Mary Austin was an American writer and one of the early nature writers of the American Southwest. Her book, The Land of Little Rain, written in 1903, describes the fauna, flora, and people of the region between the High Sierra and the Mojave Desert of southern California. As this area of the country is not far from where we live in Vegas, I decided I would like to go and see these areas and visit her home in Independence, CA.

LeahBergen It‘s so pretty! I love visiting the homes of authors. 4w

#Mtcookbook on a roll! Enchiladas for dinner last night. The sauce could use more heat for husband and I, but that‘s adjustable by adding a hotter chile powder.

We fell in love with the food in NM - couldn‘t find a bad meal if we tried. 😋 The best is anything “Christmas”, with both red & green chile sauces.

LeahBergen I fell in love with the food there, too! And yes to anything served “Christmas” style as I could never decide if I wanted the red or the green sauce. 😆 2mo
willaful My husband described being in China that way, that they hadn't learned how to make bad food yet. 2mo
Cheshirecat913 Love NM food. I prefer green in general, but red for certain things. But for sure, smoother it all in chile. 😄 2mo
mabell I haven‘t made enchiladas in years - this sounds so good! 2mo

BK's first novel? It's safe to say she hit the ground running!
I love how she writes her characters and shows how interdependent they all are on each other.
Others of hers I've read (and loved) do tend towards the didactic: here, the surprise was humour.
Despite the horrible, horrible things that happen off the page, it's a book that restores my faith in people (which is no mean feat!) My book of the month, for sure.

squirrelbrain I‘ve read most of Kingsolver‘s books, but not this one. Sounds great! 3mo

John Nichols died yesterday. Years ago, I devoured his fiction when I lived in the Southwest. RIP.

Codi returns to Grace, her hometown in Arizona, because her father is struggling with Alzheimer‘s.She falls in love with her first lover Loyd,a Native American man.Codi‘s backstory&Loyd‘s character are well written&there are some beautiful scenes but there is too much going on:environmental issues, the Nicaraguan revolution,Native American culture&overall it reads a bit like a romance novel.I loved that it‘s set in the Southwest.Soft pick

Some books find you at the exact right moment. I have disliked everything by Cather I had ever attempted to read. I put this on my list because it met 1925 for my #192025 challenge. I loved it from the first beautiful phrase. It captures so much beauty and tragic heartache. In the landscape and in mankind. Nuance and realism. Truly a masterpiece. This will affect me for a long time.

Librarybelle Awesome! I need to read Cather. 6mo
BarbaraBB Wow what a review! I‘ll check this out. I only read and enjoyed her 6mo

“ I wave to Mom where she waits on the porch, flash her a fistful of flowers, and the first smile she's seen since New York.“ I really like this quote because it shows Jayden's growth and appreciation for his new home.
