In the Tall Grass | Joe Hill, Stephen King
16 posts | 35 read | 39 to read
Mile 81 meets “N.” in this eBook collaboration between Stephen King and Joe Hill. As USA TODAY said of Stephen King’s Mile 81: “Park and scream. Could there be any better place to set a horror story than an abandoned rest stop?” In the Tall Grass begins with a sister and brother who pull off to the side of the road after hearing a young boy crying for help from beyond the tall grass. Within minutes they are disoriented, in deeper than seems possible, and they’ve lost one another. The boy’s cries are more and more desperate. What follows is a terrifying, entertaining, and masterfully told tale, as only Stephen King and Joe Hill can deliver.

Creepy story by King and his son, Joe Hill. The premise was great. Two people traveling cross-country hear a kid yelling for help. They venture into the tall grass to help him and then the scare factor increases as they find themselves separated and lost. Things go extremely dark at the end and a little off the rails, which is why this is a so-so pick for me. Apparently, it is currently being made into a movie too.

Addison_Reads @marleed That was probably a bit of a shock. 😁 1mo

Word of advice...if you plan on reading a quick novella before bedtime, maybe don't pick this up! That's me never sleeping again

I was recommended this by a friend. He said he couldn't get into it but I was looking for something....dark, non-fairytale, and grim. Sometimes the "Happily ever after" endings just get a bit mundane.
It is a novella, and indeed a quick read, but BOY WHAT A READ. It satisfied my dark, haunting hankering and this is a cautionary "Read at your own risk" book.

TheBookKeepers Sounds creeeeepy! Maybe I need to add this to a Halloween TBR list 😝 14mo
kellyann28 @TheBookKeepers Yes definitely! They are making a Netflix series out of it and I am kind of shocked due to what goes on in the book. Perfect for a Halloween read! 14mo

#KingAtoZ

I is For In the Tall Grass, a novella co-written with King‘s son. I love that he collaborates with his kids! I‘ve yet to read this one; is it good?

GarthRanzz This is a good, quick story. I think you‘d like it. Perfect choice. 😊 1y
Bookladylinda I listened to the audio, good but short 1y

I'm in a reading slump. When that happens I turn to my old faithful, King. It's like putting on a pair of my favorite jeans. Like going home, kinda~sorta. Probably not the best choice right before bed. 🤣

AmyG SK would pull anyone out of a slump! 2y
Ashley_Nicoletto I feel the exact same way. 2y

#stephenking17 #audiobooks

I've read all of King's novels. But I've found that audio is a good option for his novellas/short stories. In the Tall Grass, along with the others shown here, are tales just as chilling whether they're on the page or in your ears😱

The story was interesting but it didn't grab my attention compared to Stephen King's and Joe Hill's other works.

I had heard this about Joe Hill, apparently he wanted to try to make it on his own and he did, long before it was revealed that he was King's son. I've read most of his books and he's a tremendous writer. Two of my favorites are this one and Throttle, both novellas he wrote with his father.

TheBookAddict Have you read Horns? It's a good one! 3y
Onceuponatime I liked this story too. My favorite though is NOS4A2 3y
Sweettartlaura @Jenn1 Check this out! 3y

AE_Stueve He is a great writer, but if you see the guy in person and don't know he's King's son then your eyes might be broken. He's like a clone! 3y
KrisConstantReader @TheBookAddict yes, Horns, 20th Century Ghosts, Heart Shaped Box, NOS4A2 3y
Little_Reader @AE_Stueve That's exactly what I say! How could you not know he's Stephen King's offspring?! Look at him! 3y
KrisConstantReader @Little_Reader @AE_Stueve yeah but he started out quite a long time ago, he was much younger and looked different. 3y
LisaReads Wow! I did not know that!! Thanks for sharing! 3y
[DELETED] 3558467437 OMGsh! I didn't know! Good for him! 3y
KrisConstantReader His other son, Owen King, is also a great writer 3y
adverse @AE_Stueve I was about to say the same thing! I've known for a long time that Joe Hill was Stephen King's son...I find that Owen King looks more like his mother, Tabitha King. 3y
adverse Also, it's probably for the best that he uses a pen name. I doubt a lot of people would take an author with the name "Joe King" seriously. ? 3y

What started out sounding like a re-tread of Children of the Corn grew into its own terrifying tale of people getting lost in the great wide open of the heartland.

Just one thought kept irking me: why not try ripping the grass out??? Just try it, & tell me what happens.

Stephen King & Joe Hill ... How cool! The story was okay. A great concept, but the details were a bit muddied and unclear. Overall I liked it, but I would be hesitant to whom I recommend this to. 3/5.

acorter My thoughts exactly. 3y
