Nice Numbers
Nice Numbers | John Barnes
10 posts | 1 read
In this intriguing book, John Barnes takes us on a journey through aspects of numbers much as he took us on a geometrical journey in Gems of Geometry. Similarly originating from a series of lectures for adult students at Reading and Oxford University, this book touches a variety of amusing and fascinating topics regarding numbers and their uses both ancient and modern. The author informs and intrigues his audience with both fundamental number topics such as prime numbers and cryptography, and themes of daily needs and pleasures such as counting one's assets, keeping track of time, and enjoying music. Puzzles and exercises at the end of each lecture offer additional inspiration, and numerous illustrations accompany the reader. Furthermore, a number of appendices provides in-depth insights into diverse topics such as Pascal's triangle, the Rubik cube, Mersenne's curious keyboards, and many others. A theme running through is the thought of what is our favourite number. Written in an engaging and witty style and requiring only basic school mathematical knowledge, this book will appeal to both young and mature readers fascinated by the curiosities of numbers.

I had an absolute BLAST this month participating in #Scarathlon2020. Who would have thought a competition during a pandemic could be so fun? Even when at times you thought it might get stressful, it wasn't, because I was doing what I loved... READING. A GIGANTIC thank you to @StayCurious and @Clwojick for hosting such a fun and wonderful event. I can't wait for the #WinterGames. Good luck to everyone! Go #TeamHarkness! 😁

KarenUK @Puredragonstar I managed a restaurant/wine bar in London, and had someone from almost every place on earth working with me at some point... but no Americans! Though lots of my customers were American as it was in the financial district... 6y
ReadingVampire I know it‘s weird to say but I‘ve always wanted to move to England or Scotland. I just never known anyone to make the move I wonder how difficult it would be to do. I wouldn‘t want to give up my citizenship here. But I would love to work on a visa and move over there... sigh... 6y

So, I started using Litsy at the beginning of January. It‘s been so handy to look at my Litfluence to quickly see how many books & pages I‘ve read this year. I kind-of wish there was a way to reset the counter for 2018. Or to have a separate counter for each year, as well as a cumulative one. I‘ll miss it! I guess I‘ll just have to be better about updating my Goodreads account. 😞 #nicheproblems

Robothugs Maybe you could just write down your numbers and then check at the end of next year? 😊 A lot of us still use Goodreads, too. 6y
monalyisha @Robothugs Oh, definitely. I‘ll jot the #‘s down in my notebook & do some math. Ugh, math. Even uncomplicated math makes me queasy.😉😂 6y
Robothugs 😂 I totally get it! Math and I are not friends! 6y

monalyisha @Robothugs I do still use Goodreads. It‘s my primary method for keeping track of my TBR & deciding what to read next. I‘ve just been bad lately about updating once I‘ve read something. (I tend to do it in big waves when I work my every-other-Saturday shift. If I remember/feel like it/my coworker isn‘t completely talking my ear off. 😅 She‘s a Chatty Cathy. Chatty Liz. Haha.)
