Midnight Line: A Jack Reacher Novel
Midnight Line: A Jack Reacher Novel | Lee Child
#1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child returns with a gripping new powerhouse thriller featuring Jack Reacher, "one of this century's most original, tantalizing pop-fiction heroes" (The Washington Post). Reacher takes a stroll through a small Wisconsin town and sees a class ring in a pawn shop window: West Point 2005. A tough year to graduate: Iraq, then Afghanistan. The ring is tiny, for a woman, and it has her initials engraved on the inside. Reacher wonders what unlucky circumstance made her give up something she earned over four hard years. He decides to find out. And find the woman. And return her ring. Why not? So begins a harrowing journey that takes Reacher through the upper Midwest, from a lowlife bar on the sad side of small town to a dirt-blown crossroads in the middle of nowhere, encountering bikers, cops, crooks, muscle, and a missing persons PI who wears a suit and a tie in the Wyoming wilderness. The deeper Reacher digs, and the more he learns, the more dangerous the terrain becomes. Turns out the ring was just a small link in a far darker chain. Powerful forces are guarding a vast criminal enterprise. Some lines should never be crossed. But then, neither should Reacher. Praise for #1 bestselling author Lee Child and his Jack Reacher series "There's a reason why Child is considered the best of the best in the thriller genre."--Associated Press "Jack Reacher is today's James Bond."--Ken Follett

Each time I pick up the next book in this series, I can‘t wait to see what Jack Reacher is getting into next. He gets on a bus and during a stop in Wisconsin, he finds a class ring for West Point 2005. He becomes intrigued about the ring‘s owner. He purchases the ring and sets out on a mission to find the owner to return the ring. Sounds like a relatively simple task, right? Oh, it‘s definitely not!

I couldn‘t get over the amount of time devoted purely to directions! Ten steps to the left, then up fifteen steps, ten steps down the corridor etc...
The plot felt formulaic and predictable. Reacher seems like a stereotype of a macho-hero and I‘m guessing he is as stolid and stoic in every single book. Is that part of the appeal for this best-selling character? It was ok, but it didn‘t keep me guessing and I won‘t be keen for the next instalment.

Amybelinda Does anyone have a favourite Reacher novel to recommend that you enjoyed more than this one? I‘m wondering if some are better than others? 4y

Lee Child CLEARLY has never been to Wisconsin (where this story starts.) How can I tell? When Reacher walks into a pawn shop in rural WI, the clerk doesn‘t immediately greet him. There‘s also no mention of the Packers. #ohmygodmypackers

Lee Child's Jack Reacher series is comfort food for me, and I needed this read. (I've been needing a lot of comfort food books this month!) Reacher predictably solved a series of problems and helped random people he met on his journey. The Midnight Line held an unexpected consideration of the opioid crisis, something on my mind since reading Beth Macy's Dopesick. This was number 22 in this series of great, formulaic, suspense and action.

Another entry in my “series catch-up” goal. Not sure how I missed this one especially as it has a Wisconsin connection. I listened to this one and always Dick Hill‘s narration. His voice will always be Jack Reacher to me. I enjoyed this one - especially all the supporting characters.

I don't know whether it's just me but I've become bored with this series 🙄 I used to love them, they were so exciting and I literally couldn't put them down but the last few have not excited me at all. Don't know whether it's because they're all a bit samey. Hoping Past Tense changes my mind in November and Reacher is back to his best!

Dark gray sky all weekend, satisfaction with chores all done. Jack Reacher perfect to relax to with coffee on Sunday morning. He‘s tracking down the owner of a West Point ring, small women‘s size he found in a pawn shop to make sure she‘s not in harm‘s way. He does, and there‘s a choice for a moral solution over a legal one. Trouble on the way, and so is the rain.

An immensely satisfying and emotional journey with America‘s giant hero, Jack Reacher and his tooth brush.
Reacher is off to another unknown destination when sees a 2005 West Point class ring in the window of a pawnshop in a small town in Wisconsin. It‘s a small ring, made for a woman and has a black stone in the middle. Some initials are engraved inside the ring. https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/blog/the-midnight-line-jack-reacher-22

“Nothing of value is ever achieved in the morning.” - Lee Child

AceOnRoam Lee Child 😎 6y
WordyForever @AceOnRoam he is so funny! I‘m actually considering reading his books now. Apparently his writing process is to meander out of bed at like noon, drink 6 cups of coffee, smoke 6 Camels, and start writing around 2. He also said when he was 17 he had a job working for a talent agent who mostly booked strippers 😂 6y
AceOnRoam You're so lucky to have been able to see him talk. Apparently tho' he works quite late into the evening. I think he used to be a cop/investigator too? I'm just glad he's still writing and not contracting out to shadow writers. There's a lot of speculation but his last book was definitely a classic Jack Reacher and I would bet it was definitely written by him. 6y
WordyForever @AceOnRoam it seems that way from how he was talking. He was the only one who doesn‘t find writing difficult at all. He said a book a year is easy for him, and the others all looked at him like he had 2 heads 6y

After Jack Reacher sees a West Point class ring in a pawnshop, he decides to return it to its owner. What seems like a simple act of kindness finds Reacher involved with an array of unsavory characters stretching across a number of states. Lee Child is a master plotter, and this book incorporates an array of elements so that it seems as though it were ripped from the headlines. I have read all of Child‘s books. This is definitely one of his best.

Another classic Jack Reacher read- which kept me entertained throughout. As always this had all the hallmarks, a bit of vigilante justice, great fight scenes, sparse dialogue, a bit of mystery and a decent crime. Although there was a bit of a lull, pace-wise in the middle, I enjoyed the commentary on treatment of veterans, especially those wounded in combat.

After two consecutive mediocre thrillers Mr. Child hits this one out of the park. The way plot unveils with some unexpected twists is amazing and keeps you hooked. Some might even say this is the best Jack Reacher thriller. Hard to argue with that!! 😉

P.S. I would have liked the retired Fed to be more than just a driver. 😑

Lee Child has argued that he has never described Jack Reacher however, he comes pretty close to it in this book. And, Tom Cruise does not come to mind. That said it is a good Reacher story and certainly fills the time sync of beltway traffic.

It‘s probably cheating, especially given I used No Middle Name yesterday but... The Midnight Line is the 23rd Lee Child Reacher novel and since I just bought it, I‘m going with it for #NovemberByTheNumbers for the 23rd!!! I haven‘t read it yet and suspect it might become my new “Emergency Reacher” 😊😊😊. I liked this one more then the last few Reacher Books. I liked the premise of this story (Reacher searching for the woman who owned a West Point class ring that he found in a pawn shop). And, he wasn‘t as omnipotent in this book. I do wish the editors would edit the fight scenes in the book(s). These scenes also usually go on for more pages then necessary. But, this book, was more about a missing veteran and the fallout from war.
