Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics | Daniel James Brown
The #1 "New York Times" bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany For readers of "Unbroken," out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant. It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man s personal quest."

I have to say it‘s not my type of book I find it boring no action. The first chapter was snoozing and I thought it was just cause it was the first chapter but the whole book is making me fall asleep. The book might be interesting for someone else just not me so I am bailing out.

Believe the hype - this book is great. I listened to the audio and actually continued listening without multitasking a few times because Brown was so great at creating suspense behind races that…I already knew the outcome of. 🤷🏻‍♀️ A vividly told story of a team of underdogs weathering the Great Depression and surprising the world with their grit and determination. Loved it.

marleed I have so much respect for rowers as athletes after reading this. Also, so interesting what it was like to be a college athlete back in the day. 9mo

Never thought I‘d ever read about the Gold Medal winning rowing team in the 1936 Olympics. Heard about this on the FABULOUS podcast “What Should I Read Next?” The way the author describes the races makes you feel like you‘re witnessing the race. Well developed characters and excellent information about everything to do with rowing success- inspiring and exciting .

Amoon I read somewhere that there‘s a documentary on PBS about the Olympic rowing team 1y

Why did I wait so long to read this?! This is the fascinating story of the 1936 Olympic rowing team. The author does a wonderful job of incorporating details from the time period and the story of one particular rower, Joe Rantz. The book also describes Germany and its preparations for the Olympics. I am not a fan of sports books, but I am a fan of history. The audiobook narrator does an excellent job.

Really good account of of 9 American rowers from the Seattle area who come together and eventually make it to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Very inspiring story about relationships and teamwork and effort. Some sad parts about the Great Depression in America and how one of them was abandoned by his family at a young age. Very worthwhile reading along the lines of Seabiscuit, etc.

🎧 This was exactly the right book for me right now: A story about underdogs, hope and a perfect golden moment in time. It‘s the narrative NF account of the University of Washington crew (8-man rowing) that went to the 1936 “Nazi” Olympics. Wish I had read it though as the narrator mispronounced a few names (“Oregon” and “Thula” most notably) but still, great story! If you like ‘Seabiscuit‘ and ‘Unbroken‘ you will probably like this one too!

Bradleygirl I love this one so much and keep trying to get my family bookworms to read it 2y

I have a newfound respect for rowing and the athletic prowess required for a team to compete. The popularity of this sport in the early 1900s is fascinating. ...Also, a great read for #Washington State.

Based on the novel The Boys in the boat, the American Experience on PBS was very well done. They're we're interviews and archival footage.

What I liked best about the book: information about the depression era of the Pacific North West, pictures included in the book, extraordinary detail by the author, getting to know the lives of the boys outside of rowing, and interweaving of the looming war in Germany. It took me a while to get into this book and sometimes my interest waxed and waned but overall I enjoyed the book. The last 25% was my favorite part and I liked how the book ended.

The Boys in the Boat, is a Washington State Book Award winner. The NF book follows nine boys on their journey to rowing for gold. Set in the Great Depression the boys are working toward the 1936 Olympics. This book would be great for a LC in higher grade levels. #ucflae3414su19

I don‘t care at all about sports or rowing, but I loved this book! I saw some people on here said they skipped the descriptions of the races, so I was expecting them to be super long and tedious to read, but actually I felt that reading about the races really helped illustrate the chemistry that developed between these athletes. As a professional musician, I was continually struck by how much elite rowing is like performing chamber music.
