a different location (who doesn‘t deal with Sheila regularly or in person). Of course, we don‘t even see Clara considering anything like that yet. (Hopefully it‘s “yet.”) 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly @ravenlee Agreed! And since Clara is the regional manager of HR I would think she IS the person to report to… but then again, Sheila seems to outrank her? You‘re right, it is confusing. 12mo
Bluebird Sheila wins the award for worst boss ever! I agree with @ravenlee and @Clare-Dragonfly, Clara should have someone she can go to about this. Also—i don‘t see Darcy or Elizabeth in Khalid or Ayeesha. So far the homage to P&P seems a bit thin. 12mo
BarkingMadRead This was bizarre, isn‘t it Clara‘s job to advocate for Khalid, not fire him? She needs to stand up to the wicked witch! 12mo

#Pemberlittens Ch.1 : We meet Khalid who is interested and curious about the girl next door, but who realistically realizes that he will marry the girl of his mother‘s choosing. So far an interesting take on Darcy. Is his mother supposed to be Lady Catherine? 👇

StayCurious Ch.2: I‘m trying to be sympathetic to Ayesha. I don‘t know her full story yet. But part of me is like “Girl, it‘s hard AF to make money writing poetry. You need a realistic job! Be glad you found one. Even if the kids are little 💩”. 13mo
vonnie862 My Thoughts exactly on Khalid's mother. She most likely is Lady Catherine. Now, Ayesha...I think she got into the wrong job line if hiding in the bathroom is her immediate reaction. Being a teacher is not easy, especially going right in the middle of the school year. 13mo

vonnie862 However, I am highly enjoying a Muslim twist of P&P. I can't wait to read more! 13mo
IndoorDame Ayesha‘s gonna need to toughen up fast to survive being a HS sub! But since she knows her poetry sucks I hope she learns to like teaching 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m not enthusiastic about either character yet! I thought it was pretty mean of Khalid to laugh when he saw the travel mug break. 13mo
peanutnine I didn't make the Lady Catherine connection but that makes sense. I agree that I wish Ayesha was a stronger character, but with just one chapter so far I have hope that will change. A job as a poet does seem farfetched though. Even if she was successful, it's not very lucrative. Why was teaching her backup plan? 13mo
julieclair Picking up my library hold on Monday, and looking forward to jumping into the discussion then! 13mo
Bluebird I‘m also not sold on either Khalid or Ayesha. She must have her head in the clouds if she thought teaching as a high school sub was going to be an easy gig. Nevertheless, I am enjoying this version so far. 13mo
Ruthiella I‘ve only read the first chapter, but I like that we get Khalid‘s POV. 13mo
DanaManiac I think we‘re off to an interesting start, but I‘m also not sold on either of them just yet. Ayesha seems a bit naive based on her first day of work, but excited to see where this goes! 13mo
LitStephanie @Bluebird same here. I mean, really, she has worked in classrooms before. 13mo
LitStephanie I am trying really hard not to laugh at the meek guy living with his mom at 26. Sometimes I have to remind myself that many families get along well enough to want to live communally even with grown children. But I can't help thinking Khalid is one of those guys who will go straight from being taken care of by his mom to being taken care of by his wife. 13mo
julieclair I like that Ayesha is trying to be responsible and a role model as the oldest child in the family. She got her teaching degree, rather than pursue her dream to be a poet. I hope she learns to toughen up, as being a first year teacher is hard. But I also hope she finds a balance and can pursue her poetry too. 12mo
ravenlee I‘m also in the camp of not liking either character at the start. We don‘t get much to go on, but what we do get is…not promising. On the fence so far. 12mo
BarkingMadRead I feel like Ayesha is too meek to be Lizzy lol but I‘m hoping she comes out of her shell soon. I‘m looking forward to learning more about them both. Khalid is a total creeper 🤣 12mo
