BarkingMadRead
Rebecca | Daphne D Maurier

IndoorDame The intro to my copy points out that she is only ever “the second Mrs de Winter” (and it has some very pointed things to say about that 😂) but that‘s quite a mouthful so I think she‘s gonna need a nickname 3w

BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame I totally agree. We have to call her something 🤷🏻‍♀️ poor thing never has a name, although we know it‘s a pretty one and also unique. Super helpful. 3w
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead I‘ve often wondered what constitutes a “unique” name for a white woman in England in the 30s 3w
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame probably something so chill now 3w
Ruthiella Her name is Jan Brady, forever doomed to be overshadowed by Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! I mean, Rebecca. 3w
IndoorDame @Ruthiella 👏👏👏 Sold! call her Jan 🤣 (edited) 3w
Ruthiella Also, it‘s so awkward when your first date is an attempted murder/suicide! 😱😆 3w
CatLass007 @Ruthiella You have a wicked sense of humor! I like that in a person. 3w
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella 🤣☠️🤣☠️ 3w
Bookwormjillk Jan 😂 🏈 3w
rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella Jan is perfect! 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I need to find a book about gardens in DDuM books. "The daffodils were in bloom, stirring in the evening breeze, golden heads cupped upon lean stalks, and however many you might pick there would be no thinning of the ranks, they were massed like an army, shoulder to shoulder. On a bank below the lawns, crocuses were planted, golden, pink, and mauve, but by this time they would be past their best, dropping and fading, like pallid snowdrops.⬇️ 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig The primrose was more vulgar, a homely pleasant creature who appeared in every cranny like a weed. Too early yet for bluebells, their heads were still hidden beneath last year‘s leaves, but when they came, dwarfing the more humble violet, they choked the very bracken in the woods, and with their color made a challenge to the sky....People who plucked bluebells from the woods were vandals; he had forbidden it at Manderley." 3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig So many flowers in this Chapter. I highlighted so many. 3w
Roary47 @Ruthiella I love it! Jan is who I will imagine her to be. Plus we don‘t know her actual age either. Are they on a date showing she‘s older than a child? 3w
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 I get the idea that she‘s an adult, but maybe a bit younger than Max 3w
Ruthiella @Roary47 I am reading a bit ahead. I think in chapter five it‘s confirmed she is 21. 👍 But Maxim is “old enough to be her father”, so 35 to 40 years old, I imagine. 🤔 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @Crinoline_Laphroaig Yes, the descriptions are so vivid and wonderful! I can see the flowers so clearly! 3w
Bookwormjillk These chapters are long but they don‘t feel like it. 3w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I totally agree! 3w
Graciouswarriorprincess @Crinoline_Laphroaig These descriptions are so vivid! 3w
julieclair I am really appreciating du Maurier‘s beautifully descriptive prose this time around. I don‘t remember noticing it as much the first time I read this. 3w
ElizaMarie I agree with “Jan“ as her name for now... But wouldn't it be wild if her name is Daphne? I mean, if I were an author, maybe I would name a character after myself and then say how beautiful the name is repeatedly. 3w
BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie that‘s a brilliant point! 3w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Oh, my nose! Oh,my nose! 😂😂😂 3w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk As opposed to our last book! #oy 😂🤗🤩 3w

Hoping for some good non-fiction reads. Asking for a campus reading program. Think mostly 18-21 year olds who are coming from very different backgrounds and are sometimes reluctant readers. I wish we could get the tagged book but we don‘t have access to it with enough e-copies so I‘m looking for something else gripping like this! #nonfiction #suggestionsplease

Smrloomis @mrsmarch Thanks for all these! I loved Lab Girl, but I don‘t know the others so I will add them. I only know the tv version of All Creatures Great and Small 😆 so maybe it‘s time to read the book. 5y
mrsmarch @Smrloomis I love JH‘s stories and they‘re nice bite size stories for readers who might be unpracticed. Plus who doesn‘t love animals. 5y
Smrloomis @mrsmarch that sounds good! The students are also mostly from outside the US or Canada so I am hoping to find something with broad appeal. 5y
Smrloomis @Blaire Thanks! I loved Educated but haven‘t gotten to Bad Blood yet. I will add these to the list! (edited) 5y
Smrloomis @BibliOphelia I haven‘t read either of them so thanks for the suggestions. I‘ll have to check them out! 5y
BibliOphelia They are both really compelling stories that read like novels. I wish he‘d write something else in the same vein! 5y
Smrloomis @BibliOphelia that sounds great. Good to know! 👍🏽 5y
BibliOphelia Good luck! 5y

Starting September and through to the end of the year I'm reading on feminism and women's issues etc. I'm looking for suggestions . I have a long list but feel I may miss a ton !!! So any recommendations are appreciated !!! #feminism #feminist #girlpower #lookingforbooks #lookingfortitles #suggestionsplease

TheBookHippie @Aquedita I've been reading since January so I've covered all the "collegiate" and educational books and pamphlets ..I've covered popular books and some older authors ...I assume I'm missing a ton still. Trying to get a well rounded all sides take :) also I am explaining feminism to young ladies ...so hope that makes sense !!? 7y
Aquedita @TheBookHippie Got it! I assume you already covered "Feminism is for everyone" by bell hooks? As a huge history geek I always make sure to pay tribute to the women who paved the path, so I highly recommend "A Room of One's Own" and "Vindication of the Rights of Women". Revolutionary for the time, even if it feels a but oldschool. 7y
TheBookHippie @Aquedita yup I've read all of those!!! Finished Vindication of Women this week!!! Loved it! 7y
charissharpe Ive just started The War on Women by Sue Lloyd-Roberts. Will be keeping an eye on your feed for reading suggestions! 7y
KGlibrarian A great little book I just came across is Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie 7y
TheBookHippie @KGlibrarian 🙌🏻💗I have been wanting that.. is it worth the purchase? 7y
KGlibrarian Definitely worth the purchase! It's a book I will read over and over again. 7y
TheBookHippie @KGlibrarian yay!!! Thanks so much! On my to do list it goes. 7y
Jess7 This one is ok: 7y
Jess7 Heard mixed reviews on this: 7y
TheBookHippie @Jess7 I liked shrill but I also met her and really enjoyed her viewpoints ! I've read all those you mentioned except Too Fat etc so I will pick that up!!! Thanks so much!!! 7y
