Sold on a Monday: A Novel | Kristina Mcmorris
2 children for sale The scrawled sign, peddling young siblings on a farmhouse porch, captures the desperation sweeping the country in 1931. It's an era of breadlines, bank runs, and impossible choices. For struggling reporter Ellis REed, the gut-wrenching scene evokes memories of his family's dark past. He snaps a photograph of the children, not meant for publication. But when the image leads to his big break, the consequences are devastating in ways he never imagined. Haunted by secrets of her own, secretary Lillian Palmer sees more in the picture than a good story and is soon drawn into the fray. Together, the two set out to right a wrongdoing and mend a fractured family, at the risk of everything they value. Inspired by an actual newspaper photo that stunned readers across the nation, this touching novel explores the tale within the frame and behind the lens — a journey of ambition, love and the far-reaching effects of our actions.

Set in the Depression Era, Ellis Reed, a journalist, got a big break in his career when his story with a picture of a sign that read '2 Children for Sale' was published. Sympathy & help came pouring in to help the children in the picture. All was good until the story took an ugly turn.

A quick, yet thought-provoking read! A great cure for a reading slump, especially if you enjoy #historicalfiction!

I had to rush through this one because I got it yesterday to read before book club tonight. Fortunately I hit my deadline, despite a huge and sudden work project.
This was a great book. Although it surprised me to see so much of the reporters‘ lives, I loved following their story and seeing the changes that came into their lives as well as the lives of the children.

I read this book for my Book Club. I found the story just ok. It wasn't bad but it just didn't pull me in like I thought it would. It got mixed reviews from my book club members also.

I picked this up on a whim at the Festival of Books. Just before reading it though I saw some reviews saying it was too slow so I went into with unfairly low expectations. I have to say I did not find it slow at all & really enjoyed it. Part one seemed like it deviated from the expected story but it does come back. There are a lot of twists and turns (arguably too many?) but I thought it was a thought-provoking, quick, entertaining read.

An interesting historical fiction. A journalist takes a picture which he posed and then deals with the aftermath. The personal parts about the journalists were less interesting to me then the look at how much one picture could change the lives of people.

Sold on a Monday is a story that is inspired by an a actual photograph that was taken in August of 1948 advertising the sale of four young children seated on the porch of their Chicago home. Transported back to the unimaginably hard times of the Great Depression, the author does a great job in bringing the time period to life evoking the devastation and palpable desperation resulting from lost opportunity and broken dreams of that time.

I‘ll admit, it took a while for me to fall into this one. It wasn‘t until almost halfway through that I felt totally invested in the story line. Once I was, though, man what a ride! A heartfelt, intense roller coaster. Set in the era of the Great Depression, this book followed the story of several interwoven characters working in the news industry and the impact one single choice can have on the lives of so many ❤️

Imagine your life being changed by a small sign. In 1931, in rural Pennsylvania a reporter with a camera was drawn to a hand made sign which was advertising an unimaginable offer... 2 children for sale. The photo led to seemingly never ending consequences for all involved. This moving story was about choices and regrets, right vs. wrong, despair and hope, consequences and second chances.

A powerful, raw, heartbreaking read. One of the best books I have read this year. Get your tissues ready as you read this based on a real picture story from Kristina McMorris.

Sold On A Monday is a perfect historical fiction read on a subject matter from the Depression that is not very wide known to our generation. This novel will make you think about how good of a life you truly have.

The fabulous Kristina McMorris delivers a poignant, moving story inspired by a photo published in 1948. How desperate would a mother have to be to offer her children up for sale? In 1931, during the Great Depression, it may have been a matter of simply needing to eat. Sold on a Monday explores the far-reaching, unintended consequences of such a photo being published in the newspaper.⭐⭐⭐⭐

4☆McMorris‘s writing is so vivid + authentic it had me stepping back in time to 1931.
Photographer/journalist Ellis + secretary Lily work for a newspaper aspiring to be nameworthy reporters. After making a life-altering mistake they find themselves immersed in a personal mission to right a snapshot gone very wrong. SOAM is a testament to what people can do in desperation + the compassion behind steps taken for redemption. Compelling + captivating!

Samplergal I liked it. It was a little too saccharine at the end, but it was a good book. 10mo
tammysue @Samplergal Happy you liked it too! I went in with reservations on this one so it really surprised me how much I enjoyed. Another of her books was recommended, The Edge of Lost. It sounds pretty good. 10mo

Oh my god was this a heartbreaking story! So many unforeseen consequences stemming from one photo. I‘ve loved a number of Kristina McMorris novels and this was wonderful. Even with all the hurt and sadness it did end with some hope for the future. She included a great author note at the end that included the real historic photo that led her to write this story, which I always appreciate. Highly recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2!

Never underestimate the power of a photo…

A sign in a yard – 2 children for sale – caught the attention of struggling reporter Ellis Reed. It‘s the Great Depression and people take desperate measures to survive. Ellis snapped an innocent enough photo of the sign and the children, never intending that the photo be published.

Inspired by a photo in a 1948 Indiana newspaper. Four children huddled together by a sign that read 4 CHILDREN FOR SALE.
