A Place for Us: A Novel | Fatima Farheen Mirza

Pickpick

A beautifully observed story of an Indian-American
Muslim family, themes of faith and identity, seen through the eyes of mother, father, daughter and son. I loved the way we see the same incidents from each POV, altering and bending, as families do. Though I did find the wrangling of the non-linear timeline was not as successful as it could have been. At times it was unclear where we are in time, which POV we are with, which became a bit jarring.

Megabooks Great review! I have apparently already stacked it! 😁 3mo
Reggie Oof the end where the dad tells the grandkid to tell his son on the phone it‘s okay to come back, that they could start again. …😭 3mo
KarenUK @Reggie Oof indeed! So sad….😢 3mo

Definitely slower than the first book, but still an enjoyable read. Although I am blaming this book for keeping me up late reading and contributing to my tiredness today. 🤣

Mehso-so

What a mess, West-Africa in the 90s. When his mother dies and he is left without family, a young boy from #IvoryCoast travels through war torn Liberia and Sierra Leone in search of his aunt. He becomes a child soldier and witnesses all the horrible things a kid shouldn‘t. Drugged and hyper he writes down his story.

Librarybelle This sounds heartbreaking 8mo
Cinfhen The history in modern day Africa is just as heartbreaking as the days of early slavery 8mo
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle @Cinfhen It is heartbreaking indeed and it seems hopeless 💔 8mo
Megabooks Thinking about what the west has imposed on Africa and the issues colonization and slavery created just breaks my heart. It‘s been hard for me to have the emotional space to read these stories this year with the other issues I‘ve had. 8mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I can understand that. It is hard to read and to deal with. 8mo
