Tales of Mystery and Imagination
Tales of Mystery and Imagination | Edgar Allen Poe
Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

"The Half-Bottle of Amontillado" doesn't have quite the right ring to it, but I couldn't run to a whole cask! Anyway, a small glass of the amber nectar to enjoy along with Poe's devilish short story, perfectly illustrated by Arthur Rackham ?

Bookwomble Well, it's still a half-bottle more than poor Fortunato got to enjoy! 💀 4y

I don‘t know if 2 books is actually a #bookhaul
Regardless, this is the result of today‘s visit to the used book shop.

Lindy Welcome to Litsy. I‘m going to host a buddy read of The Tale of Genji starting on January 1st, one chapter per day. If you‘re interested in joining us, I will tag you in my posts. 😊 5y
Exbrarian @Lindy Yes, please. 5y

Lindy @Exbrarian Excellent! I look forward to you joining us. 5y
Exbrarian @lindy Is there a particular translation we‘re reading? Is there a # to follow? 5y
Kaye Welcome 🌸 5y
Lindy @Exbrarian The buddy read project started informally with comments on a post about a related book. I will do a formal invitation post tomorrow in case others want to join too. Any translation is fine, since it‘s interesting to compare differences. Page numbers aren‘t important because we are counting by chapters. I will start using #gardenofGenji - the original post was on 5y

A match made in Hades: the infernally mellifluous voice of Christopher Lee narrating the gothically sinister words of Edgar Allan Poe. Set horripilation to eleven! 🐱🦇🧟‍♀️☠

Pickpick

I must say that it surprised me that some stories were kind of a hard read. But, oh, Mr Poe‘s imagination! Nothing like it. Basically liked them all, but my heart still belongs to what was when I was about 9-10, my first ever creepy read: “The murders at the rue Morgue.” 💀📚

“In the consideration of the faculties and impulses - of the prima mobilia of the human soul, the phrenologists have failed to make room for a propensity which, although obviously existing as a radical, primitive, irreducible sentiment, has been equally overlooked by all the moralists who have preceded them. In the pure arrogance of the reason, we have all overlooked it...” #firstlines

So it‘s just past 4 am here and I can‘t sleep, so I decided to sort these books. There are about 30, and these three (Tales of mystery, A French Robinson Caruso, and A Tale of Two Cities) are the most recognizable and in the best condition. My great great grandmother carried the collection of them with her when they migrated from Belgium to Canada in about 1945. Most of the editions aren‘t dated, but the ones that are are 1910-1925. #oldbooks 🛳🗺

Andrea4 Wow! What a treasure! 6y
Kaye Such a nice keepsake ❤️ 6y
Jabberwocky @andrea4 @kaye Right?! My grandma is downsizing and is going through most of her stuff. My aunts and uncles have snapped up most of the ‘family history‘ stuff, but no one wanted these! I honestly could not believe my luck. (edited) 6y
