This is, unsurprising not an easy read. However, it is a compelling read, and although there are some liberties taken with history, , the changes sadly aren't outside of the realm of possibilities given the time period. I cannot imagine how terrifying the reality was.
My heart was in my mouth on numerous occasions, and I felt for Cora so much on her journey.
Definitely recommended, but not for the faint of heart.

This has been a long time coming. I started reading before I started studying, the stopped halfway through. Four years(!) later I have finished it, and it was totally worth the wait. I can't think of many books which poke fun at the British with such love or eloquence.

Giving audio books a whirl. The first one didn't really work that well for me (Stephen King's The Dark Tower), and im always worried it's too... passive, but two chapters in and I'm loving this! Amy recommendations for other good ones? #audiobooks #listening #readtome

So this is the story of how I realised I was a nerd. I was driving back from my parents, listening to Katy Perry's ET, because, well, Spotify decided I wanted to listen. There's a line where Kanye says "I know a bar out in Mars", and my first thought was "dammit, there's a restaurant at the end of the universe, try harder man!". Books have ruined me... and I'm good with that #nerd #scifi #tryharder

Feeling a little bit lost at the moment (the perils of spending several years studying) and for some reason this book popped into my head last night, reminding me of my trip to NZ six odd years ago and giving me a mild case of itchy feet again. I loved having this book accompany me as I drove around for three weeks. Maybe it's time for another trip... #newzealand #travelling #wanderlust #memories #whatnow

Now I'm British. We have a proud tradition of innuendo (see the Great British Bake Off for reference). However what's above is not innuendo, it's just lewd and inappropriate.
The completionist in me is battling against the urge to stop reading this, as I'm finding it so frustrating!

This book is... odd. I wasn't entirely certain where it was going throughout most of it, but in a confused way, rather than one thst kept me guessing.

This was my other holiday read. It was... entertaining, I guess. I wanted to find out what happened, but I sort of guessed early one who the culprit was. I didn't really warm that much to the characters (particularly Anna) and found Rachel so irrational, which makes sense given her alcoholism, that I got frustrated.

This. Book. Is. Absolutely. Terrifying! And brilliant. I couldn't put it down, despite the massive sense of unease I felt whenever I was reading. It is not a comfortable or happy read, but definitely worthy of picking up. Allegories to current events abound, but I suspect this has been the case since it was first published. #scary #sobering #currentevents #handmaid

This was my first Neil Gaimin book and I loved it! I enjoyed the journey of Shadow, and all the Gods who had been brought to the USA by immigrants over the centuries. I didn't want lunch to end at work because I had to stop reading!
Definitely recommended! Now to decide whether I watch the TV show or not... the one person who started watching at work gave up...

Not a bad way to shelter from the rain showers on a Saturday morning. Really enjoying my first foray into Neil Gaimin's writing, and I'm going to be sad when I come to the end of Shadow's journey #books #coffee #lazysaturday #neilgaiman #happy

MayJasper Yes me too. I'm on that journey now. 7y
RhubarbandGin @MayJasper I really enjoyed the whole thing (just wished there was more... like most books lol). How far though are you? 7y
MayJasper I'm 230 pages in. Shadow is living in the funeral parlour in Cairo with Ibis and Jacquel. 7y
MayJasper I thought the book might be too weird for me at first, especially when the first god 'swallowed' the man during sex but now I'm loving this book. I like the way the story jumps and jumps and jumps again 😊 7y
RhubarbandGin @MayJasper yeah, that part did make me wonder what on earth I was reading! But I stuck with it and was so glad I did! Just wondering now whether I should watch the TV show or not... 7y

I try not to jump on bandwagon, but Harry Potter at 20 is one I'll gladly leap on. I was a little later to join the party, picking this up just before the first film came out in 2001. I was 18 and working my gap year, wondering what to do, and reading had fallen by the wayside somewhat. But then I started reading... and I didn't want to stop. It was an joy - I felt like I was there on Privet Drive with Dumbledore and McGonagall #harrypotter

Starting reading this a couple of days ago (impulse buy from Waterstones a few weeks ago)... So far I'm enjoying it (50 pages in). The writing style isn't quite what I was expecting., but that's no bad thing. Definitely a good way to spend my lunch break. Id love to be sitting reading in the sunshine... This is a difficult one to review, as it's not my usual read. It is slow to get going, bit this justs allows you to get to know the characters and get a feel of the atmosphere. Which is, to not put to find a point on it, oppressively depressing. The scenario, the characters - bullied Oskar, drunk Lacke. There is depth to them all, but their story aren't happy.
Your YA vampire story this most certainly is not. But it is worth a read.

This is very bittersweet, being the last book by Terry Pratchett. But it's fun, serious and silly, just as you would expect from a Discworld novel. And the way the first event in the book is dealt with (sorry for being cryptic, trying to avoid spoilers) is magnificent.

Is been a long time since I finished a book in less than a week... This took me two days. Definitely recommended!

MariaW I cried so much over Granny!!!! I couldn't cope with it for a few hours. But it was kind of appropriate, being his last book. #speakhisname (edited) 7y
RhubarbandGin @MariaW it was sad, but also appropriate, if that makes sense. No fuss and bother, just as you would expect from Granny. I think one of the hardest parts to read was the Afterword, when I finally realised that this was it and there wouldn't be any new stories. #uglycry 7y
MariaW @RhubarbandGin You're so right. At least he left us with a lot of stories to reread again and again. 7y

Harry Potter, eighteen years on...
I really wanted to love this, honestly I did. But.... I didn't. 😞
Maybe it's because I'm unaccustomed to reading scripts; or more likely it's because i liked the 'happily ever after' closure which we got at the end of the Deathly Hallows. Seeing Harry, in part struggling with adulting doesn't really work for me.
Maybe it's time to reread the books, though...

This is the third book in the"Library" series of books. Irene is back and this time more is at stake - it's not just about one book, the future of the Library is at stake! The usual cast of characters are back, with Irene taking the lead once again.
I really enjoyed this (although the first is still my favourite), it is a fun read, and at times difficult to put down. I'd definitely recommend it if you want a fun and not to serious read.

It's been a while since I've read any Discworld books (or really anything else), and I've missed a few of the Moist Von Lipwig books, skipping straight from 'Going Postal' to this.
'Raising Steam's is great fun; although i wouldn't say it's one of the best books, it's entertaining and silly - exactly what i enjoy and look forward too when i step back into Ankh Morpork.
