Its been five years since Livy and her family have visited Livys grandmother in Australia. Now that shes back, Livy has the feeling shes forgotten something really, really important about Grans house. It turns out shes right. Bob, a short, greenish creature dressed in a chicken suit, didnt forget Livy, or her promise. Hes been waiting five years for her to come back, hiding in a closet like she told him to. He cant remember whoor whathe is, where he came from, or if he even has a family. But five years ago Livy promised she would help him find his way back home. Now its time to keep that promise. Clue by clue, Livy and Bob will unravel the mystery of where Bob comes from, and discover the kind of magic that lasts forever. Wendy Mass and Rebecca Stead, two masterminds of classic, middle-grade fiction come together to craft this magical story about the enduring power of friendship.

Just as charming as I hoped it would be. Definitely tugged on the heartstrings a few times. Was pleasantly surprised to see the story morph from unconventional zombie tale to Demeter and Persephone vibes.

As I mentioned in another post, my 10 year old LOVED this book and insisted that I read it. I'm glad I did, not only do I get to share this with my daughter but it was such a lovely read. I read picture books all the time with my 6 year old, but I realized I need to read children's chapter books now and then. It makes me feel like a kid again, and they're rather magical.

My 10 year old got this book at her school's book fair on Thursday evening and already finished it. She's been talking about it nonstop. Then she handed it to me and said I just HAVE to read it. So I will 😁 I love her enthusiasm.

A beautiful story about a friendship lasting even when you think you have forgotten all about them. Olivia (Livy) has gone back to Australia to visit her grandma after 5 years of being gone, she has forgotten everything. Bob remembers Livy so why didn‘t she remember him. They embark on a Touching journey to find out who Bob is and where he comes from. This one has such a bittersweet ending!

Bob is a SSYRA book that falls in the Modern Fantasy genre. It is about a little girl and a frog named Bob who work together with magic and friendship to discover where Bob is from. This book would be a great Independent Reading opportunity. Combined with a literature circle, this would encourage the EL strategy #2 to promote cooperation in small groups.

#ucflae3414su19

MeaganM This website provides an overview of reaching ELLs in literature circles along with materials, roles and tips. UDL 6.3 would be a guideline to facilitate managing information and resources since the literature circle would be mostly student led. 5y
alexialovesmith This is an awesome book to use as a LC especially because it‘s an SSYRA! I know at a lot of school kids who read SSYRA book‘s receive book charms. This practice will help encourage your students to read more! 5y
Summerm This book seems very exciting to read. The UDL strategies also seems like it would be great for this book. 5y
DrSpalding You found some excellent resources! Lovely image and this post shows that the sunshine State young reader award program is in place in our local schools. The books on this list would be books I would add to my TBR pile knowing that students will be reading them this year. 5y
gabbymartin I love the cover of the book and the theme! It seems like something that would definitely motivate the text to be read and I would love doing this in a literature circle. I love that this is a Sunshine State book too, I need to look more into those books!!! 5y

3.5 🌟 Bob was a really sweet story that was really hard to get into. Bob has been hiding in the closet of a house in Australia for 5 years. Livy is a US girl who is visiting her grandmother in Australia. The last time she was there was five years ago. The ending is what makes this book so sweet. It about finding where you belong, and holding on to those you deem important.

Question 9 #mgbuddyread

Peddler410 I‘m still working through the book; I‘ve had a hard time connecting. That said, this 2nd attempt has been better. (edited) 5y
mrp27 I thought this was a sweet and cute story about friendship and childhood but overall it didn't hit any high notes for me. I was expecting a little bit more. 5y
LibrarianRyan Sorry i am late on these. For what ever reason they never showed up on my timeline. Thank Goodness I went looking. 5y

JaclynW @Lmstraubie @mrp27 I agree with you both. It was okay, sweet but just didn't do much for me in the end. I can't quite put finger on what it was. Maybe just the "imaginary friend" aspect, the magic?? I usually love stories with magic. 5y

Question 8 #mgbuddyread

Peddler410 Oh my gosh! I don‘t think I can adequately put into words why I read middle grade. I think the authors do a great job identifying the world of the intended audience. Experiencing new mg with my own middle grader has reinforced the impact these books/authors have on helping kids navigate their world. 5y
sblbooks I started listening to them at work because they were shorter and easier to follow while working. 5y
mrp27 Good question and I don't know for sure. I've been a life long reader so it's not liked I missed out on mg reads, I read plenty when I was that age. But I do feel mg author's today write with more variety and a wider scope than they once did. I can now actually see myself represented in mg books where as before I couldn't. I don't think I'll ever stop reading mg books! 5y
See All 9 Comments
LibrarianRyan I love MG for the way it effects its readers. It's easy to find adult books that effect adults. But to speak to that age, in a way they will always remember. Plus I like that even the scary stories, the sad stories, etc, are still hopeful, still full of the joy of life, and not just the jade of adulthood. 5y
JaclynW @Peddler410 @sblbooks @mrp27 @LibrarianRyan @Lmstraubie I love all your answers! I too love the expansion of this genre since i was reading it. I love the representation of so many different kids and places. It's so important for kids reading, to know that they are represented, seen, heard, etc. in our world. They can also find comfort in knowing they aren't alone. I read from a variety of genres because I love ALL good books. I also like to ⬇️ 5y
JaclynW Read what my kids are reading. Several books we've read here, I recommend to my kids. I also recommend them to our elementary school librarian and the teachers that I know. I like to chat with people about good books! The librarian at my kids school has ordered books for the library based on my recommendations. 5y
Lmstraubie @JaclynW Love that you share your love of books and reading and that it is so well received!! 5y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie We have awesome librarians! We are lucky. I'm always chatting books with them. They give me many great recommendations too. Our favorite elementary school librarian retired last year and things just haven't been the same. 😢😭 5y

Question 7 #mgbuddyread

LibrarianRyan What caused Livy's mom to move to America? If the community is so used to Danny going missing, why don't they make him take a phone, or a locator beacon. 5y
Lmstraubie @LibrarianRyan And I wondered about the dad - why he didn't come & there didn't seem to be much communication with him. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Lmstraubie yeah! That‘s a really good question. 5y

JaclynW @LibrarianRyan @Lmstraubie I wondered the same things! The dad was oddly missing, I wondered if there was marriage troubles. America is far from Australia, I assumed it was love that took her there. I also wish we could have had more insight into Bob's family. I was intrigued. 5y

Question 6 #mgbuddyread

Peddler410 I do not recall having an imaginary friend. Not long ago, my daughter asked about imaginary friends. She wanted to know why she doesn‘t have one 😔 5y
sblbooks I was told I had one when I was three or four but I don't remember it. My family likes to pick at me about it though 😏 5y
mrp27 I never did. 5y
See All 11 Comments
LibrarianRyan I never had one that I know of. I had imaginary monsters. Does that count. At one point in time some family members thought I could see ghosts. Does that count? Mostly it was an over active imagination. But to this day, I swear my uncle Jean was sitting at the foot of my bed telling me everything was going to be okay when I was staying with my grandmother. 5y
Lmstraubie @LibrarianRyan @cwarnier @mrp27 @Chelsibno @sblbooks @Peddler410 I did. I am an only child and spent a lot of time alone or around adults when I was little. It gave me someone to play with. 🙃 5y
Lmstraubie @LibrarianRyan You never know. Your uncle could have been there. 5y
Lmstraubie @LibrarianRyan @cwarnier @mrp27 @Chelsibno @sblbooks @Peddler410 This question came about because at one point I thought maybe he was Livy's coping mechanism (like Crenshaw in the book of the same name). 5y
LibrarianRyan @Lmstraubie I think for the first 60 or so pages he was imaginary too, or a real chicken that she was imagining was more. 5y
mrp27 I initially thought Bob was imaginary as well. 5y
JaclynW @LibrarianRyan @mrp27 I thought Bob was imaginary at first too! I didn't have an imaginary friend, nor did any of my kids @Lmstraubie It makes sense for kids to create something like this when there is a lack of kids to play with. 5y

Question 5 #mgbuddyread

sblbooks Probably because she wants Bob to stay with her. 5y
mrp27 I agree, I don't think Bob's mother wants Bob to be lured away from her by Livy. 5y
LibrarianRyan @sblbooks @mrp27 maybe its not just to protect Bob, but to protect their entire civilization. They are magic, magic is feared. They do not look human or animal, therefore they are to be fear and eradicated. If the family is as old as it seems, they would have seen this through several human generations of destruction. But there I go to the dark side again. 5y
mrp27 @LibrarianRyan Good point! 5y

Question 4 #mgbuddyread

LibrarianRyan hummmmm. It's hard to say. The drought is because he is missing. However they have tunnels all over the world and can pop up every where. How is it only Australia is in drought. Is it because that is where he went missing. And if that was the case, wouldn't Bob's mom know to go look at the dry spot? I like how it plays in the story but I don't think it's an ecological message or else the entire planet would be in a drought. 5y
JaclynW @LibrarianRyan Great thoughts. I wondered similar things. It makes sense to be concentrated in Australia because that's where Bob went missing. But what took his family so long to find him ifvtgus were the case. Some of this didn't make sense to me. 5y

Question 3 #mgbuddyread

mrp27 I'm not entirely sure and I wish this was explored more. It could just be her insecurity about a new baby in the family. I thought it was going to connect to the well and perhaps a traumatic experience with it. 5y
Chelsibno I wonder if it has something to do with spending such a long time with her grandma as a young girl and not being able to remember any part of it. I remember as a child being very cautious or frightened by things that I couldn‘t remember happening before at an earlier age, like shots or flying on an airplane. 5y
LibrarianRyan @mrp27 @chelsibno

both your comments make sense, but could it be just her personality? I was never one to leave early, but I had a neighbor growing up who never made it full night at a sleep over. Livy seems pretty curious. being left with a grandma she only remembers by voice could be scary, or she could be feeling left out because once again the baby gets to go and do things she does not (stay with mom and go see new places).
5y
See All 11 Comments
mrp27 @LibrarianRyan Agreed, could just be a part of who Livy is. I just thought it would lead to something since it was mentioned more than once. 5y
JaclynW @mrp27 I thought it would be explored more as well. It seemed significant but then was kind of forgotten. Or did I miss something? I do think it's more likely her personality. My oldest daughter is like this. She has a thing about sleeping in HER bed, at HER house, with HER family. Even family vacations are rough for her. @LibrarianRyan @Chelsibno 5y
mrp27 @JaclynW I agree, it seemed significant then dropped. I totally get that for some kids it's just in their personality and like I mentioned earlier, the adult part of my brain runs away with this and wants more answers. 5y
JaclynW @mrp27 I actually wondered if some traumatic experience had occurred. This could explain her forgetting her grandmother and her aversion to sleepovers. Do people still do sleepovers by the way? Maybe with family? Sleepovers are a thing of the past where I live. None of my kids' friends do them. I always had sleepovers as a kid. 5y
mrp27 @JaclynW Same. We do lots of sleepovers with family and my niece will sleep over at her friends house on occasion but for the most part they don't seem to happen as frequently as they did when I was growing up. I used to love them too. 5y
Lmstraubie @mrp27 @JaclynW My boys always had sleepovers growing up (now 21 & 16). The little one will still have a friend stay over occasionally. 5y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie @mrp27 Most people around here do it for safety reasons (sexual predators). I guess a lot of parents had these experiences at sleepovers when they were younger. 5y

Question 2 #mgbuddyread

sblbooks It might be because she lives so far away. I think if she saw her everyday, would she would remember more. Also she did have a bit of a traumatic experience. 5y
Chelsibno I think @sblbooks has a point. I remember reading an article about how children remember earlier experiences better if adults or others talk about them with some frequency. It doesn‘t seem like Livy had anyone to reminisce about the experience with on a regular basis. 5y
mrp27 I agree with @Chelsibno but this is also another question that I thought would be explored more but never really was. 5y
See All 10 Comments
LibrarianRyan It kind of was explored. I think she doesn't remember because it's part of Bob's magic. Remember he gave her the chess piece and told her she had to hold on to it. He didn't remember that she wouldn't remember, just knew she had to hold it. But at the end, he sneaks away again to deliver the chess piece because now that he has his memories back, he knows she will forget without it. A little piece of magic.

@SBLbooks @Chelsibno @mrp27
5y
Lmstraubie @LibrarianRyan @cwarnier @mrp27 @Chelsibno @sblbooks @Peddler410 Thank you for these different perspectives. Definitely enlightening. 5y
JaclynW @LibrarianRyan I agree with you. I thought it was the magic. If EVERYONE knew about Bob and his magic, you'dhave the news media there. Haha! It was a way to keep Bob and his family safe. @Lmstraubie @cwarnier @mrp27 @Chelsibno @sblbooks @peddler410 5y
mrp27 @JaclynW I too agree (sort of) about the magic but I don't understand why the magic would make her forget her grandmother. I think this is the point in which my adult brain has to ask why and why isn't here a bigger explanation for that? 5y
JaclynW @mrp27 Oh yes, the grandmother. That is odd. Do they not regularly keep in touch? There really was no explanation for it. Odd. 5y
Lmstraubie @jaclynw A necessary magic 5y

Question 1 #mgbuddyread

Peddler410 I always love when a story is presented from multiple points of view. For me, it worked well for this story. 5y
sblbooks @Peddler410 Agreed I think it's better to have more than one perspective. 5y
Chelsibno I‘ve read several books that are told from two or more perspectives and have enjoyed them. When you have more than one main character, it can be beneficial. I especially like the ones that have two different authors write the different perspectives. I think the differing writing styles can show the character differences more acutely. 5y

mrp27 I always enjoy this literary tactic, makes the story more interesting. 5y
cwarnier I loved it in this book. It was very well written and done. 5y
LibrarianRyan I am not always a fan of this in books, but here it works well. I think it helps fill in the story since so much of Livy's memory has faded, either through time, or...

I went to Barnes & Noble (again!) today and took advantage of their 50% off sale. The bottom 4 were part of the sale, The Light of Paris was on clearance, and The Dire King completes my Jackaby collection. Maybe I'll finally read the series.

Does anyone else buy books in a series without reading the first one to make sure they like it?

ravenlee It depends on the series. If I‘m confident I‘ll like it and it seems binge-worthy I buy it all, or at least the first three or so. Others I dip my toe first. 6y

So I went into this one with high expectations... and was totally unimpressed. I just didn‘t care about it. The character Bob was pretty cute, but the overall premise didn‘t grab me. Oh well. 🤷‍♀️

In this middle grade novel, Livy goes from the U.S. to Australia to visit her grandmother for the first time in years. She has forgotten so much, even a small green not-zombie who she apparently promised to help find his way home. Bob waited 5 years in the bedroom closet for Livy‘s return. Together, they learn about friendship, family, memory, & promises. The story is fun & the characters memorable. *Read via NetGalley *Published today, May 1.

LiteraryinLawrence I LOVE Rebecca Stead‘s book When You Reach Me. Have you read that one? If so, how does it compare? 6y
tjwill @LiteraryinLititz I love When You Reach Me, too! I didn‘t like this one as much, but it‘s still well-done. It has some suspenseful parts and a satisfying ending. 6y
LiteraryinLawrence @tjwill I finally got around to borrowing this one from the library today! 6y
tjwill @LiteraryinLititz Great! I hope you enjoy it! I look forward to seeing your thoughts. 6y

Thank you School Library Journal for this ARC in exchange for my honest review... I LOVED this book! I want it to become a classic everyone reads. There is so much magic in all of us, whether human, animal or non-zombie, and "BOB" is a great reminder of that. My ARC did not have any illustrations, though it hints the final edition will. I hope the art will accurately depict the fantasy meets plausible, everyday life is an equally magical way.
