#GetMovin #Believer

"You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer..."

Another of my favorite non-fiction reads this year. I read Member of the Family back in March but keep thinking about it. This song and its lyrics make me think of Dianne Lake, who met Charles Manson when she was fourteen and spent two years being a believer while being manipulated, controlled and abused by him.

Vertabrain I was just wondering what to read next, and had forgotten all about this one. I read Helter Skelter for the first time last month, so the timing is perfect. Thanks for the reminder! 😉 6y
DebinHawaii Whoops! I just realized I used this same book and a similar collage for the #dontbelieveanymore tag for another musical challenge! 🙄Oh well...I guess it's what happens when I do lots of photo challenges. 🤷🏼‍♀️😆 (edited) 6y
DebinHawaii @Vertabrain It's really good--especially after Helter Skelter so you are familiar with the crimes and all the players. 6y
Cinfhen I also forgot I wanted to read this book ever since @Reviewsbylola reviewed it!! Great choice 6y
Reviewsbylola I loved her perspective. It felt fresh even though it‘s a story we all know by now. 6y

#MarchIntoOz #DontBelieveAnymore I'm only about a third of the way into this book by the youngest member of the Manson Family-who fell under Charles Manson's spell when she was just 14. At this point Diane has just met Manson & is entering the 'believer' stage but the disillusionment will begin to set in & she'll be saying I "don't believe anymore" when it comes to Manson & thinking she found the family she was searching for.

LeahBergen I need to get to this one soon. 👍🏻 6y
brendanmleonard I also need to read this; not enough has been written about Manson from the perspective of the girls/women caught up in his madness and abuse. 6y
ashkan_martin_1369 I like the subject but not much familiar with Manson... Can u explain a little bit?😊 6y

BethFishReads The Manson books always creep me out! 6y
Smashlee I am taking @Gayan to CrimeCon this year for her birthday and Diane Lake is going to be there. 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @Smashlee I‘m going to crime con too!!! So excited- what a great guest line up!!! 6y
Smashlee @TheFunkyBookworm I am less the expert than my friend (she could tell you details about most of them for days) but I‘m pretty excited. It‘s my first time going. 🙂 6y
Gayan I have been obsessed with The Family since I read Helter Skelter at 11. @Smashlee is the absolute best, best friend! 6y
britt_brooke Just started this one. 👍🏻 6y

Ronit Krushka #dontbelieveanymore in her Orthodox Jewish upbringing as she grows into an adult and moves to NYC. When her father dies she travels back to London and is forced to confront her past...

I was not a fan of The Power but am loving this book so far! The story and characters have drawn me in immediately.
@Cinfhen have you read this one? Coincidentally, sounds similar to the book you posted about today 😃

#marchintooz

LeeRHarry I loved this one 💕 have yet to read The Power even though I have it - will be interesting ! 😊 6y

#DontBelieveAnymore

In my teens I became obsessed with the Romanov sisters and particularly Anastasia. I read everything I could about Anna Anderson (and the other imposters) and so wanted to believe that she had survived the massacre of her family at Ekaterinburg. Well, the forensics proved otherwise. 🙁

#MarchIntoOz

Kalalalatja I know what you mean! I really wanted to believe she had made it somehow, too. And I really need to read 6y
JamieArc There‘s a book coming out soon called I am Anastasia. It‘s a fiction retelling of the story. It sounded interesting. Might be something you‘ll want to check out 😊 6y
Meeko93 Love Anastasia and very tragic story 😔 6y

Birdsong28 It's fiction but 6y
Birdsong28 And her latest The lost daughter is about this period. 📚📖 6y
jwashreads I loved The Romanovs Sisters. I rely need to read the Romanovs--I bet it's just as fascinating 6y
Mdargusch Anna Anderson sure made me wonder though. I was obsessed too! 6y
emilyhaldi Yes me too!! I still believe, I don't care what they say! 😆🙏🏻 6y
rubyslippersreads I have the tagged book too. And I'm also fascinated with the Romanovs. Looks like there are quiet a few of us. 😊 6y
readordierachel The Russian royals, and Rasputin of course 😉, are all pretty fascinating. 6y
LeahBergen @Kalalalatja I still need to read it, too. 😬 6y
LeahBergen @JamieArc Oh, thanks! I‘ll look into it. 👍🏻 6y
LeahBergen @Meeko93 It is! 😢 6y
LeahBergen @Birdsong28 Thank you! I will check that author out. 👏🏻 6y
LeahBergen @jwashreads I bet it is. 👍🏻 6y
LeahBergen @Mdargusch I definitely thought she Anastasia for a while! 6y
LeahBergen @emilyhaldi 😂😂 Okay, maybe I still do, too (just a teensy bit). 6y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Isn‘t it a lovely book? With all of Anastasia‘s hand-coloured photographs, notes, and baby pictures? 😭 6y
LeahBergen @ReadOrDieRachel So fascinating. And yes ... Rah-Rah-Rasputin! 😂 6y
Centique I‘m another one that was obsessed with the Romanovs as a teen. Such a tragic and gripping tale. I started by reading the story from the investigators point of view - I think that‘s what got me started in loving mysteries 🧐 6y
Kalalalatja Well, I still need to buy it, too, so you are still ahead 😉 6y
Reviewsbylola ME TOO!!! 6y
Reviewsbylola When I got to the end of the Peter Kurth book and read the epilogue re: the DNA testing, my heart dropped. (edited) 6y
LeahBergen @Centique I have one written about the forensic investigation of the Romanov remains. I need to get to it soon 🙄. 6y
LeahBergen @Centique Haha! I just tagged that book and THEN saw your review about it. 😆 6y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola I know! I read a lot about Anna Anderson before any of the DNA analysis was available (and before the mass grave was found). Every bit of news that came out over the years broke my heart a little. 😭 6y
Centique @LeahBergen 😂 Yes that was my entry point 👍 6y
Cinfhen I was getting ready to tag @Reviewsbylola but I see she‘s chimed in!!!! 😉😂 6y

This book is so much fun and a great one to turn to when you‘re feeling cynical and you #dontbelieveanymore. I love reading it with my kids, they are delighted by the magic in it as the dots change by the power of their touch. #marchintooz

Austink1 My kids LOVE this book! 6y

Making an early start on #readaroundtheworld #greece and will try again with Peru next month, as attempt 1 never quite happened and attempt 2 hasn't arrived yet. @JenP

These are raw, angry stories of living in Greece on the poverty line during the economic crisis. And they're good. I read this passage today, and it seemed to fit.

Cinfhen I‘m failing on my #LitsyPassport challenge 😟😢😜 6y
rockpools @Cinfhen Honestly, me too - I've read 1! In fact all of my around-the-world type challenges have gone a bit belly up - I seem to be reading from every country except the ones on the lists! 🗺🙃 6y
BookishMe I found Peru books, mostly about drab and miserable lives too ;(( 6y
rockpools @BookishMe This IS really good. But grim. I failed totally with Peru and not sure how much better I'm going to do with this month's ... 6y

The Essex Serpent | Sarah Perry
post image

I am a sucker for Victorian London, and this cover . . . 😍😍 I haven‘t actually read this one yet though. The #marchintooz prompt #dontbelieveanymore made me think of this one though when I saw it on my shelf. It involves the mythical Essex Serpent. Is the serpent a real species, or as the local vicar fears, the symptom of a moral panic?

BookaholicNatty Beautifulllll!!! 6y
LizzieChantree Gorgeous cover! 6y
night_shift I love this cover! This book has been on my TBR forever! 6y

The Winds of Winter | George R. R. Martin

I #dontbelieveanymore. I‘m beginning to seriously doubt this will be released any time soon. I‘m all for giving authors space and time to write. But.... seriously... come ooooon!

#MarchintoOz

Reviewsbylola Lolol, I haven‘t read this series but I‘ve totally felt that way before. 6y
LitLogophile Lol, write the damn book George! I‘m with you, I‘ve given up home. It‘s better to just accept we‘ll never get it and do a happy dance if we do. ❤️ 6y

ofbooksandme At this point I actually think they're will never be more books of this series. Like I feel it got off Martin's hands and he s just doesn't want to write it anymore 6y
ofbooksandme Hooooowever, if there's ever a chance it's this year. Without the TV show it's a great promotion for the book and a good way to maintain the interest. 6y
Wife I‘ve read the whole series thus far, and it has been so long that I‘m not even interested in picking up the next book when it‘s available. I‘m over it. 6y
julesG Come on he's not as bad as Rothfuss. 😁 6y
Gharv I‘m with you!!! Please send us the new book!!!!!! 6y
AvidReader25 @julesG Don‘t get me started on Rothfuss! 6y
Kalalalatja @Reviewsbylola it is mildly (putting it lightly) infuriating! 😅 @LitLogophile true, if we don‘t expect anything, we can only be pleasantly surprised! @FantasyChick best hashtag! 👏 @ofbooksandme I think you are right. Whatever GRRM does now, he will forever be compared to the tv series, and most likely get criticised, because the tv series has become canon now.. @Wife I know what you mean, but I‘m a completeist, I need to finish it 😄 6y
Kalalalatja @julesG @Avidreader25 and that‘s exactly why I haven‘t started reading Rothfuss yet 😄😄 @Gharv right?! How hard can it be to write a 1500+ pages of intricate fantasy drama, with multiple characters who have all kinds of weird ties. No big deal 😂 6y
Gharv @Kalalalatja no kidding! 😂😂😂 6y
SandyW I've moved my GOT allegiance to HBO. They've done a remarkably good job, and by the time GRRM gets the next book out I'd have to do a re read of virtually the entire series... I get it's a process, but authors need to be fair to their audience too. 6y
Gharv Everyone, I‘d love to hear suggestions for other series that you consider to be similar to GOT 6y
Kalalalatja @Gharv this might be stretching it, but The Tudors with Jonathan Rhys Myers reminds me a bit if GoT because of all the drama. No dragons though 🤷‍♀️ 6y
GatheringBooks we have exactly the same post for this prompt!!! :) 6y
