The Master and Margarita (Vintage Classic Russians Series)
The Master and Margarita (Vintage Classic Russians Series) | Mikhail Bulgakov
THE ORIGINAL AND BEST TRANSLATION BY MICHAEL GLENNY 50th Anniversary Edition Afterwards, when it was frankly too late, descriptions were issued of the man: expensive grey suit, grey beret, one green eye and the other black. He arrives in Moscow one hot summer afternoon with various alarming accomplices, including a demonic, fast-talking black cat. When he leaves, the asylums are full and the forces of law and order are in disarray. Only the Master, a man devoted to truth, and Margarita, the woman he loves, can resist the devil's onslaught. Brilliant and blackly comic, The Master and Margarita was repressed by Stalin's authorities and only published after the author's death. The Vintage Classic Russians Series: Published for the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution, these are must-have, beautifully designed editions of six epic masterpieces that have survived controversy, censorship and suppression to influence decades of thought and artistic expression.

Sectarian, secular, atheist or agnostic this is a novel worth reading. It is a perfect example of Russian emotion, spirituality and morality exploding onto the page. Don't expect a dull moment, you won't get one.

Book 1 is nothing short of a literary masterpiece. Presenting a smorgasbord of interesting characters, Bulgakov takes us on a wild ride that becomes increasingly bizzare yet unfathomably compelling! Book 2 doesn't live up to the highs of the first half, because Bulgakov makes the decision of focusing on 2-3 principal characters and takes them on a rather safe path, something that feels antithetical to the blazingly original first half.

Caroline2 Ohhhh! I‘ve just ordered this off Amazon!! Glad to hear it‘s good. 😯 👍 3w
nathandrake1997 @Caroline2 Yes it is quite good....hope you have a good time reading 😄🍻👍 3w
emtobiasz Funny, I had almost exactly the opposite experience— I found book 1 a slog and book 2 compelling enough to fly through! 🤷‍♀️ 3w
nathandrake1997 @emtobiasz I liked book 2 as well (the ballroom sequence was magnificent), but compared to book 1 (which was a riveting collection of one stunning and baffling scene after another) it was a bit of a letdown for me 3w

This is nearly indescribable, but I‘ll try. The devil and his retinue pay a visit to Stalinist Russia, wreaking colorful havoc with style among its enchanted (and later disenchanted) citizens. Using magical realism and rapier-sharp satire, Bulgakov addresses communism, literary censorship, and Soviet culture with a light yet piercing touch that feels strangely optimistic and unexpectedly delightful. Oh AND there‘s a giant black cat who talks. 😻

I am 38 pages in and intrigued! Not quite sure what is going on but I think I like it!
Look at all these beautiful covers for this book. Mine is the bottom right hand corner. I feel short changed with my cover. ☹️

BookwormM I loved this book 2mo
Izai.Amorim Very sorry for the election results... 2mo
MayJasper Thanks so much @Izai.Amorim I am deeply disappointed. I so wanted help for those of us in poverty against the hard hearted who will now be able to continue to punish the poor with sanctions and desperately low financial support. I also wanted a serious programme for the climate emergency challenges. 2mo
MayJasper And of course to revoke this incredibly reckless path of separation from the rest of the EU and the decades of peace building among its members and of course the peace treaty in Northern Ireland. But it appears I was asking for the moon. 2mo
Izai.Amorim @MayJasper No, that's what most people wanted, too. They won with 43%. A minority. Very sad. It will be worse than Thatcher. At least when she started the country was healthy. Now after 10 years of austerity, the UK is already scorched land. Can't believe working people voted for this... 2mo

Hello friends! I‘ve been wanting to read The Master and Margarita for awhile and had picked this version up at a Half Price for a few dollars. However, I would like to read the best possible English translation. I also want to read the complete version. I like detail, but also would like it to read as close to the original as possible. Internet searches on Reddit have been helpful, but I wanted to ask the Litsy community, which version is best?

Palimpsest Hey friends, still want a recommendation on what is the best complete English translation? Thank you! (edited) 4mo

“The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov is another reminder that we are all, in the words of George Eliot, “struggling, erring human creatures.” I loved the book and learned a lot about Soviet Russia thanks to the detailed notes sprinkled throughout. I‘m usually not one for super complex story lines so two of the three story lines kind of went over my head. I know what happened but it took me until he very end to understand why these three seemingly random plots were happening in one book. Especially when the third, the only one I really understood completely, didn‘t start until part two! But I‘m a hopeless romantic so that‘s why I understood Margarita‘s story line better than the other two.

One of the first (maybe the first) magic realism novels in Russian literature. Forbidden to print for decades, it was first published in Russian language in 90‘s, and immediately became a cult novel. I‘m reading it second time, after 20 years, and it reads differently. I think I feel Master‘s anguish more, and Margarita‘s terrible loneliness. But will see.. Only half way through.

Emilymdxn I loved the book but agree it‘s not the most accessible book - you have to like dark weird very dense books. There‘s a really really great play adaptation which I saw in London, if you like the aesthetic but don‘t wanna read it I really recommend looking out for a production of the play! 13mo

This one has been in my #MtTBR for almost a decade, so I was excited to dust it off for this month‘s #ReadAroundTheWorld in #Russia. But I have to admit that I think my hopes were too high for this... while I loved some parts, and the translation felt smooth, I guess I just expected something else... I think it would be a great read for a discussion group though! @JenP

I‘m giving this a pick, because it is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me, and I did really enjoy its weirdness! But... I could have done without the Pontius Pilate chapters, and I would have loved a bit more focus on Margarita. In spite of this, I still had a lot of fun while reading in, and Bulgakov is one of the more readable Russian writers, once you get into his style 👍
