How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe: A Novel | 
pickEvery so often I encounter a book that feels like serendipity. If I had read this years ago, I would have panned it. I slogged through the beginning. I liked his world building, but had a hard time caring about the narrator. Then I got to the last 100 pages. I can see how it would be a bit of a downer, but he presents a very real articulation of life that is rarely heard in times where we must always portray our optimal selves.
so-soPathos and dry humour employed in the expression of the immigrant and first generation experience, slamming up against a wall of racial and class/economic privilege, seems to be Charles Yu's stock in trade. So does experimental writing styles. I'm basing this off of having only read Interior Chinatown before this one, but they do share some similarities.

This book reminds me strongly of John Dies at the End, it's all very meta in that the very book is a plot device & the author shares the same name as the protagonist. I was intimidated of this book a long time because science isn't my strength but you don't have to be a time traveler to appreciate the story of a guy trying to escape death and fix his life and family ties.
pickOne of the odder things I've read this year. Meta speculative fiction that takes time travel & turns the normal version of it on its edge. The author plays a lot with language & tenses & your brain gets a bit turned around trying to apply the linear-like concepts that help you keep track of things to a story that's not completely linear. An interesting read to be sure but definitely one where you need time to concentrate on what you're reading.

pickThis book is fascinating and boring, at once. The idea—a guy who does nothing but zip around various universes fixing broken time machines—is great. But he‘s depressed and fairly inarticulate so it feels like you‘re spending a lot of time with a morose 13-year-old even though he‘s supposedly 30-ish. I‘m half way through and I keep reading because occasionally there‘s something great, like the bit above. #scifi
pickLove love love love loved this book! I wanted an escape, but got so much more. It has depth and lots to chew on. It‘s a book I will read again and it will only grow more interesting each time bc each time I will find something new.
I can‘t put enough love stickers on this. Do you like science fiction? Do you find meta fiction fascinating?? Do you like smart writing?? READ THIS BOOK! Omg. I keep going “No way!” And “that‘s genius!” I don‘t want to post all the cool things bc I think that would detract from the experience of reading this. Holy 🐮 this is a good book.

so-soI dig the experimental structure of the book itself, and I loved the conceptions of a kind of mathematics to describe narratives...I just felt like there wasn't much more going on than huge passages of narration with not much happening in too many places. Be aware: the title might lead you to think this is a comedy. It is not.
This book describes feels I didn't even know I had. Soooo good
