Private Enquiry agent Cyrus Barker, along with his partner Thomas Llewelyn, has a long, accomplished history - he's taken on cases for Scotland Yard, the Foreign Office, and even the crown itself, fulfilling them all with great skill and discretion.

EadieB None of those cases, however, are as delicate and complicated as the one laid before him by a delegation of men who, thirty years before, fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. These men want to revive the Confederacy with a warship promised to the Rebels from the British Government in 1865. 52m
EadieB To get it now, they're threatening to reveal the long-secret treaty with the Confederacy. Barker is hired to use his connections to discreetly bring their threats to the Prime Minister.
With a web of prominent, if secret, supporters throughout England ready to through their support to their efforts to wage war anew on the United States, the delegates are just waiting for the warship to begin their plans.
51m
EadieB But some of the men are not who they claim to be, and the American government has their own team watching, and waiting, for the right moment to take action.
As this fuse on this powder keg of a situation grows ever shorter, it's up to Barker & Llewelyn to uncover the real identities and plans of these dangerous men.
This is the first book of the Barker & Llewelyn series that I have read.

EadieB It has made me want to go back and read the whole series. It has showed us a relationship between the U.S. and Britain where a ship was bought by the Confederacy but never delivered because of the end of the Civil War. I now look forward to reading the series in order. If you love mysteries about U.S. and Britain relationships then you will love this book. 49m

She walked through the cabin, across the gleaming hardwood floor, past the beautiful fireplace and luxury kitchen. The view overlooking the lake was breathtaking until she stepped outside and saw the lifeless body in the chair – a silk scarf wrapped tightly around his throat, his gray eyes wide open.

EadieB FBI Agent Susan Parker‘s fun afternoon go-karting with her daughter is interrupted when she‘s called to the crime scene of a wealthy local man murdered in his home.
As she delves into his life, she discovers the man belonged to an exclusive yet sinister Murder Club obsessed with the mysterious ‘Clothesline killer.‘
1d
EadieB The previous victims were all single mothers being investigated for suspected neglect who bore the same chilling hallmark – each was strangled in her bed at night by a masked figure.
But the Murder Club aren‘t the only ones who have been tracking his every move…
A local pizza delivery girl has been closely following the cases and building her own investigative report.
1d
EadieB Though dismissed as isolated crimes before, Susan unravels a shocking trail of clues from the girl‘s scrapbook that lead to the forgotten women and orphaned children left in the killer‘s wake.
Then another member of the club is found dead in his ranch house.

EadieB Determined to silence those who get in his way, and with his sights now set on Susan, can she stop him before she and her family fall prey to this elusive killer?
This is a fast-paced story with some good twists and a good plot. The characters were likable and the author had a great writing style. The captivating story was hard to put down until the very end of the book and the bad guy finally got the punishment that he deserved.

The newspapers called us the Seven Wonders. We were a group of friends, that‘s all, and then Toby died. Was killed. Murdered.
1905. A decade after the grisly murder of Oxford student Toby Feynsham, the case remains hauntingly unsolved.

EadieB As Jem grows closer to uncovering what happened that night, his pursuer grows bolder, making increasingly terrifying attempts to silence him for good. Will exposing Toby's killer put to rest the shadows that have darkened Jem‘s life for so long? Or will the gruesome truth only put him in more danger?
Some secrets are better left buried…
This book is not like the other books that K.J. Charles has written.
3d
EadieB It has a historical mystery and no romance. It is 10 years since the unsolved mystery of Toby‘s death and the police have not been contacted. Jem is calling them together in order to figure out the crime. I loved this book and what it does to all the members when the murderer is announced. Read it for yourself and see if you can figure out who did kill Toby and why. If you love mysteries that are unsolvable then you will love this book. 3d

#TheLadyWithTheDarkHair #ErinBartels #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove2024

Esther Markstrom and her artist mother have always been proud of their ancestor, painter Francisco Vella. They even run a small museum and gallery dedicated to raising awareness of his scandalously underappreciated work.

EadieB But when Esther reconnects with her former art history professor, she finds her once-solid family history on shaky ground as questions arise about Vella's greatest work--a portrait entitled The Lady with the Dark Hair .
In 1879, Catalan orphan-turned-fugitive Viviana Torrens has found sanctuary serving in the home of an aging artist in Southern France.
6d
EadieB It is in his studio that she meets Francisco Vella, a Gibraltarian merchant who sells artists' pigments. When her past catches up to her, she is compelled to pose as Vella's sister and join him on his travels or be deported back to Spain to stand trial. Along the way she will discover that the many parts she has been playing in order to hide her identity have far-reaching implications she never could have foreseen. 6d

This dual-timeline story from award-winning author Erin Bartels takes readers from the sleepy Midwest to the sultry Mediterranean on a relentless search for truth, identity, and the freedom to follow one's dreams.
I have read every book that Erin Bartels has written and have found them all different but very well written.

When Juan Cabrillo fails to capture the leader of Mexico‘s most dangerous drug cartel and loses an Oregon crew member in the process, he‘s determined to get revenge. Little does he know that the explosion he just narrowly escaped was merely the latest flash of violence from a machine of war that has existed for decades, dating from the bloodiest episode in Armenia‘s history.

EadieB Cabrillo‘s Corporation of mercenaries may have finally met its match in The Pipeline—a criminal syndicate passed down from father to son across generations. A group that sits with its finger on the trigger of a torpedo so deadly it could level entire cities. With millions of innocent civilians hanging in the balance, the Oregon‘s crew must unravel a tangle of drug-smuggling routes 6d
EadieB and international conspiracies spanning from the Aegean Sea to the Indian Ocean, putting their lives on the line to find the weapon before its countdown hits zero.
This was a good book but a bit different spin than the other books in the Oregon files. It was written by Mike Maden but not with Clive Cussler. This changed the whole voice of the novel and I found it a bit distracting while reading the book.
6d
EadieB The characters of the crew did not work together and I did miss this in the book. Hopefully Mike Maden will correct this in his next writing of the book. I think the books should be a bit consistent with the other books as this book feels like a different series. I realize that it must be difficult to write a book following the author‘s death but feel like it‘s important to get it right or start a new series. 6d

The Plot | Jean Hanff Korelitz
post image
Pickpick

#MarvellousMarch2024 #ThePlot #JeanHanffKorelitz #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove2024

Jean Hanff Korelitz‘s The Plot is a psychologically suspenseful novel about a story too good not to steal, and the writer who steals it. Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book.

EadieB Today, he‘s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what‘s left of his self-respect; he hasn‘t written—let alone published—anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn‘t need Jake‘s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, 3w
EadieB Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then . . . he hears the plot. Jake returns to the downward trajectory of his own career and braces himself for the supernova publication of Evan Parker‘s first novel: but it never comes. When he discovers that his former student has died, presumably without ever completing his book, 3w
EadieB Jake does what any self-respecting writer would do with a story like that—a story that absolutely needs to be told. In a few short years, all of Evan Parker‘s predictions have come true, but Jake is the author enjoying the wave. He is wealthy, famous, praised and read all over the world. But at the height of his glorious new life, an e-mail arrives, the first salvo in a terrifying, anonymous campaign: You are a thief, it says. 3w
See All 10 Comments
EadieB As Jake struggles to understand his antagonist and hide the truth from his readers and his publishers, he begins to learn more about his late student, and what he discovers both amazes and terrifies him. Who was Evan Parker, and how did he get the idea for his “sure thing” of a novel? What is the real story behind the plot, and who stole it from whom? 3w
EadieB This is a slow burn of a unique story. The plot has many twists and turns which kept me reading until the very end of the book. It is a psychological thriller about an author who dies and his plot is stolen by his teacher. The book is an instant success. An email arrives and says, “You are a thief.” If you like books about a successful plot that is stolen then you will love this book. 3w
EadieB Read it for yourself and see how he handles the accusation. 3w

A four-year-old Mi‘kmaq girl goes missing from the blueberry fields of Maine, sparking a tragic mystery that haunts the survivors, unravels a community, and remains unsolved for nearly fifty years.

EadieB July 1962. A Mi‘kmaq family from Nova Scotia arrives in Maine to pick blueberries for the summer. Weeks later, four-year-old Ruthie, the family‘s youngest child, vanishes. She is last seen by her six-year-old brother, Joe, sitting on a favorite rock at the edge of a berry field. Joe will remain distraught by his sister‘s disappearance for years to come. 1mo
EadieB
In Maine, a young girl named Norma grows up as the only child of an affluent family. Her father is emotionally distant, her mother frustratingly overprotective. Norma is often troubled by recurring dreams and visions that seem more like memories than imagination. As she grows older, Norma slowly comes to realize there is something her parents aren‘t telling her.
1mo
EadieB Unwilling to abandon her intuition, she will spend decades trying to uncover this family secret.
I read this book and found it very interesting. Joe and Norma were interchanging narrators. It is a story about the search for truth, the shadow of trauma and the persistence of love across time.

#TheMaltaExchange #SteveBerry #March2024 #TheBookSpin #SeriesLove2024 #ReadAway2024

A deadly race for the Vatican‘s oldest secret fuels New York Times bestseller Steve Berry‘s latest international Cotton Malone thriller.
The pope is dead. A conclave to select his replacement is about to begin. Cardinals are beginning to arrive at the Vatican, but one has fled Rome for Malta in search of a document that dates back to the 4th century and

EadieB Constantine the Great.
Former Justice Department operative, Cotton Malone, is at Lake Como, Italy, on the trail of legendary letters between Winston Churchill and Benito Mussolini that disappeared in 1945 and could re-write history. But someone else seems to be after the same letters and, when Malone obtains then loses them, he‘s plunged into a hunt that draws the attention of the legendary Knights of Malta.
1mo
EadieB This was a very good book by Steve Berry. Cotton Malone is on the trail of letters between Churchill and Mussolini. He is also interested in finding the Nostra Trinita which the Church is very interested in too. The book is about WWII history, Catholic Church history, the Knights of Malta, and the process of electing a pope and the operations of the Vatican. 1mo
EadieB The book takes us to the geography, scenery, and history of Northern Italy and the Island of Malta. The book is a bit different than the plot of his other books but has a few twists and turns to add to the enjoyment. I'm looking forward to the next installment from Steve Berry as I do like his books. If you like history then you will love to read this book. 1mo

There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men‘s maximum-security prison:
1) Treat all prisoners with respect.

3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates.
But none of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules.

EadieB Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the penitentiary‘s most notorious and dangerous inmates. And they certainly don‘t know that Shane was Brooke‘s high school sweetheart—the star quarterback who is now spending the rest of his life in prison for a series of grisly murders. #FabulousFebruary #20in4 #Readathon #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove24

Two estranged brothers must confront the violence of the past when they find out a pond where they played as children will be dredged. After some traumatic teenaged years in rural Connecticut, Cale and Ambrose Casey had nothing left to say to each other. Cale ran off to Hawaii to sell luxury real estate. Ambrose stayed behind and built up his construction company.

EadieB Neither thought they‘d be in touch again and were glad for it—until they learned of a real estate developer‘s plan to drain and expand Gibbs Pond. Nearly 30 years before, the Casey brothers buried a secret in that pond, which fell somewhere between self-defense and family preservation. Lily Rowe, the contractor in charge of the dredging, can also trace her roots—and her trauma—to the banks of Gibbs Pond. 2mo
EadieB After a childhood that saw her and her brother yanked across the country by her abusive father, it was here where she finally stayed put, even if they didn‘t. But as ambitious as Lily is, and as much as she wants answers of her own, her family also has secrets to protect. Now, the haunted lives of Cale, Ambrose, and Lily collide once more as they reunite to unearth the devastation of the past. 2mo

This is a story of family secrets. The plot was good and well developed and the two main characters of Cale and Lily were nicely drawn too. All in all, the book was very well written with good dialogue that kept me reading until the end of the book. This is a debut novel but I am looking forward to his next novel as I found this book a very easy read. If you like novels about family secrets then you would love this book.

Explore the mysteries of 20 unsolved murders of the last century including the Black Dahlia, the Zodiac Killer and the JonBenet Ramsey case. This book is a great introduction to the famous unsolved cases. The authors have researched and related information and the book is well written.

EadieB I'm sure if you found one or two crimes you were interested in, you could get other books about the murder and read further. I am looking forward to find more books about murder as I'm fascinated by these types of books. If you like books about true crime, this book is a great start. 2mo

Brian D'Ambrosio examines the most notorious murders in the state of Montana. Some are historical accounts from early Wild West history, but most are contemporary cases that shocked communities. Many remained unsolved. Some cases have been featured in national media, such as the famous murders of Patrick Duffy (Dallas) and the serial murders of the Unabomber.

EadieB This is a riveting account of murder of unfortunate victims. Brian D'Ambrosio did a great job with the research and relating the stories. I plan to visit Montana soon and thought I would look into what crimes happened in Montana. I would be interested in reading another book by D'Ambrosio as I found this book well written. If you like true crime then you would love reading this book. 2mo

On an August 4-5th night in 1952, a British couple and their 10 year old daughter, John, Anne, and Elizabeth Drummond were murdered in a lay-by in Provence, France. John was a scientist and a British biochemist who was knighted for naming of vitamins and British diet nutrition under wartime rationing during Second World War. His murder had been known as the Dominici affair

EadieB but there is much speculation over the identity of the murderer and the motive behind the crime. This was a very interesting book and I enjoyed reading about the murder. The author, Rene Weis, did a great job with research and explaining everything that happened. A local farmer had been arrested as the murderer. He is Gaston Dominici, 73 years old, and was convicted, sentenced to death by guillotine. 2mo
EadieB President Rene Coty commuted the sentence to life imprisonment and in 1959 President Charles DeGaulle ordered Dominici released on humanitarian grounds. He was not pardoned and did not receive another trial. If you like true crime books then you would love this book. You need to read this for yourself and see what you think. Was John Drummond on a spy mission or was he a victim of the farmer? (edited) 2mo

Reporter Anne Lemire writes the Rumor Clinic, a newspaper column that disproves the many harmful rumors floating around town. Tired of chasing silly rumors about Rosie Riveters safety on the job, she wants to write about something bigger. Special Agent Devon Mulvey spends his weekends preventing industrial sabotage and he spends his evenings wooing the many lonely women whose

EadieB husbands are off at war. When Anne's story about Nazi propaganda intersects with Devon's investigation into the death of a factory worker, the two are led down a dangerous trail of espionage, organized crime, and domestic fascism. This is a powerful thriller by Thomas Mullen. There are alternate points of view by Anne and Devon. There are plenty of twists and turns that had me reading to a satisfying ending. 2mo
EadieB I am now looking forward to the next novel by Thomas Mullen. If you like books about history, then you would love this book. 2mo

Georgina Drake, taking pictures of the Hartington Hall, when she finds Karen Berry dead on the floor. Karen Berry had plenty of enemies. Karen had argued with her husband, alienated her two step-daughters, and fired the housekeeper for thief. This left Georgina wondering about her death.

EadieB DI Colon Bradshaw put the household through interviews. While walking Bertie, her spaniel, digs up a human skeleton, and Georgina is once again in the middle of a mystery. What dark secrets at Hartingdon Hall connects the two crimes? Can Georgina unmask the killer before they strike again? This book is the 2nd in A Georgina Drake Mystery series by Kate Hardy. 2mo

McCraken Poston, Jr. has written a book about a TV repairman who was a harmless eccentric or a bizarre killer in October 1997. Alvin Ridley, in the town of Ringgold in northwest Georgia reportedly had killed his wife. McCracken Poston, Jr, his legal attorney, pierced together the full story behind Virginia and Alvin's marriage and her cause of death.

EadieB This is a true crime courtroom drama that shows how the Zenith man returned to his peculiar lifestyle, a free man. This is a great read that I will remember for a long time. Alvin was diagnosed as an autistic person. I have a granddaughter with the same diagnose and she is the sweetest person so I can understand the circumstances surrounding this case. This is the 2nd novel in the DS Alana Mack series set in Dublin. There are women being killed on a Dublin Dart train line. They only have fresh white sheets and a single rose on their bed at home. The novel is told in Alana's point of view. Sarah Buckenham is reported missing by her husband but her body has not been found yet.

DI Kim Stone's, 5th installment is about the murder of Deanna Brightman and Maxine Wakeman. Their stab wounds were very similar so they knew it was the same killer. Dr. Alex Thorne, from the 2nd book in the series, is back in the picture from prison trying to bring Kim down. Kim's mother is attempting parole and Kim tells them she is not ready to be released.

EadieB These are the highlights of this book. You need to read this book in order to get the full picture of what is happening. The book is full of twists and turns which forces me to read until the surprise ending. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. This is a very interesting book about how a Hollywood star is discovered and all about her movies. Lana Turner is the star! It‘s about her husbands and boyfriends. She had one daughter named Cheryl with her husband, Stephen Crane. When Cheryl was 14, Lana had a boyfriend named John Stampanato who was very jealous and who used to abuse Lana.

EadieB Lana‘s mood used to change and Cheryl saw how Lana was afraid of John. One night when John was at Lana‘s house, they argued. Cheryl said she grabbed the kitchen knife and John ended up dead on the bedroom floor. Cheryl was only 14 at the time and was too young to be charged with murder. She became a law of the court and was made to live with her grandmother. If you like books about true crime, then you would love the book. 3mo

Sharon Stevenson is a forensic psychiatrist. Her job is to decide whether a patient is of sound enough mind to stand trial, not whether they did or didn‘t commit a crime. But Sharon is also a mother grieving the disappearance of her seventeen-year-old daughter, Maddie, who has never been found.

EadieB And what if the man sitting before her, who has been charged with the murders of several women, also claimed the life of her sweet girl? It‘s time to find out the truth. An unputdownable psychological thriller about a dangerous cat-and-mouse game between a mother desperate for the truth and the killer she believes has the answers. 3mo
EadieB This was an awesome book. It held my interest all the way through until the surprise ending. The plot was excellent. Kevin was diagnosed with DID which is dissociative identity disorder. With the real killer in custody, Kevin is saved in the end and will be placed in a psychiatric hospital. 3mo

A shocking message on an ancient papyrus. A man intent on destroying it. And a forgotten pope that could be lost to history. Cal Donovan, a theology professor at Harvard, receives an urgent message from a former graduate student, Samia Tedros. Now a museum conservator in Cairo, Samia has discovered a miraculous fragment of papyrus with three unknown lines from the Gospel of

EadieB Mary Magdalene so explosive that a wealthy man is willing to kill to ensure no one ever sees it. At the Vatican, another drama is developing. The new Pope has defied centuries of tradition and appointed a nun, Sister Elisabetta Celestino, as his secretary of state. Powerful insiders are outraged that a woman now sits as the second most influential person at the Vatican, and they plot to destroy her. 3mo
EadieB When Samia shows up at Cal‘s doorstep in the dead of night, he is drawn into a deadly competition to possess a papyrus with the power to rescue Sister Elisabetta and change the course of Christianity.
Glenn Cooper, an excellent writer and researcher has written another novel full of intrigue. The Last Pope confirms that women played and important role in the early Christian Church.
3mo
EadieB It tells that Mary Magdalene succeeded Peter as the second Pope in Rome. Pope John receives flack for appointing Sister Elizabeth Celestine as his Secretary of State. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

EadieB Frankie would stop by the VA and go to discussion groups and be told that only men were in Vietnam and fought in the war. Even her parents told her not to talk about the war. Kristin Hannah has written a book about all the women who served in Vietnam. The book is a great tribute to these women and one that should be read by all. Her best friends, Barb and Ethel, she met in Vietnam. 3mo

The brutal massacre of the Harford family at Potwoolstan Hall in Devon in 1985 shocked the country and passed into local folklore. And when a journalist researching the case is murdered twenty years later, the horror is reawakened.

EadieB Sixteenth century Potwoolstan Hall, now a New Age healing centre, is reputed to be cursed because of the crimes of its builder, and it seems that this inheritance of evil lives on as DI Wesley Peterson is faced with his most disturbing case yet. As more people die violently, Wesley needs to discover why a young woman has transformed a dolls house into a miniature reconstruction of the massacre scene. 3mo
EadieB And could the solution to his case lie across the Atlantic Ocean, in the ruined remains of an early English settlement in Virginia USA? When the truth is finally revealed, it turns out to be as horrifying as it is dangerous.
The mass murder at Potwoolstan Hall in 1985 has a lot of characters that have changed their name in this modern day mystery which was never solved in 1985.
3mo
EadieB The characters are a bit confusing and hard to keep straight. Wesley and Pam's marriage is going through a tough period as she is taking care of 2 children by herself and her husband is always at work. I'm hoping their marriage gets straighten out and Wesley and Pam stay together. If you like murder with lots of characters then you will love this book. The Last Flight | Julie Clark

Two women. Two flights. One last chance to disappear.
Claire Cook has a perfect life. Married to the scion of a political dynasty, with a Manhattan townhouse and a staff of ten, her surroundings are elegant, her days flawlessly choreographed, and her future auspicious. But behind closed doors, nothing is quite as it seems.

EadieB That perfect husband has a temper that burns as bright as his promising political career, and he's not above using his staff to track Claire's every move, making sure she's living up to his impossible standards. But what he doesn't know is that Claire has worked for months on a plan to vanish.
A chance meeting in an airport bar brings her together with a woman whose circumstances seem equally dire.
3mo
EadieB Together they make a last-minute decision to switch tickets--Claire taking Eva's flight to Oakland, and Eva traveling to Puerto Rico as Claire. They believe the swap will give each of them the head start they need to begin again somewhere far away. But when the flight to Puerto Rico goes down, Claire realizes it's no longer a head start but a new life. 3mo
EadieB Cut off, out of options, with the news of her death about to explode in the media, Claire will assume Eva's identity, and along with it, the secrets Eva fought so hard to keep hidden.
This was a highly suspenseful book. A bit like Strangers on the Train where they switch places to kill someone. In this book, they switch plane seats and one goes to Puerto Rico and the other one California.
