An Ember in the Ashes
An Ember in the Ashes | Sabaa Tahir
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTELLERAMAZON'S BEST YOUNG ADULT BOOK OF 2015PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD WINNER - FAVORITE FANTASYBUSTLE'S BEST YOUNG ADULT BOOK OF 2015 “This novel is a harrowing, haunting reminder of what it means to be human — and how hope might be kindled in the midst of oppression and fear.” — The Washington Post “An Ember in the Ashes could launch Sabaa Tahir into JK Rowling territory…It has the addictive quality of The Hunger Games combined with the fantasy of Harry Potter and the brutality of Game of Thrones.”—Public Radio International "An Ember in the Ashes glows, burns, and smolders—as beautiful and radiant as it is searing."—Huffington Post    “A worthy novel – and one as brave as its characters.” —The New York Times Book Review   A “deft, polished debut”  (Publishers Weekly, starred review), Sabaa Tahir‘s AN EMBER IN THE ASHES is a thought-provoking, heart-wrenching and pulse-pounding read. Set in a rich, high-fantasy world with echoes of ancient Rome, it tells the story of a slave fighting for her family and a young soldier fighting for his freedom. Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.   Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.   It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.   But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.   There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself. From the Hardcover edition.

I don‘t know why it took me so long to read this book because it lived up to all the amazing things I‘ve heard about it! I‘m so glad that I found all three books at my library because I can‘t wait a second more to start the second book. 5/5🌟

According to her own twitter post, the author asked for this cover change at book three and as the series continues. As an AoC she felt it important that her books represent her in image as well as words. She wanted the diversity in the pages seen on the cover as well.

Sweetkokoro Is that larger image the original cover? I have seen the red version with the girl numerous times and it just doesn‘t grab me. That other cover though would have pulled me into checking it out. 2w
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro Yes the large cover is the original cover. Book two was similar with a blue cover. Books three (the green one on the bottom right) was the first in the new covers, and the rereleased the other books in that style as well. 2w
Sweetkokoro Dang I wish they kept with the original look. The newer covers just look like so many other YA books on the market so they arent eye catching for me, while the original stood out. (edited) 2w
See All 6 Comments
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro I agree. But I also see the authors point. The newer covers show the middle eastern or maybe Indian (i can not remember which) ethnicity of the characters. 2w
Sweetkokoro Yah i can see that too, but it still gets lost in the sea of other covers that have a similar style, regardless of what the people look like. Its doesn‘t stand out so people like me, look it over because its boring and been done before, you know. 2w
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro Compleatly agree. With middle grade they are trying to hard to make so many books look similar to TLT that it becomes a see of blandness. 2w

Well this took a surprise turn. I was struggling with this a bit when I first started it because it's definitely different and a bit confusing on the world building. However, it got better through the second half and then I couldn't stop reading it.

I'm a total idiot, this book has been on my TBR shelf for years (literally like 3 years) and I had convinced myself that it wouldn't be any good so I didn't even give it a chance. Cut to the present: me ordering (with 2 day shipping) the 2nd and 3rd book to An Ember in the Ashes the minute I finished it.

Book_yogi Isn‘t it so good! 2mo

Picked the audio based on a friend's recommendation of the book. Ms. Tahir is a gifted writer, and I quickly finished the book, only to get to the end and realize it was the first in a series. (At the time I finished the other two had not been released yet)

SquiBella @DannyHattan it‘s a close call between Kings of the Wyld and An Ember in the Ashes. They were both phenomenal reads from near opposite ends of the Fantasy-spectrum. Enjoyable first book of this series. Memorable and likeable characters. Definitely a pick for me with a few eye rolls for the double love triangle, (love square?). That being said, you will definitely root for Elias as well as Laia. Already borrowed the next in the series, trying to wait until tomorrow to start it...

Sabaa Tahir is a goddess among mortal men, a true Kehanni. She weaves tales of death and destruction like they are barbed lullabies, agonizing yet hypnotic. I read through this story with such frantic fervor, I almost forgot to breathe. From page one, I found my heart in my throat and a weighted pit in my stomach. I traded sleep in search of a remedy between the pages to ease my endless worry. Alas, Sabaa left me gasping on the edge of a cliff.

I don‘t know how I‘ve managed it, but every book I‘ve read this year has become “my favorite book in the world”. An Ember in the Ashes is packing one powerful punch. Holy moly, it‘s such a dark and wickedly intense story. Ooh, I just got shivers thinking about it. I‘ve been reading with my heart in my throat. Between this and Assassin‘s Apprentice, I‘ve given up all hope for sleep the next few days.

Wow! The last chapters of this book really make it all worth it. I started this book not really being all that into it, but something about it just kept pulling me back in. Maybe it was the pure goodness in Elias or the raw courage in Laia that kept me reading. Or maybe the haunting storytelling by author Sabaa Tahir kept me craving more. Whatever it was, this book had it and I can‘t wait to get my hands on the second one! #readingchallenge2019
