Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre | Charlotte Brontë
Bronte’s novel about a shy, quiet governess who becomes a tutor in a great house and falls in love with its lonely and mysterious master is one of the great classics of English literature. Unique in its attention to the thoughts and feelings of a female protagonist, Jane Eyre was ahead of its time as a proto-feminist text. When it was published in 1847, however, Bronte was attacked by critics for what they felt was anti-Christian sentiment in her unflinching critique of the oppressions of Victorian society.

“I blamed none of those who repulsed me. I felt it was what was to be expected, and what could not be helped: an ordinary beggar is frequently an object of #suspicion; a well-dressed beggar inevitably so. To be sure, what I begged was employment; but whose business was it to provide me with employment? Not, certainly, that of persons who saw me then for the first time, and who knew nothing about my character.” #QuotsyJune19

Loving this audiobook at the moment, the version I chose is read by Elizabeth Klett, who is easy to listen to. I have never read a Bronte book before and I have recently watched the movie, Jane Eyre, on Netflix, so inspired me to find the book. Beautifully written and gentle story so far, thoroughly enjoying this classic novel like I never thought I would

Book #21: Continuing on through my grandfather's book collection I noticed there was a large number of books by Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters. And so I decided to sit down and tackle some of those books.
It has been so long since I have read Jane Eyre, I feel that I can't do it justice anymore. This is another of the books I need to go back to...
