The Lace Reader
The Lace Reader: A Novel | Brunonia Barry
Every gift has a price . . .Every piece of lace has a secret . . .My name is Towner Whitney. No, that's not exactly true. My real first name is Sophya. Never believe me. I lie all the time. . . .Towner Whitney, the self-confessed unreliable narrator of The Lace Reader, hails from a family of Salem women who can read the future in the patterns in lace, and who have guarded a history of secrets going back generations, but the disappearance of two women brings Towner home to Salem and the truth about the death of her twin sister to light. The Lace Reader is a mesmerizing tale that spirals into a world of secrets, confused identities, lies, and half-truths in which the reader quickly finds it's nearly impossible to separate fact from fiction, but as Towner Whitney points out early on in the novel, "There are no accidents."

Pickpick

Somewhere between a pick and a so-so, so it gets the benefit of the doubt bc I would like to read from this author again. This book has a subtle element of magical realism, and a whole lot of mystery! Actually read this last week, but hadn't posted

This was actually from the previous round of #LMPBC. @tdrosebud, I will mail it back to you next week!

rjsthumbelina Total points for#scarathlon #teamslaughter = 320 3y
tdrosebud I know I expected the magical realism aspect to be bigger than it was but I want disappointed. 3y

tdrosebud Wasn't * 3y
rjsthumbelina @tdrosebud I actually thought that the magical realism hit just right in this story. It was there and mattered but didn't overtake the rest of the plot. That was probably my favorite element 3y

Hi All! I‘ve just sent everyone on my team a little token of my appreciation for your patience with me. I‘m very sorry, but I just can‘t keep up with this round‘s reading schedule. It‘s no one‘s fault but my own, so I‘m sending Lace and 10,000 Doors on unread by me. I have had a difficult year and even though reading is my escape and my passion, my responsibilities took up all of my personal reading time. I‘m deeply sorry to let my team down!!

tdrosebud I'm behind too so I understand. Do you want me to bypass you when I'm ready to send the next book? 3y
Readergrrl @tdrosebud As much as it kills me to say so, but, yes, you should bypass me. The books everyone picked were all on my Wish List and I was so excited to read them, but I‘m just too darn busy. Thank you for your understanding!! 💜💜💜 3y

Here are some choices for #lmpbc #groupI . Do any of these sound good? @Readergrrl @Mynameisacolour @rjsthumbelina

rjsthumbelina I just read The Graveyard Book at Halloween last year. I have read Chocolat, but it was more than 10 years ago, so I wouldn't mind re-reading. Any of the other 3 would be fine, too - they are all books I have been meaning to get to 😄 3y
Readergrrl I have read the top 4 (LOVED them!), but not The Lace Reader. I could also reread any of them! 3y

I had a bit of trouble at the start, there were so many characters to figure out who was who and how they related to each other. Half way through, I figured out the majority of them. There was a lot going on in this story. I did like the storyline with Sophya and the cop. I also liked the setting of Salem. Overall, I really liked this. I was surprised at the ending and it‘s one where I feel like I should go back and reread, knowing what I know now

This novel was just 'okay' for me. Interesting enough that I plan to read the 2nd book in the series (The Fifth Petal), but not so much that I'll be thinking about the characters in the meantime.

Overall I enjoyed this book, 3 1/2 stars. The story was great, but not spectacular. I really enjoyed pulling in the Salem Witches into this novel. I liked it well enough to move to the 2nd book next.

I wanted to like this one far better than I did. I like the concept but the writing seemed to go in circles at times. The lace readers were cool but they never really seemed to have much relevance to the story.

Bostonmomx2 This was recommended to me years ago, I'm not sure why I even remember this gal telling me to read it. I never did and definitely won't now lol 7y
Debiw781 @Bostonmomx2 It seemed to ramble too much in my opinion. I already had book2 so maybe it will improve 7y

I enjoyed this one, but I thought her upcoming book (The Fifth Petal) achieves a lot of what fell short with this one. There wasn't quite enough of a mystical element surrounding the lace reading to make you wonder what was real and what wasn't. I also figured out the twist before it was revealed. I'm using the spoiler tag because knowing there's a twist makes it easier to figure out. Still worth a read, though.

Debiw781 This gives me hope for the second book as the first one seemed like such a letdown 7y

Brunonia Barry has a unique way of story telling. I enjoy her style of writing and the way her stories come together and get clear in the end. Although I much better like her second novel, this was decent.

I work at a library, so I'm always conflicted about buying books, but @bookriot Deal of the Day makes me weak about 5 days out of 7. Anyone else have "library employee guilt" about buying books?

WordWaller I've never heard of this! But then again I don't know any librarians. I'm the opposite--I work at a bookstore so I'm always conflicted about getting new books from the library! Haha 8y
LindaGrace812 My sister is an academic librarian (at a med school), and one of my closest friends is a public librarian. I know TONS of librarians, plus I want my public library to thrive so I'm all about library books, even if it means waiting for eons to get a book! (There are a couple of exceptions to the library rule - Louise Penny is the main one!) 8y
