One of children's literature's most memorable characters returns in this Christmastime companion to the Newbery Medal-winning A Year Down Yonder and Newbery Honor-winning A Long Way from Chicago. The eccentric, larger-than-life Grandma Dowdel is back in this heart-warming tale. Set 20 years after the events of A Year Down Yonder, it is now 1958 and a new family has moved in next door: a Methodist minister and his wife and kids. Soon Grandma Dowdel will work her particular brand of charm on all of them: ten-year-old Bob Barnhart, who is shy on courage in a town full of bullies; his two fascinating sisters; and even his parents, who are amazed to discover that the last house in town might also be the most vital. As Christmas rolls around, the Barnhart family realizes that theyve found a true home, and a neighbor who gives gifts that will last a lifetime.Pitch-perfect prose, laced with humor and poignancy, strong characterization and a clear development of the theme of gifts one person can offer make this one of Pecks best novels yetand thats saying something.Kirkus (starred review)The type of down-home humor and vibrant characterizations Peck fans have come to adore re-emerge in full.Publishers Weekly (starred review)With a storyteller's sure tone, Peck has once again created a whole world in one small Illinois town, a place where the folksy wisdom and generosity of one gruff old woman can change lives.School Library Journal (starred review)Publishers Weekly Best Books of the YearKirkus Reviews Best Books of the YearBooklist Editors Choice

So I‘ve learned a few things about my holiday reading pet peeves: I don‘t really like unrealistic romances and I DO NOT like stories that appear to be about Christmas/the holidays that in fact are not. Less than an hour of this audiobook - the last hour - has anything to do with Christmas. The story was ok, nostalgic for sure, but it was not what I was wanting. 🌟🌟🌟 #mistletoemaniacs #wintergames2021

I always enjoy Richard Peck's books with Grandma Dowdel 💙 I just read he passed in 2018 so there will be no more.

@NataliePatalie

LibrarianRyan I love his books too. This series takes place around where I live. He was born and lived in the next town over. 3y

Okay, seemed like it didn‘t end satisfactorily, but the I saw it‘s a companion to a series of books, so it might be better if you read the whole series. #holidayreads #wintergames #tmskellington @Crimson613 @StayCurious @Clwojick

tdrosebud Home. I live a couple of hours away from family but usually work Christmas so I don't see them. I'm lucky enough that this year I don't have to work, so I get my wish. 4y
sblbooks Hawaii: Mele kaliki maca 🌊🎄 I'm not sure if I spelled that right, haha. 4y
Nessavamusic I would love to go to Germany for Christmas someday! 4y
Marina_h Austria or Switzerland! I would love to spent Christmas in mountains with lots of snow and just hubby and me in a cottage 🎅⛄🎄 4y
madamereadsalot1 New York City or Dublin. They both do Christmas up. 4y
Jen_Reads I‘d love to go to Germany or one a little town that looks right out of a Hallmark movie 4y
Kappadeemom Switzerland sounds awesome @Marina_h 4y
Kappadeemom I would go where there is lots of snow and cold since I live where it‘s warm during the holidays. Maybe Whistler. 4y
bullbunny It already snows enough where I live. But I would love to see some shows in New York or experience a Christmas where it doesn't snow for a change. Like Hawaii 4y
Laughterhp I‘d want to go somewhere warm and tropical where I wouldn‘t have to deal with snow, probably Hawaii. Or the complete opposite and visit somewhere that‘s in Europe and goes all out for Christmas! 4y
LibrarianRyan @jessinikkip Ahhhh. Since we are a military family we rarely did Christmas with the family. We do Christmas eve when we are around. I'm a little jelly. 4y
LibrarianRyan @tdrosebud I get that. Josh normally has to work Christmas. He works nights but that means he has to sleep during the day. this is the first time since we have been together that he gets Christmas off. 4y
LibrarianRyan Place holder. All points above this line accounted for. 4y
LibrarianRyan @Insightsintobooks that could be fun. +6 4y

2009, historical fiction. Takes place in 1958 where a new family moves in next to a Mrs. Dowdel. They desperately need her help- one of the boys is shy and gets bullied, one of the older sisters is on the verge of spinning out, and the little sister is waiting for a role model. The dad is a minister and the mother stays at home.

Many of Richard Peck's books take place near me. Exactly where is never mentioned but they do talk about all the little towns around me. I think it's probably Decatur Illinois or one of the small surrounding towns since that is where the author is from. #takesplacenearme #spookyoctober
