Nope, this was really rather annoying, actually. Clearly I‘m not the target market for a book about a millennial who is getting divorced in her late 20s, but still…

I thought the first couple of chapters were OK and mildly amusing, but then it became apparent that the MC had no redeeming qualities whatsoever and was just obnoxious. Some authors can write such characters and you revel in their nastiness, but this wasn‘t one of those cases.

Cinfhen This was a BIG NOPE from @Megabooks too!!! Im taking a #Pass 1y

squirrelbrain I was just about to tag @Megabooks Cindy! @Cinfhen See, I didn‘t like it either Meg. Probably should have panned it but I‘m not that brave! 1y
Oryx I was interested in this one too, but then I saw a few bad reviews here. So this had confirmed it. Not going to bother with this one. 1y
Ruthiella Totally agree, a book about an awful person can be compelling and interesting, but it sounds like it missed the mark. I heard about this book on a podcast where the author was a guest. (edited) 1y
Susanita Okay, your first sentence made me 😂 1y
BarbaraBB 😂😂 I‘ll pass! 1y
squirrelbrain @Oryx @Ruthiella I think the issue was the whole book was rather one-dimensional. It may work for those in their twenties as I‘m sure it would resonate more, but that‘s definitely not me! 🤣 1y
Ruthiella @squirrelbrain The author is also a writer for TV. I wonder if it would work better on screen (think Carrie Bradshaw in SATC). 1y
Megabooks You were much nicer in your review than me 😇, but I 💯💯💯💯 agree! Worst of the year so far for me. 1y
squirrelbrain It could work better on screen, but she was like the bad bits of all of the SATC characters put together, and none of the good! 🤣 @Ruthiella 1y
Librarybelle I just put this on hold at the library. I‘ll enter it with caution once I get it… 1y

Shrines- vintage Atkinson ✔️
Unsinkable- enjoyed
Act of Oblivion- meh, not nearly as exciting as it should have been
Six Years- usual entertaining, bonkers plot from Coben
Just starting 1989.

Cinfhen You read the Atkinson so quick!!! Do u think it‘s my cuppa?? I‘m on the fence 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
TrishB @Cinfhen I know you didn‘t really like her style of writing and this is vintage Atkinson, so I‘m going to say no or wait for an offer/freebie! 2y
CarolynM I loved the Atkinson too❤️ I suspect you may not like the way she bends time @Cinfhen 2y
Cinfhen Ohhhh that phrase “bends time” has me rolling my eyes @CarolynM 😁You both know me so well xxxx #Pass 😘 2y

I wanted to love this. I find historical fiction most interesting when it exposes truths about the past, which this certainly does. From kidnapping and sexual slavery in China and San Francisco to the effect of the Chinese Exclusion Act on immigrant workers in Idaho, Zhang covers a lot of ground in the late 19th c Chinese-American experience. But the voice and thoughts of the MC just grated on me. Given all the great reviews, maybe it‘s just me.

merelybookish I bailed on this. I wanted to like it but the voice, as you said, grated. 2y
Megabooks @merelybookish so glad I‘m not alone! 2y

I‘m on a roll with #unpopularopinions. Clearly cowboy romances are not my thing. I found the writing clunky and repetitive. The MCs were immature, and for characters who were supposedly 34 (the hero, Jericho) and early-20s (the heroine, Honey), ridiculously childish in their behavior. Honey was also obsessed with her virginity and with finding someone to hook up with so she‘d no longer be a virgin. It was obnoxious.

Cinfhen Yeah/ that‘s a #pass 😁 2y
robinb Cowboy romances are not my jam either. ;) 2y
DGRachel @robinb I definitely learned my lesson. 🤣🤣 I much prefer historicals. 2y

Pickpick

A lot of the insights Emily makes in this reflective essay collection about her body were universal despite, as a model, her body being her main source of income. That said, even though I finished yesterday, I had to dig deep in my memory to think of the exact points she made. I enjoyed it while reading, but nothing memorable. Low pick. #botm

Not quite the low blows I had feared, but it was obvious the author had an axe to grind in this gossipy book about the media (eg Tina Brown, Ronan Farrow) and politicians (eg Giuliani, Boris Johnson, Al Gore). Okay enough to finish but not one I‘d recommend. 3⭐️ #audiobook #BirthdayBash readathon

BarbaraBB You did finish it! 👍🏽 3y

Because no one has ever heard of “Hickory Dickory Dock,” “Little Miss Muffet,” “Jack and Jill Went Up The Hill,” or even “There Was an Old Man from Nantucket,” we have to have this sappy... I don‘t even know what to call this. Was she drinking (as she suggested - liquid courage and all) when she wrote this?

I read the 1929 book about “Passing”. Now I‘m starting the 2020, but based in 1968 version!

I can‘t remember what podcast I heard about this 1929 book ? but I was intrigued. I remember as a child my mom telling me actress Lena Horne “passed‘ as white in early Hollywood. We still have a ways to go but we‘ve come along way! ??? #PasséBlanc #PasseBlanc

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ve read Passing and Quicksand by Larsen, definitely worth a read. 4y
tpixie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Passing is really good. I‘ll have to look into Quicksand. She wrote this in 1929! How many other great books are we missing out on?! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tpixie Too many! Sadly.... 4y
