The History of Love
The History of Love | Nicole Krauss
ONE OF THE MOST LOVED NOVELS OF THE DECADE. A long-lost book reappears, mysteriously connecting an old man searching for his son and a girl seeking a cure for her widowed mother's loneliness. Leo Gursky taps his radiator each evening to let his upstairs neighbor know hes still alive. But it wasnt always like this: in the Polish village of his youth, he fell in love and wrote a bookSixty years later and half a world away, fourteen-year-old Alma, who was named after a character in that book, undertakes an adventure to find her namesake and save her family. With virtuosic skill and soaring imaginative power, Nicole Krauss gradually draws these stories together toward a climax of "extraordinary depth and beauty" (Newsday).

"Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering"

This book was tragic, and lovely. It was historic holocaust, and Jewish modern. I laughed, and I cried so hard. This isn't an easy, throw-in-your-bag kind of read. This is a cabin in the woods, cottage by the sea kind of alone read.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a deep read.

?? Happy Reading! ??

#MayMovieMagic The History of Love is a story within a story that traces the #OriginsOfLove for the curmudgeon Leo Gursky (whom I affectionately call #TheJewishOve ) A book that requires time and care as the dual stories are sometimes confusing. I loved Leo, so it bumped up my love for this book but it‘s not going to appeal to all readers. Still a book worth trying if you‘re seeking an unconventional love story.

Karisa Oh! I had almost forgotten this book. I loved it too! Jewish Ove is perfect description for him. Starts slow but pulls you right in. Gorgeous passages. 6mo

This is the story of a book that was written, lost, and then found, and the lives of the people connected or affected by the book. I so desperately wanted to love it, and I can see the brilliance of the idea. Yet much of it seemed to pass me by, and I didn‘t really enjoy it. I think it might be a case of right book, wrong time - maybe I‘ll try again another time.

Much ♥️ and 🙏 to Trish for gifting this to me. I‘m sorry I didn‘t love it.

Buechersuechtling @Amiable @JennyM I perfectly feel you. I know that feeling so well. I tried Nicole Krauss‘s and Jonathan Safran Foer‘s books a few times. But what both of them have to say is obviously not for me. I can‘t find anything in their books and am always bewildered by all the praise they get for their work. 7mo
JennyM @Buechersuechtling @amiable I‘m always fascinated when a book that‘s so popular just isn‘t for you. The beauty of reading 📖📚 7mo
Buechersuechtling @JennyM @Amiable Most of the time I am thankful because after years of passionate reading I still can‘t push away that tiny first thought that comes up in those cases, saying: “Is there something wrong with you❓” – No, it‘s not but seemingly old habits die hard. 7mo
TrishB I didn‘t love either 😘 but you never know until you try! 7mo
Amiable @Buechersuechtling @JennyM I know what you mean about questioning yourself when you dislike the “popular” books. I‘d heard such great things about Jennifer Egan, so I read one of her novels —and hated it. It used to bother me to be so out of sync, but now I‘m comfortable with my own tastes. 7mo

I‘m really struggling to get into A History of Love - I know!!!! It‘s so loved but I feel I‘m missing something. So I‘m going to put it down for a day and have a change of pace. Hoping the tale of a murdering husband and wife team will do the trick!

This is a beautifull crafted layered story about a man named Leo Gurksy who fell in love as a child and then lost the love of his life through the war. He writes a book about his life. This book chronicles how that book touches three lives: Leo, a teenage girl named Alma, and Leo's friend Zvi. The Zvi parts weren't my favorite but I was living for the Leo chapters.

Despite the fact I want to rush through to see how this story ends, this is one of my #currentreads since January 12. With quotes like “I was as close as I‘d ever been to him. As far away” and “The truth is the thing I invented so I could live” this book is too devastatingly beautiful to rush through.

Even as slow as I‘m reading I get the gnawing sense I‘m going too fast.

HELP! Have you read this book? I loved Leo Gursky. And then the story changed. Now I‘m lost, don‘t understand the intersection, and not sure I like the other story as much as Mr Gursky‘s. I flipped ahead a bit to try to find him and can‘t. Should I stick with it?

DogEaredBooks I would vote to stick with it. It‘s one of those books where I think the ending is the best part. My book club cam down from “favorite book of all time” to “it was only ok”. 🤷‍♀️ hope that was a bit helpful! (edited) 10mo

With only a few days left in 2018 I thought I‘d look back over all the books I‘ve logged into my goodreads reading challenge and pick out my favorites. These 20 really stood out as being impactful for me this year. Pickpick

Between a "pick" and a "so-so" for me. Feeling generous, so I'll swing to pick. This complicated tale unfolds from the point of view of no fewer than four narrators: an elderly man, Leo; a teen girl, Alma; her prepubescent brother, Bird; and a third-person omniscient narrator. Each has a story arc that intertwines with the others in both expected and unexpected ways. The narrative pulls you along, as does the writing style, which is fairly good.

Aimeesue “And yet…” 11mo
Amiable @Aimeesue And yet ...every time I put it down, I was reluctant to pick it up again. Which tells me something about it. 11mo
Aimeesue @Amiable Postmodernism isnt for everyone, and I only like it on rare occasion. But I read this probably 15 years ago, and I still remember Leo Gursky. I loved all the nods to Jewish writers, too. (edited) 11mo

Snowed in today so I‘m shopping online for books I need from @TheKidUpstairs #NewYearWhoDis reading list. Here‘s all 14 books she loved in 2018 & it‘s a great list!

I teetered on giving this two stars. So I‘d take this as a 2.5 rounded up. I honestly don‘t know how I feel about this book and finished the last page and went “Huh?” The beginning of the book focusing on Leo the true author of a book called The History of Love” read a lot like A Man Called Ove so I had hope. Then the chapters where a young namesake, Alma, narrated I had a hard time following.

“Once upon a time there was a boy. He lived in a village that no longer exists, in a house that no longer exists, on the edge of a field that no longer exists.”

Leo Gursky, Zvi Litvinoff, Alma Singer... Theirs is a story that originates in a small Polish village and revolves around a little-known book, The History of Love. I wanted to love it, but mostly, I was bored and, by the end, unsatisfied.
