I really enjoyed this book. It has mixed reviews here, I understand why though. It was a little slow starting off but it was so easy to become invested in the characters. I felt like I knew them and grew to like them by the end of the book. The goings on in a “old folks home” in Amsterdam isn‘t comedic gold, but Groen is charmingly witty. Book 24 of 2019

BookishMeanderings I really enjoyed this one too 1mo

I‘ve been sitting at the hospital for a few hours, waiting to pick up a friend from surgery. I wasn‘t impressed with the last memoir book I read (it was quite raunchy) and this one started slow but I‘m really enjoying it!!!

This had been better had I not expected something really funny. It's poignant and sad and quite brilliant, though. And Derek Jacobi reads the audio, so it has that going for it as well. #audiowalk #litsywalkers

I‘ve been chipping away at this book for a long time now. I REALLY wanted to like it . If you put it on an EKG machine, it‘d get a straight line ————————————————————It‘s supposed to be funny , but it‘s not. It‘s about a grumpy old guy in an old folks home. The author tries to add tidbits here and there to make it more appealing, but reading the book is about as exciting as living in a nursing home would be. And now there‘s a sequel. 😱 2.5 🌟

CouronneDhiver 😂😂😂 Oh, the snark! I love these kinds of reviews 3mo

Kaye @CouronneDhiver @Suet624 @Leftcoastzen I REALLY wanted to like this and thought I would. I usually like books about grumpy old people. It wasn‘t bad ........ I honestly think it might be a sense of humor thing. It‘s the same with OVE. Cannot force myself past a chapter or 2. I think it‘s supposed to have funny parts. Maybe somebody from Hillbilly village doesn‘t understand that humor ? And they might not understand ours. 3mo
Leftcoastzen I saw the movie of Ove and liked it .But didn‘t read the book , not very Litsy like in this case I guess. 3mo
gradcat Great review...I love the flatline image! I‘ve missed you, too, so just want to say hello. Somehow I have missed your posts...bad timing, I guess. Hope you are well and still walking 🚶‍♀️! 3mo
Kaye Thank you @gradcat. It‘s great to see you too. 💕. I haven‘t been posting a lot lately so it‘d be easy to miss my posts. Been a rough walking week but I did make it to the gym today so maybe I‘m back in business. 3mo
gradcat @kaye Here‘s to you getting back into it! I‘m doing better with mine as well. I hope we can both keep on keeping on...walking, that is. ❤️ 3mo
SailorMoon A friend of mine steongly suggested it... I'm not sure though, especially after reading your review... I'll think about it 😉 3mo
Kaye @SailorMoon It‘s not a bad book nor bad writing. I just found it tedious. It was supposed to be funny but it wasn‘t really. Maybe mildly Funny ? It was just a so so sorta book. Not awful but not what I was hoping for. Others might really like it though. Good luck ! 3mo

Finished this one up last night... and despite the Litsy love for this one I'm only giving it a "so-so". Hendrik is a fun narrator, but amid the occasional LOL moments I found this book to be a bit boring. I didn't expect much in the way of plot... but I did expect more in the way of heart.
For those that intend to read this: perhaps consider reading it daily (as the format is dated journal entries), and live the story through a whole year.

A little over a third finished with this one... It's enjoyable but somehow very... slow? It's got it's moments but I must admit that I've considered bailing on it. It's got a lot of Litsy love - so I'm gonna stick with it for now!

Funny, of course, as cantankerous old man novels tend to be, but very straightforward about the issues we all will confront as we age. I, for one, will be getting a mobility scooter.

I had heard this book was great for people who loved “A Man Called Ove”. I am one of those people. However, while some obvious parallels are there, I don‘t think this was anywhere close to as good. While I did grow attached to Hendrik and his friends, they are lovely, endearing characters, there was just so much sadness. I didn‘t feel uplifted by this book (even though it tries to end on an uplifting note).. I felt discouraged.

Um... what did I just read? And why are people reading this..?

This seems to be a diary of a person in an elderly home - with no plot and no point to deliver. I made myself read to see if there's some moral that is coming up, at least, but... nope. Nothing. You could publish this right now. Your cousin could. All it seems to be is a commentary of 2015, but it's several years old now and you won't be able to relate.

While the blurb leads you to think this is another in the "loveable curmudgeon" set, it's actually deeply beautiful and relatable. Hendrik's self-deprecating style pokes fun at himself as well as the foibles of the residents of his aged care home. It also examines what makes life worthwhile even in the face of illness and death. And OK, sometimes he does get a bit grumpy, curmudgeonly even ... but so do we all. Highly recommend.

At first, I found the described atmosphere of the retirement home depressing, as it so clearly described the rehab center where my mom recently stayed for 2 weeks after hip surgery, right down to the passive-aggressive management! But as Hendrik took charge of his own experience, joy and light began to suffuse the story. It is wonderfully narrated by Derek Jacobi in the audio version! #ReadingAroundTheWorld #Netherlands

Finished the audiobook this morning and I miss Hendrick already. He chronicles a year in the life of an old person‘s home in Amsterdam from finding new reasons to be active through the “old but not dead club” to his observations on the petty behaviors of his fellow inmates Hendrik is a delight! Pictured here next to a photo of my Grandfather who was very similar in attitude! ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 I recommend the audiobook wonderfully read by Sir Derek Jacobi!

BookNAround I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I do have a rather soft spot for rumply old men. 😊 2y

#TBRtemptation post 3! The story of an elderly lovable curmudgeon. Hendrik lives at a Dutch nursing home. Residents and staff always clash. Then Eefje moves in, his dream girl. He spruces up and starts the Old But Not Yet Dead Club with others to support them through their struggles. They go on trips and have fun. Sorrow and comedy intermix for an excellent focus on elderly care. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

#catchingup on #anditsaugust #day21 - #seniorcitizens

Sounds a bit like that one plot from Cloud Atlas; I'm assuming "elderly in revolt" is sort of its own subgenre.

On a more substantial note, I apparently got a credit expansion on my card recently, probably due to my purchasing a car (mental not, get that payment in the mail). Won't say this new resource'll expand my book-buying prospects; I've got enough to still pay off as it is.
