The Light We Lost
The Light We Lost | Jill Santopolo
He was the first person to inspire her, to move her, to truly understand her. Was he meant to be the last? Lucy is faced with a life-altering choice. But before she can make her decision, she must start her story their story at the very beginning. Lucy and Gabe meet as seniors at Columbia University on a day that changes both of their lives forever. Together, they decide they want their lives to mean something, to matter. When they meet again a year later, it seems fated perhaps they ll find life s meaning in each other. But then Gabe becomes a photojournalist assigned to the Middle East and Lucy pursues a career in New York. What follows is a thirteen-year journey of dreams, desires, jealousies, betrayals, and, ultimately, of love. Was it fate that brought them together? Is it choice that has kept them away? Their journey takes Lucy and Gabe continents apart, but never out of each other s hearts. Me Before You meets One Day in this devastatingly romantic debut novel about the enduring power of first love, with a shocking, unforgettable ending. A Love Story for a new generation."

Lucy and Gabe are soulmates, who share the tragedy of witnessing 9/11 together. They experience a first, electrifying love, but their career paths separate them geographically. Star-crossed lovers? Fate?Choice? Gabe goes to photograph the war torn Middle East while Lucy eventually remains in NYC & marries. The thread that binds them is sporadic, fragile, but never quite broken. This book is Lucy‘s goodbye to Gabe.

Cinfhen I really liked this book a lot!!!! Great choice 🖤 2w

Eh. This was just okay. I couldn‘t really connect with Lucy, and found all of them to be selfish. Because of this I didn‘t feel invested, and in turn did not find it emotional (and I love a good tearjerker).

Captivating narrative. Loved the reality of Lucy's perspective on motherhood and societal expectations. The analogy of relationships like different types of fire is 🔥. Trigger warning: 9/11 descriptions. (Audio)

Picked this from a Little Free Library. Growing up on Bollywood films, I found this not to be an epic love story. Lucy Carter narrates her relationship with her first love, Gabriel Samson and her later marriage with Darren Maxwell. The novel focuses on the different kinds of romantic love, the road not taken and what if, balancing a family and a career, the small and large things that make/break a relationship, followed over 13 years from 9/11.

I loved this book so much and couldn‘t put it down. I only wish the ending didn‘t leave so many questions and I felt like some parts of the book went on too long and could have been shortened. I knew early on how it would end but wasn‘t expecting the pregnancy twist. This is the second book I‘ve read from this author and I will definitely look for her new books to read in the future.

The most heart breaking book I've read in a long time. Although I enjoyed the flowing writing style, the past tense addressed direction irked me. I'm not a big fan of contemporary as I tend to get bored but some parts of this book were major tear jerkers. I would have liked a bit more of a conclusion but I guess that's part of the appeal of the story. 3/5 stars..

I am a ridiculously slow reader and managed to finish the 2nd half this morning before book club. The characters and relationships had a lot of layers to them and their faults were just a strong as their qualities. Santopolo has written children and young adult books, this is her first adult and I really enjoyed it!

Loving you was young, and wild, and free
Loving you was cool, and hot, and sweet
Loving you was sunshine, safe and sound
A steady place to let down my defenses
But loving you had consequences🎶♥️

This reminds me of the devastatingly romantic relationship between Gabe and Lucy, whose love survives through marriage, betrayals, careers and living continents apart. #consequences #amonthofsongs

It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a book that I couldn‘t put down. This was a captivating, twisting love story that had me staying up until late into the night to see what happened next. Spanning across decades, this author has shared a true epic and one that speaks to universal themes of love and loss. P.S. if you need something for book club, I‘d recommend this one!

This audiobook kept me coming back for more! However, Darren pissed me off. His expectation that the mom takes care of the kids, that he kept Lucy out of the big decisions/surprises of her life, and that he was patronizing about her working and her career path in general. Ugh. Lucy also upset me because of her lack of communication. Really? Can‘t talk to your husband about thinking he‘s cheating? Boo. Still enjoyable fiction.

Wow, I read this book up. I absolutely loved it. As I was reading I had a feeling it was going to end the way it did so it didn't shock me. But I felt a strong connection to this book. Not only because the protagonist's birthday is my own birthday but because the last part of the book takes places in Jerusalem, the city I was born in, in the country I hold near and dear to my heart.

The story was well written. I understood Lucy - I think these wandering thoughts about who are you and who you should be with are normal and important. I understand why she wanted to choose a dog, going to Paris, buying a new home and having someone support your work. It seemed like the ‘right‘ choice to go along with a partner who will take care of you, though, and I don‘t think that‘s true. 3/5 because I don‘t fully agree with her choices.
