Sold on a Monday
Sold on a Monday: A Novel | Kristina Mcmorris
2 children for sale The scrawled sign, peddling young siblings on a farmhouse porch, captures the desperation sweeping the country in 1931. It's an era of breadlines, bank runs, and impossible choices. For struggling reporter Ellis REed, the gut-wrenching scene evokes memories of his family's dark past. He snaps a photograph of the children, not meant for publication. But when the image leads to his big break, the consequences are devastating in ways he never imagined. Haunted by secrets of her own, secretary Lillian Palmer sees more in the picture than a good story and is soon drawn into the fray. Together, the two set out to right a wrongdoing and mend a fractured family, at the risk of everything they value. Inspired by an actual newspaper photo that stunned readers across the nation, this touching novel explores the tale within the frame and behind the lens a journey of ambition, love and the far-reaching effects of our actions.

A so-so rating. Not great, just okay. I was invested in the part of the tale that was a mother selling her children in the Depression Era. I think the story started out well and ended up just okay. It was bogged down by too many twists and sideplots until it was a little bit about a bunch of things rather than a tale I could get lost in. It sort of felt like a YA book to me and the title and cover felt misleading 🤷🏻‍♀️

It aggravates me when I end up in the book minority. This just isn‘t for me.

You think by the cover that it would be about the children but it‘s not the focus. The book is about Ellis‘s struggle to make it as a big time newspaper reporter and Lily‘s mom guilt.

It got a third of the way in and decided to DNF.

Kristina McMorris is one of my favorite authors and this book didn‘t disappoint! I have the physical book, but I listened to the audiobook which was well-done. This premise of this story is so sad, but the fact that people tried to help the families in this situation is encouraging. Inspired by this real photo, the author wrote a story of desperate measures involving the lives of children in 1931. Themes include the role of women in the workplace, integrity in journalism, adoption and single motherhood. Book Club pick. Fast paced.

I started this book earlier and then put it aside to read some cheerier books. Good move because I came back with better timing and liked the book. Although what happens to the kids here is all kinds of sad, it is juxtaposed against adults who just get that sense they cannot give up on a child.

I went into this believing this was a great depression story about how families had to sell their children. No, this is a story of a reporter who staged a photo after his original was ruined of children who were for sale. Leading to his backlash from the community. Not at all what I gathered from the synapse. Disappointed in this ... may be a DNF as this is not something of my interest. Nicely written however.

I wanted to branch out and read something different than my typical go-to of a thriller and I‘m glad I picked Sold on a Monday!

Ellis Reed is a reporter who happens to stumble upon two children sitting beside a sign that reads “2 Children for Sale” and after snapping a photograph, Reed never could have imagined how badly this situation would spiral out of control.

Set during the Depression in America, this truly captured the people of its time!

I like the idea of this book. BUT I got so bogged down in the middle. It was longer than necessary with silly coincidences and weird tie-ins. It could have been shorter and it would have been better. The last 100 pages were so long and I got bored. I would send this back to a redo.

This is still a pick but somewhat disappointing for me. I met the author about 2 yrs ago, so I‘m using this for #readwithmrbook (has been on tbr forever). I liked the 2 MCs & the alternating perspectives because each one moved the story along. I think I didn‘t love the plot though—maybe because it‘s set in the Great Depression, not my favorite era. This was one of our book club picks. Let's just say, I was not a fan. A lot happened in this book that wasn't feasible. Distances traveled by the speed of light. Basically, this photographer is stranded on the side of the road and sees these two boys sitting by a sign, For Sale. His photo takes off and lands this reporter/photographer in a boat load of trouble. Except, all the trouble resolves itself neatly, too neatly for my pessimistic tastes 😜

This cover is so heartbreaking and the story is bananas but sadly inspired by a true story. A photographer for a newspaper takes a photo of 2 kids in a house with a sign in front that says 2 children for sale. The book follows what happens to the photographer, a fellow employee, and the kids. It alternates POV and is done expertly. I continued to #justonemorechapter this book till poof! It was over. I was hooked from the start. Great pacing. 4⭐️

Set in the Depression Era, Ellis Reed, a journalist, got a big break in his career when his story with a picture of a sign that read '2 Children for Sale' was published. Sympathy & help came pouring in to help the children in the picture. All was good until the story took an ugly turn.

I picked this up on a whim at the Festival of Books. Just before reading it though I saw some reviews saying it was too slow so I went into with unfairly low expectations. I have to say I did not find it slow at all & really enjoyed it. Part one seemed like it deviated from the expected story but it does come back. There are a lot of twists and turns (arguably too many?) but I thought it was a thought-provoking, quick, entertaining read.
