I am delighted and grateful to officially present Ying! Special thanks to Cleo Li-Schwartz for her editing and guidance. And to Dali Wu herself for her brilliant, beautiful paintings which brought this vision to life. And for the translation (coming soon!) to honor the influences and peoples who have inspired much of the book. I thoroughly enjoyed creating this tiny tale, and I hope that all who read the story of Ying will enjoy it as well!

llcoolnate Ying presents a delightful and lighthearted collection of sketches that combine color and traditional mica pigments. These artworks portray a small life filled with laughter and surrounded by the care of nature in the beautiful landscapes of Yunnan and Guizhou. Fall into the fantasy of communicating and adventuring with animals, as Ying introduces us to the beginnings of a girl‘s friendships and some valuable lessons learned along the way! 4mo

Read this before re-watching the film. A very interesting way to have a movie develop (created by director and author) before having a novel to follow. Very enjoyable read though, and currently enjoying the sequel!

Mehso-so

Very educational on the types of narcissists in the world (which we seem to encounter rather constantly) and potential influences that steered them into that personality disorder. However, not much useful advice is included within (outside of the age-old “distancing yourself“ and “setting boundaries“).

llcoolnate Normally I wouldn't let this push the dial to a “so-so“ rating, but many times throughout Ettensohn would explain that this book is for those who are looking for useful tactics outside of creating distance between yourself and loved ones. And outside of trying to have empathy, understanding where they're coming from, etc. it falls a bit short. 9mo
mandarchy Narcissism is interesting. It could be a component of addiction or mental illness. If you need help dealing with someone, I can't recommend NAMI enough. They have classes for helping you, not necessarily them. If you don't want the classes, look at their resource list for reading suggestions. I no longer believe that it's as simple as pushing people away. It's counterintuitive to push away if we truly want to prevent the worst (suicide). 9mo
llcoolnate @mandarchy yeah it's a tricky one. An all-consuming disease if you let it be. I'l need to check out their resources! Suicide is a tricky one because it's very commonly used as a weapon to control. Very tricky one. Thanks! 9mo

Pros:
• Excellent introduction to core concepts of hedge funds and private equity, terminology, and examples of various financial instruments.
• An easy enough read (even considering the cons)

Cons:
• Riddled...plagued with missing words, grammatical errors, etc.
• Though not imperative to understanding the material, the graphs and images are so small as to be absolutely useless.

Still, overall a pick for the HF and PE novice.

wasn't expecting much so I wasn't disappointed much. should have a title that explains it written to the faux-alpha fan base (lift weights, eat a lot of meat, don't listen to crazy vegans, and yada yada). very intro-level but still misses the mark even for intro. hard topic to master so I wasn't terrible shocked.

MsMelissa Totally agree! While I did manage to make it through this one, I failed at my attempts to read The Fellowship of the Ring. The movies are great though 😂 3y
llcoolnate @MsMelissa oh good I'm glad i wasn't alone. When something is hailed as great as the LOTR series, I feel like any critic of it is taken poorly haha. I definitely wanted to like it...just let me down. 3y

SayersLover This one is really meant to be a read-aloud. That‘s why J R R came up with it, based on bedtime stories for his son. I was lucky, cause my dad read it to me. 😃 @llcoolnate 3y
llcoolnate @SayersLover I had to bail and switched to audio book to finish out. It was definitely better that way. And at 2x speed hahaha. Maybe not my style is all. I definitely couldn't have come up with that 4-book (or 2 big-book) epic, so I definitely have respect for the work and the author! 3y
bthegood I'll be honest....I've never read the books or seen the movies....so no fussing here😊 3y
llcoolnate @bthegood haha well good! Haha I've read The Hobbit only. The book was okay but the movie series was one of the worst I've ever seen haha. The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy was good to me, but I've never read the book(s) 3y

llcoolnate Audio booked this one and it may have been a bad choice. No disrespect to his wife, but what a poor choice to have her narrate. Oh man. Otherwise the story itself was okay, but rather self-agrandizing. Still getting through it, but this dude was hungry for some “barely legal“ business when he wrote this one....christ....

JanuarieTimewalker13 Can you explain? I read this a while back...maybe a year and half ago, I remember the house, and I liked the book, but what do you mean? 3y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 lol undertones when he meets her, leading to thoughts, then a graphic sex dream, then eventual outward sexual conversations (disregarding how silly and unrealisticallyit was presented lol)-- and that's all I've read so far. Decent chunk left, so I'm sure there's more too be had. 3y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 horror is one of my favorite, if not my favorite genres. And yet how annoyed cheap sex scenes, goofy horny writing, and teenage-boy fantasy writing gets me makes me like..not the ideal candidate for horror. Hahaha. Just makes a book all that much better when the author isn't super horny and/or pandering lolil 3y
See All 13 Comments
JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh geez, I don‘t remember any of this. Was it his wife you‘re talking about? Didn‘t she die suddenly. Something about coming out of a drug store? 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh wait!! There was a younger woman with a child, is that who you‘re taking about? 3y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 yeah the young mother who he speaks in long sentences about her nipples and how she'd be in bed and how young she is and how shes only had slept with 1 other person but she wants him and on and on and on lolol. I like some King stuff, but some is weak and seems to be propped by the name. I still haven't read The Stand or Salems lot so I'm really hopeful there. 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 You know what, there are men like that, it‘s creepy, I know. When I was younger and an older man would check me out, It made me pissed off. I haven‘t read The Stand yet. I read ‘Salem‘s Lot and I loved it. I still think my faves (thus far) are 11/22/63 and The Institute. (edited) 3y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 I need to check out the Institute. I really liked Misery and The Shining, so I'm not writing him off. And there are definitely men like that out there....but in this story it's supposed to be endearing..and it's odd, and creepy. I just get picky and when someone writes from the perspective of a writer with writer's block I find it lazy. When I think they're writing their own fantasies..weird. 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 If you are going to read The Regulators and Desperation (companion novels/duology(sort of)), read Rose Madder first. Someone said that on Reddit. A character named Cynthia has her back story in RM. I didn‘t know that and I‘m almost done with D. Cynthia is a great character. 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I liked The Shining. I own Doctor Sleep but haven‘t read it yet. I prefer his paranormal and psychic stuff. That‘s why I loved The Institute. I‘m guessing Doctor Sleep has a lot of it bc it‘s the follow up on Danny. 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I think King wants to make you uncomfortable. I think he wants you to know this is what‘s going on in some people‘s‘ minds. He has taught me so much. I wish I had read him as a teenager 3y
llcoolnate @JanuarieTimewalker13 I'll grab Rose Madder then!! Thanks! 3y

llcoolnate @Bigcountry15 oh good I need a redemption King book. Under the Dome, From a Buick 8, and the like were killin me hahaha 4y
bthegood @llcoolnate his short story The Reach is good, not a horror story, although I like his horror, it is a story that stayed with me. 4y
llcoolnate @Reggie yeah I'm 100% against the concept of an author writing from the perspective of an author with writer's block and forming a story based on life in his actual home town...and all that. Idk. As a multi-millionaire, best-selling, "king of horror", that concept seems really lazy at the very least. But who knows! Pluggin along with an open mind. 4y
llcoolnate @bthegood I'll need to check it out! 4y
wanderinglynn I read some of his non-horror books: The Body (the book the movie Stand By Me was based on) & The Gunslinger when I was much younger and liked them. The Turn of the Screw | Henry James
post image
Panpan

Evidence that “classic“ has no bearing on value. No, Henry James isn't “too smart“ for some readers. Don't let that drag you in. Minimal story and maximum wordage. A pan for me, but may be a pick for the more pedophilic-minded.

LitStephanie Pedophilic? The Turn of the Screw? I remember thinking it was well written but weird. It's good that you bailed--no sense in wasting your time on a book you don't like just because it's a classic! 4y
llcoolnate @LitStephanie yeah it was pedo trash and nonsensical, but that's my opinion ahahah. should have bailed but didn't. It was short enough since it was a novella that I powered through. I've bailed on like 3 of my last 5 and I wanted to stop that streak. Haha. 4y
LitStephanie Oops, I read the symbol wrong. It is short. I try to take James in his historical context to not get irritated by the sexism. I think he sympathizes with the plight of a young governess with no real prospects, what with the limitations society places on her, but I also feel he wouldn't write a male character in a similar situation to be so darn mentally frail and subject to flights of fancy. 4y

llcoolnate @LitStephanie true. Sexism can be hard to parse in old literature. Pedophilia perhaps gets less of an passable understanding from me 4y
Sparklemn I thought it was creepy...and not in a good way. Only finished because it was a short listen. 4y

“Everything we get, outside of the free gifts of nature, must in some way be paid for. The world is full of so- called economists who in turn are full of schemes for getting something for nothing. They tell us that the government can spend and spend without taxing at all; that it can continue to pile up debt without ever paying it off, because 'we owe it to ourselves.' “

“There are men regarded today as brilliant economists, who deprecate saving and recommend squandering on a national scale as the way of economic salvation; and when anyone points to what the consequences of these policies will be in the long run, they reply flippantly, as might the prodigal son of a warning father: “In the long run we are all dead.“ And such shallow wisecracks pass as devastating epigrams and the ripest wisdom.”
