House of Broken Angels
House of Broken Angels | Luis Alberto Urrea
From a Pulitzer Prize finalist comes a powerful and unforgettable portrait of one Mexican American family and the American dream"One of the most vivid and engrossing family epics of the last twenty years."--Dave EggersOne of the Most Anticipated Books of 2018: Entertainment Weekly, Southern Living, The Millions, Chicago Review of Books, Bustle, Nylon, Book Riot, BookBub"All we do, mija, is love. Love is the answer. Nothing stops it. Not borders. Not death." In his final days, beloved and ailing patriarch Miguel Angel de La Cruz, affectionately called Big Angel, has summoned his entire clan for one last legendary birthday party. But as the party approaches, his mother, nearly one hundred, dies herself, leading to a farewell doubleheader in a single weekend. Among the guests is Big Angel's half brother, known as Little Angel, who must reckon with the truth that although he shares a father with his siblings, he has not, as a half gringo, shared a life.Across two bittersweet days in their San Diego neighborhood, the revelers mingle among the palm trees and cacti, celebrating the lives of Big Angel and his mother, and recounting the many inspiring tales that have passed into family lore, the acts both ordinary and heroic that brought these citizens to a fraught and sublime country and allowed them to flourish in the land they have come to call home. The story of the de La Cruzes is the quintessential American story. This indelible portrait of a complex family reminds us of what it means to be the first generation and to live two lives across one border. It takes us into a world we have not known, while reflecting back the hopes and dreams of our own families. Teeming with brilliance and humor, authentic at every turn, The House of Broken Angels is Luis Alberto Urrea at his best, and cements his reputation as a storyteller of the first rank.

Several 5⭐️ or almost 5⭐️ reads this month! Unusual for me as I‘m usually a star-grinch. Pictured are the top three that I highly recommend.

The pic of the smiling gnome in sunglasses is of my mother-in-law at a graduation party in WI and it makes me laugh every time I see it so thought I‘d share 🤣

Such a fantastic story of life. The good and bad, the messiness of it. And how in the end, it comes down to the relationships we have with one another, in all their imperfection. Great summer read. #LitsyAtoZ

This book 💔 *insert dramatic sigh*

Word origami. I don‘t know how else to describe how effortlessly Urrea creates his characters, sets the tone, constructs the plot and draws you in to the world of this Mexican American family. Initially I was skeptical as to how the author would make such a culture relatable in my eyes. Not only do I find this family relatable...but I will be expecting them for Thanksgiving.

A family saga set on two days, encompassing so much more. Big Angel is dying, but he wants one last, huge birthday party; his mother manages to die just ahead of him, so the book comprises the day of her funeral, and, one day later, his 70th birthday party. Funny, hard, sad, alarming, and filled with great characters and moments. Vivid about La Paz, about San Diego, and so much more. 4.5 ⭐️ ⬇️

suzisteffen Some content warnings: There is a lot of child abuse in this book, including against a kid who is queer, and against a kid who is told to “become a man“ through the abuse. There is an extended, but not explicit, repeated rape/sexual assault of a teenage boy. And the heterocentrism is really, really thick in this one. There are some deaths by, and some more threats of, gun violence. 5mo
DivineDiana I was just about to stack and then read your warnings. Thank you so much. 5mo
suzisteffen @DivineDiana I have mixed feelings about the affection most characters in the book feel for the main character because of some of this. I do think Urrea intended for us to see an evolution toward better parenting and a better understanding of the harm abuse causes over three generations of fathers, but ... yeah. It was a fantastically written book. But. 5mo

She stared up at him. “Yo no,” she said, shaking her head. “No more cook!” She waved her hands in front of herself. In Spanish, she said, “I was a cook for everybody for 50 years. I had to. Now I won‘t have to cook for anybody ever again. Oh no, Gabriel. I am a refugee from the apron.”
It had never occurred to Little Angel that cooking masterpieces every day had been a chore. “Get me coffee,” she said. “Sí?”
Off he went.
“I eat hamburrgurrs now!”

suzisteffen ... Perla called. “Subway! Cheerios!” 5mo
suzisteffen And with this, Little Angel, who‘s supposedly kinda woke, starts to understand how Mexican feast always came together when he was a kid. #womenswork #isdone 5mo

I love following Luis and his wife on Twitter, and I have enjoyed his books, both nonfiction and novels. I was bummed this was not in at the library while the #ToB2019 was going on. 🧐 But cool cool, I can‘t read every book on time, I guess. (FOMO is so real with books tho, which is why I had to institute an alternating-month-owned-book-not-library-books-TBR-pile rule😂.) ANYWAY, here we go!

Book club + birthday celebration tonight with some of my favorite girlfriends. I am so lucky to be able to share a love of books and reading with such fantastic women.

This book was highly rated by all of us. It‘s about love & family, being Mexican, borders & how we create distance/closeness w/ people different than us. And death (a favorite topic of mine). It‘s poetic. It‘s reflective. It‘s funny and sad. Urrea has a glaring gift for writing.

I‘m so glad I found this after reading @BarbaraBB ‘s glowing review of it. I think I would have liked it better in print, so it would be easier to keep track of all the characters, but Urrea was a great audio narrator. It gave me “This is Where I Leave You”-vibes, with its focus on family relationships, the uncovering of secrets and its humour. This was darker, though, but definitely a great book!

I normally don‘t read much literary fiction (I‘m a plot-driven novel type of person). But I heard Urrea speak about this book at TFOB this year. His story of how his brother‘s final birthday party just before his death inspired him (Urrea) to write it, and how it truly was the only time in his life he ever kissed his brother was so touching that I cried during the panel. #howjessreadsin2019

I liked this boisterous and sad book about a large Mexican-American family and their dying patriarch. While it was sometimes hard to keep the characters and their relationships to each other straight due to the jumping narrative, it added up to be greater than the sum of its parts. I really enjoyed this book. Urrea focuses on end of the life of Big Angel as he buries his mother and prepares for his own imminent death. The story encompasses both his entire family--broadening to include his parents, his siblings, his wife and her siblings, his children and grandchildren--and his past. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod The realism of the characters was my favorite element of the novel: their lives are flawed and alternately joyful and full of sadness; some characters struggle with navigating their love for their Mexican culture and their lives in America, and, for others, there seems to be no conflict. While there are big moments, none of those moments feels too big or too outlandish. Well-told, moving novel. 8mo

I adored how this combines warmth and humour with seriously poignant stuff. The narration (both by the writer and the performer) was so natural, precise and witty. Never read any Urrea before but I definitely will, I hope all his prose is this good.

This may be my new favorite on the #ToB2019 shortlist. What a storyteller Urrea is. All these stories come together during the last birthday of Big Angel, who is dying of cancer. Surrounded by his family and neighbours, all with their own Mexican roots and their lives in the US. It is a cacophony of voices, sad and hilarious but full of love.

This story is about a large Mexican-American family who is losing their patriarch, sooner than most of them realize. The family is large, sprawling, and cacophonous as is the narrative structure where they exist. While that choice served the characters and the feel of the novel well, it left me, as a reader, feeling on the outside. Despite this, there are moments of true warmth, love, and laughter that make it well worth reading. #TOB2019

This was a beautifully written story of a Mexican-American family. Nothing extraordinary, just family. found myself thinking of my own family and it‘s many characters both here in the US and in Mexico and how the miles may separate us but our love for each other keeps us close. This story is set in two days, one during a funeral and the other during the last birthday of Big Angel, who is losing the battle with cancer.

The writing was great. I think I did not have any connection with cultural references and lifestyles of the characters. The story does reference some of the issues that Mexican immigrants face that have been in the media recently.

Listening to this book is giving lots of mixed feelings. It captures Hispanic families so well, that it makes me miss mine, but it also reflects a lot of issues like toxic masculinity, violence, racism, which get me sad.

July stats:
9 finished - 5 paper/4 audio, 6 Fiction/3 Non
9 authors - 3 female, 1 POC
~3,151 pages, ~932,245 words
The tagged book was hands down my favorite.

This is my first time ever doing stats, and I'm simply in awe of how much more reading most of you accomplish than me. And that's with a whole week's vacation spent reading this month!

Aimeesue Urrea's going to be at the National Book Festival this year. Can't wait! 1y
