Colony in a Nation
Colony in a Nation | Chris Hayes
America likes to tell itself that it inhabits a postracial world, yet nearly every empirical measure--wealth, unemployment, incarceration, school segregation--reveals that racial inequality has barely improved since 1968, when Richard Nixon became our first -law and order- president. With the clarity and originality that distinguished his prescient bestseller, Twilight of the Elites, Chris Hayes upends our national conversation on policing and democracy in a book of wide-ranging historical, social, and political analysis.Hayes contends our country has fractured in two: the Colony and the Nation. In the Nation, we venerate the law. In the Colony, we obsess over order, fear trumps civil rights, and aggressive policing resembles occupation. A Colony in a Nation explains how a country founded on justice now looks like something uncomfortably close to a police state. How and why did Americans build a system where conditions in Ferguson and West Baltimore mirror those that sparked the American Revolution?A Colony in a Nation examines the surge in crime that began in the 1960s and peaked in the 1990s, and the unprecedented decline that followed. Drawing on close-hand reporting at flashpoints of racial conflict, as well as deeply personal experiences with policing, Hayes explores cultural touchstones, from the influential -broken windows- theory to the -squeegee men- of late-1980s Manhattan, to show how fear causes us to make dangerous and unfortunate choices, both in our society and at the personal level. With great empathy, he seeks to understand the challenges of policing communities haunted by the omnipresent threat of guns. Most important, he shows that a more democratic and sympathetic justice system already exists--in a place we least suspect.A Colony in a Nation is an essential book--searing and insightful--that will reframe our thinking about law and order in the years to come.

Another #BLMReadingList adjacent pick, I found this to be a great follow up to Michelle Alexander‘s phenomenal The New Jim Crow. Hayes book is about how our inner cities and black communities are policed like colonies, inside our larger nation. It‘s insightful for different reasons, and although I‘d recommend Alexander‘s book 1st (always!!) this one helped me understand how policing works very different in some places than others!

4⭐️
A great read about the inequity of the justice system. Hayes explains things to white America in a way that shouldn‘t provoke defensiveness. And he puts some real responsibility on them in very basic ways. We were deluged this year with social media stories of BBQ Becky & her ilk. Here, Hayes had already thoughtfully posed the questions of when & why to call the cops, and then laid out here how that plays out for POC.

I was unfamiliar with Chris Hayes‘ TV career but learned of him via following Rebecca Traister on Twitter during the Kavanaugh ordeal. His posts impressed me, and when I realized he‘d written this one (long on my TBR) it became a must-read. I tend to seek out works on this topic by people of color, but this was very well-written and, I think, quite valuable. Finishing it on Election Eve makes me sad, scared, and hopeful.

vivastory I really liked this one. He's one of my favorite MSNBC hosts. If you haven't read it yet, along similar lines is 5y

This awesome read put me across the finish line of my #Goodreads Reading Challenge!
Chris Hayes delves right into the history and consequences of "law and ORDER" policies here in America and how they've created "colonies" of minorities ruled by different standards in the interest of maintaining order. I only wish he'd delved deeper and made the book longer. I highly recommend this one...

This book is a quick read covering many aspects of racism in the US. I appreciate the incorporation of history and statistics in the narrative. While no means a deep dive, it is timely and cites some great books for more intensive reading. It's a great place to start learning as well as a good overview for anyone looking to understand various aspects of this ongoing problem.

To say that America is divided is nothing new, but Chris Hayes brings such a fresh perspective to this reality by suggesting that there really are two entirely distinct Americas. Hayes is an extremely engaging writer, and I was hooked by his conversational style and keen insights within the first couple pages. I consider myself pretty well-educated on the topics he addresses, but still felt like I came out of this with a new way of seeing things.

Notafraidofwords @mauveandrosysky well I loved In a colony and my parents did too (for them more physically, San Sebastián PR). I didn't realize what Hayes was talking about until 8th grade when I won a debate tournament and got to visit a mostly middle To upper class school and realize that they're windows were not barred and their textbooks were brand new and no metal detectors. Before that, I just assumed everyone was poor like me and my classmates. 7y
Notafraidofwords @mauveandrosysky somehow, I never assumed that some people had it better because we didn't have cable. Until about 8th grade, we got cable and I realized that other people were living great lives and going to private school and they didn't live in the projects like I did. & then reading happened. Reading changed everything. 7y
mauveandrosysky @Notafraidofwords thank you for sharing your experience. And yes, it's amazing how much reading can change everything. (edited) 7y

I've had this since it came out and finally got around to reading it. So sad how little we have learned as a nation. Chris Hayes describes well the two different Americas, the Colony and the Nation and your race determines which you live in. I would very much like to see what a person of color thinks of this book.

Notafraidofwords I lived in a "colony" most of my life and recently moved to a bit better area. I can tell you, his book is accurate. 7y

I finally got around to finishing this urgent, brilliantly argued book. I'm left thinking about all the times i've knowingly "pushed the button" of my own privilege, placing my sense of comfort over the safety and dignity of others. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, especially to other white folks who care about antiracism and want to destroy white supremacy.

This one was a bit slower for me to get through then The New Jim Crow, but it was an excellent follow-up read expounding on some of her points and adding some new insights to how that disparity in policing has evolved into us treating certain segments of our population as if they are a "Colony" of the United States within the larger "Nation", with less rights/privileges where any sign of disruption is meet with swift & severe pushback. It also...

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...covers up through more current events, including protests in Ferguson. Personally & by odd coincidence I was reading Michelle Alexander's book when Philando Castile was shot, & this one when the verdict came out, oddly the first near the part about "routine" bad taillight stops looking for problems, to this one near the small part talking about the self policing of the police themselves almost always resulting in acquittals. So odd, but timely. 7y

Why are we boycotting Columbus Day...we should be boycotting Thanksgiving!

This is like when you grow up and read the Grimm's Fairytale version of your favorite kids story, but worse, with the bloody version being the actual history.

TheNextBook We should be boycotting both. I read a book last year with my son about Thanksgiving. It spoke about a different event but went into detail about what happened later between the Native Americans and settlers. 7y

Hayes' title is a partial quote of Richard Nixon, one of the original law and order candidates. Beyond defining the nation and the colony, Hayes also defines the differences BETWEEN law and order. It's a potent and necessary discussion that I hope leads to a better understanding of punishment, justice, and who ultimately gets to decide what each means.

Very readable discussion of race in the US. Vignettes of police activity on college campuses, John Hancock's smuggling operation, "broken windows" policing and gun ownership make this a engaging but not overly academic read. The analogy of the colony in a nation is spot-on and uses historical references to show the progression of how race and white fear was used politically.

It's interesting in content and writing style. I encourage you to give it a shot no matter where you are politically. #readersresist

Notafraidofwords I really appreciated this one. I lived in the projects for a long time and can totally appreciate everything he was saying. In many ways, I felt like I was living two lives. My private life and my work life in a nice area. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Notafraidofwords I'm glad to have your perspective. Since I've basically always been in "The Nation," it's never easy for me to judge if a book feels on target to others with different experiences. Thanks! 7y
lynneamch Hell Yeah! 7y
Notafraidofwords @BarbaraTheBibliophage no problem. I have to say, he hits the nail in the head. Completely aligned with my experiences. One thing I wish he expanded on was colony shut down. For instance, when living in the projects, cops would shut down the streets. And that would hinder me going to work and school. But, how could I explain that to a supervisor who has always loved in a nation. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Notafraidofwords Wow. Yes, I've never been aware of Colony shut down. The expectation that people need to get to work is just ignored. Infuriating! 7y
