A Newbery Medal Winner Richard Peck's Newbery Medal-winning sequel to A Long Way from Chicago Mary Alice's childhood summers in Grandma Dowdel's sleepy Illinois town were packed with enough drama to fill the double bill of any picture show. But now she is fifteen, and faces a whole long year with Grandma, a woman well known for shaking up her neighbors-and everyone else! All Mary Alice can know for certain is this: when trying to predict how life with Grandma might turn out . . . better not. This wry, delightful sequel to the Newbery Honor Book A Long Way from Chicago has already taken its place among the classics of children's literature. "Hilarious and poignant." A Year Down Yonder is an HF book written by Richard Peck. This book is classic children‘s literature, and it won the Newbery Medal. Mary Alice is the main character and the book tells the story of her relationship with her grandma. Mary Alice does not like spending summers with her grandma because she is always scheming. Read and scheme along with Mary Alice and her grandma to see how their relationship changes in an unexpected way #ucflae3414su20

JessicaO Teachers can use this book for IR. Below is a link to a scholastic lesson plan that has students write a letter about a new place or situation they have been in. Then another student will write back as a mom. This is great for UDL3.1 to activate or supply background knowledge. Also, for ELL standard#4 to link lesson topic to student‘s prior knowledge. Students get to relate this book to their personal lives, which is great for deeper understanding (edited) 4y
DrSpalding I read this book when it won the award. I enjoyed it and the sequel. I agree that students can make text to self connection with books like these. This could be an excellent option for literature circles. Your extension activity, writing a letter, is a good one! 4y

Mary Alice remembers being 15 and sent to live with her grandmother in the country. Her dad is out of work and her Grandma Dowdell has room. Prior to this Mary Alice has only ever visited with her brother for summer visits. Now it's a whole year and grandma is a character. From swiping food from others' land to tricking neighborhood tricksters to helping some that no other people in town will help, Grandma's on top of everything. #NewberyChallenge

Tanisha_A Ooh, I like the sound of it. Grandma Robin Hood! 👌 6y

Testing day in my classroom. I read a page, I walk around the classroom to make sure everyone‘s okay. I hate testing.

youngreadrshelf @toofondofbooks I‘ve read one of the others. And I remember liking it. I love the grandmother in this one. 6y
youngreadrshelf @JoScho testing = worst week ever for me. So boring. The kids don‘t mind because it‘s a novelty for them and we have good snacks and some added recess time. 6y
Peddler410 Only one day!? In the last three weeks students in my school have spent NINE days testing! Six for PARCC and another three for MAP. 6y
youngreadrshelf @Peddler410 no, it‘s 4 days. Monday thru Thursday. Montessori schools typically don‘t test, we do for when kids head into the public system. 6y

12. Richard Peck wrote the HF book called A Year Down Yonder that won the Newbery Award. It is a great book for a GR in the classroom so you can help students break apart the book. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/year-down-yond... has some lesson plans for the book. UDL: 7.1- optimize individual choice and autonomy, EL: use language experience techniques in discussing concepts and ideas. #UCFLAE3414F17

DrSpalding Several of your posts need a bit more in regards to a summary. Tell more regarding what the book was about. 6y

This HF story is a great LC Newbury Award winner! A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck, takes place in Chicago proceeding the Great Depression in 1937. As 15 year old Mary Alice's parents struggle to regain their financial stability, she is sent to live with her no nonsense Grandma in Southern IL. The year ahead brings many unexpected surprises and leaves Mary Alice with a more tender-hearted view of life in the country as well as for her Grandma.

JanaLL https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/year-down-yond... This extension activity idea allows students to put themselves in Mary Alice's shoes and write a diary entry on how they would've reacted to the news of being sent away from their family to a Grandma that even there mother fears. 6y
JanaLL EL 4 - link lesson topic to students' prior knowledge. UDL 8.4 - Increase mastery-oriented feedback. 6y

DrSpalding Jana, it is as if you raided my office library. Excellent choices! I like the idea of students writing a diary entry. I have read both books in the series. 6y

4⭐️Richard Peck almost always makes my heart happy. While this is a sequel to A Long Way From Chicago, it can be read as a stand alone. One of the things that really gets me about this series is that it is literally right in my backyard. I just spent 8 years in Mattoon, live close to Piatt county, and know of the landmarks mentioned. I love that he never actually names a town, just gives an idea of where it is located.

Okay all, I live "down yonder". Peck grew up in decatur and while his books never mention the exact place they are set it, all the surrounding towns are listed in his books somewhere. #readjanuary #setinmycity

These books are set in a small town. You don't know which town, they never say. However they mention the surrounding towns frequently and puts it right in my neck of the woods. Heck this book could even be set in my town. They are wonderful stories of growing up. #photodaynov16 #smalltowns
