A Trick of the Light
A Trick of the Light: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel | Louise Penny
A New York Times Notable Crime Book and Favorite Cozy for 2011 A Publishers Weekly Best Mystery/Thriller books for 2011 "Penny has been compared to Agatha Christie [but] it sells her short. Her characters are too rich, her grasp of nuance and human psychology too firm...." --Booklist (starred review) "Hearts are broken," Lillian Dyson carefully underlined in a book. "Sweet relationships are dead." But now Lillian herself is dead. Found among the bleeding hearts and lilacs of Clara Morrow's garden in Three Pines, shattering the celebrations of Clara's solo show at the famed Muse in Montreal. Chief Inspector Gamache, the head of homicide at the Sret du Qubec, is called to the tiny Quebec village and there he finds the art world gathered, and with it a world of shading and nuance, a world of shadow and light. Where nothing is as it seems. Behind every smile there lurks a sneer. Inside every sweet relationship there hides a broken heart. And even when facts are slowly exposed, it is no longer clear to Gamache and his team if what they've found is the truth, or simply a trick of the light.

This #audiobook examines the scars that run deep and can influence a person‘s life over decades. It looks at what it takes to move beyond those scars in a real way. It explores themes of artistic and personal development. It‘s a quiet book and a solid addition to this excellent series.

A lovely Sunday with one of my favourite detectives 😁 good read and I just guessed in time!

Another great read by Louise Penny! I must admit... I spent the entire book expecting the culprit to be peter but was 100% shocked by who really did it! I know and I mean KNOW Peter has to be the perpetrator at some point. I feel like it such a tease he hasn‘t killed anyone yet. He more than once has seemed to have the motive. Anyone agree with me!?

I'm kind of bummed that I didn't get as much reading in as I wanted this #24in48, but I should be able to hit twelve hours by midnight. It's such a pleasure to be back in Three Pines. #cozyinthesun

Is it just me or do Louise Penny‘s books in the Inspector Gamache series just keep getting better and better? In this seventh book in the series, a murdered woman is found in Clara Morrow‘s garden the night after her first art exhibit at a prominent Montreal museum. As usual the mystery is interesting, but the evolution of the main characters‘ relationships really elevates this series to another level.

CarolynM I agree. I've recently read the 9th in the series and it's still getting better. 7mo
Ncostell @CarolynM. That‘s good to hear! I‘m glad that I still have more in the series to look forward to reading. 7mo
kspenmoll They get better each year! I am awaiting her new one being released in November I think. I have the one before that yet to read. I am envious that you have more to read but I can always reread!!! 6mo
Ncostell @kspenmoll Yes, I know that feeling of wanting to read something that you really enjoy but don‘t want to reach the end either! 6mo

I‘ll admit this is not my typical genre. Some of the writing was great, but artists and art lovers not knowing the term chiaroscuro and otherwise intelligent, well-informed people seemingly completely unaware of how AA works…? It‘s a little bit too much for me to swallow.

Day 25 - #trick #blackcatchallenge

This is book 7 in one of my favorite series.

“Penny writes with grace and intelligence about complex people struggling with complex emotions. But her great gift is her uncanny ability to describe what might seem indescribable – the play of light, the sound of celestial music, a quiet sense of peace.” ―New York Times Book Review

Oh no! Yet another murder in Three Pines! At least it's an excuse to spend more time with these unusual characters. I guessed the murderer in this one, which I almost never do. It didn't spoil my reading pleasure.

Just flew through this one! My favorite in this series so far. The characters are finally becoming deeper and more three-dimensional to me, and I find the stories are getting a bit grittier and less cozy. I‘ve already put the next one on hold and I can‘t wait to ses where she takes these characters next.

Puzzles ‘til the end!

When a body is found in Clara Morrow‘s flowerbeds, Chief Inspector Gamache, Inspector Beauvoir, and ascending star Agent Lacoste return to the idyllic village of Three Pines.

Though less structurally daring than its predecessor - Bury Your Dead - this is Penny‘s most confident village-located mystery so far.

I kept returning to this series this year. I love the quiet intelligence and humanity of the things that happen to the Three Pines community, outside Montreal. A cozy mystery label is too quaint for what I think this series offers. The audiobooks are well done and will be a great companion during a long day of Xmas cooking tomorrow. Shhh! Please don't tell Louise Penny such beautiful prose is not standard fare for mystery novels. Most authors don't flesh out the characters so well you feel the pain of their betrayal. Also, it is just pretty.

Book 2 of #24in48! I woke up really tired today so I finished up an audio book. I love this series and often wish I could live in the small village of Three Pines. There is always a good mystery in each book, but I really think it's the characters that keep me coming back. Penny's characters are very human and in each book they continue to grow. Proud to share citizenship with someone like Louise Penny. The little nuggets of beauty hidden throughout her crime novels just blow me away — "Clara‘s portrait wasn‘t simply of an angry old woman. She had in fact painted the Virgin Mary. Elderly. Abandoned by a world weary and wary of miracles. A world too busy to notice the stone rolled back.” ??????

#tbt One last Louise Penny post for this week - 5 years ago today, I was reading A Trick Of The Light. This series is often my reading material at this time of the year. Penny's over-arching themes include duality, light vs. darkness, and yes, good vs. evil. She shows that we are all so very human. Her village of Three Pines in Quebec was a refuge in times past and remains that for her characters. But evil still creeps in at times...

There are several series in my heart, but a) I don't own them and therefore can't photograph them, and b) this might just be #1 anyway. I'll be promoting the Inspector Gamache books with my last breath, for the characters, the writing, the depth, the poetry, THE FOOD and the fact that they made me want to move to Canada even before this election. #24in48

[DELETED] 2232195534 This series is my favorite one ever. Truly. And I read a lot of series. I agree with all you said. Louise Penny's writing is inspired at times. Such beautiful words and phrases. I used to place her books in the hands of every library patron that I could! ❤️ 3y
