I have been getting back into my choice for #MuslimAuthorOrMC for #Booked2019 as my last book for #24B4Monday #readathon Not sure if I‘ll make the 24hr mark, it‘s 8.30pm Sunday here, but I‘m trying! I‘m at just over 20.8hrs & there‘s 3.5hrs to go. Cutting it close I think but maybe🤷🏻‍♀️

This is one of the better police detective novels I‘ve ever read. I did loads of research into WWII for my graduate work, but I‘m embarrassed to say that my knowledge of the war crimes that took place in Bosnia in the ‘90s is limited. I found myself recognizing so many tactics used by the Nazis that I felt an instinctive nausea. This book was like remedial reading for me in that it taught me things that I⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont.) should already know. The author is a scholar in human rights law, so what one gains from this novel are data and facts from the tribunal that serve to amplify, but not buttress, the story here. The author is not at all heavy-handed; the testimony from the war crimes tribunal is woven into the story naturally. The other interesting part of this for me was in learning how Canada treats its refugees in comparison to the United States. ⬇️ (edited) 2mo
gradcat ⬆️ (Cont.) Oh, what a difference a border makes! ♥️ 2mo

Because one can never have too many series ongoing. #StartASeries Quite different from my typical British murder and mayhem picks as it is a geopolitical thriller set in Canada. The recounting of the genocide and rape camps in Bosnia was breathtaking. Not at all an easy read but an important one. 4🌟 👇🏼

cathipink I've wanted to pick up this series- thanks for sharing your review. 2mo

MicheleinPhilly @TrishB It wasn‘t any easy read, that‘s for sure. I need a “garden variety serial killer” respite. 2mo

Loved it! It was inspired by events in the author‘s life in the year after 9/11, & I think that shines through in the writing. Shirin, a Muslim teen, deals with racism on a daily basis, so when a popular white boy shows interest in her, at first she resists, in an effort to keep them both safe from the stares, insults, & possible violence she knows would follow. But alas, our hearts don‘t always listen to our brains.

This is the hardest great book I‘ve read all year. It spans decades in Afghanistan, and tells two women‘s stories. Family, motherhood, and enduring oppression and war are the biggest themes.
