The Widening Stain | W. Bolingbroke Johnson

Pickpick

This mystery classic had humor and some quirky characters. Published in #1942 , the setting is an academic library with librarian Gilda as the amateur sleuth. She‘s prickly, but with a flare that makes her entertaining. Johnson uses this book to softly poke fun at academia. A nice lighthearted mystery at a time where levity was needed. The audio took me awhile to get into, but I overall enjoyed this one. #192025

Thanks #NetGalley & the publisher

LeahBergen I‘ve been eyeing this one! 2w

A very good American Mystery Classic. The amateur sleuth is mostly sensible and the university library setting is a big plus.

Happy Limerick Day! #OnThisDay in 1812 Edward Lear was born in Middlesex. Often mistakenly credited with inventing the limerick, Lear popularized the form with his Book of Nonsense, containing around 100 of the short, humorous poems.
There was an Old Man with a beard,
who said, “It is just as I feared! –
Two Owls and a Hen,
four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!”

Because no one has ever heard of “Hickory Dickory Dock,” “Little Miss Muffet,” “Jack and Jill Went Up The Hill,” or even “There Was an Old Man from Nantucket,” we have to have this sappy... I don‘t even know what to call this. Was she drinking (as she suggested - liquid courage and all) when she wrote this?

For feck sake!!! Yes, because, as we all know, NURSERY RHYMES are just terrifying beyond belief. That‘s why children aren‘t allowed to bloody well hear nursery rhymes.

GingerAntics @rabbitprincess I‘ve got some more funny hashtags for ya on this one 😏 (edited) 3y
rabbitprincess 😆 thanks for the tags! This sounds like a terrible book. 3y
GingerAntics @rabbitprincess 😂 coming up with good tags for it was the only real good part. It‘s labelled “for teens and adults.” As an adult, I found this book it be useless and cheesy. I work with teenagers, no way this would do anything but make them hate poetry. 3y

The illustrations are greatly disturbing which is what you expect from Gris Grimly. The grim limericks are okay. Many are really cute. I just wish the book had a better flow.

My $6 #folio edition, plus some tomatoes. And some feathers I found yesterday on our walk. I have NO idea what the birds in my neighborhood have been up to. #SimplyFoxed had a great, sad article about Lear in a recent issue.
#foliofreaks

Aimeesue The tomatoes and feathers were already on the table. I'm just lazy. I had to pick as many tomatoes as possible today, because this morning I caught a squirrel out in a tomato pot and when I went out onto the deck, I found a whole pile of tomatoes - all with one bite out of them. Somebody thinks she's Ramona Quimby. (edited) 5y
