The Road to Dalton
The Road to Dalton | Shannon Bowring
6 posts | 3 read | 13 to read
From debut author Shannon Bowring comes a novel of small town America that Pulitzer-winner Richard Russo calls, "measured, wise, and beautiful". It's 1990, and the lives of the inhabitants of Dalton, Maine play on. Rose goes to work at the diner every day, her bruises hidden from both the customers and her two young boys. At a table she waits, Dr. Richard Haskell looks back on the one choice that's charted his entire life, before his thoughts wander back to his wife, Trudy, and her best friend. Trudy and Bev have been friends for longer than they can count, and something more than lovers to each other for some time now--a fact both accepted and ignored by their husbands. Across town, new mother Bridget lives with her high school sweetheart Nate, and is struggling with postpartum after a traumatic birth. And nearer still is teenager Greg, trying to define the complicated feelings he has about himself and his two close friends. In most small towns, the private is also public. When one of Dalton's own makes an unthinkable decision, the community is left reeling. In the aftermath, their problems, both small and large, reveal a deeper understanding of the lives of their neighbors, and remind us that no one is exactly who you think they are. The Road to Dalton offers valuable understandings of what it means to be alive in the world--of pain and joy, conflict and love, and the endurance that comes from living.

I loved this and did not want it to end. It reminded me of my very favorite book Olive Kitteridge. Beautifully written and heartbreaking but hopeful, too.

LeslieO Good to hear! I bought it based on a positive review from Annie B. Jones of From the Front Porch Podcast. 2mo
Kimbono @LeslieO I‘ll have to seek out the podcast. Hope you like the book. 🙂 2mo
LeslieO @Kimbono Another one she recommended that seems similar is Pete and Alice in Maine. Also on my TBR 2mo
Kimbono @LeslieO Just added it to my list. Thanks! 2mo

A story of interconnected characters and events in a small Maine town. The kind of book I really enjoy and I did enjoy this one, a portrait of the daily, imperfect lives of people, private and yet never really private in a town this size.

BarbaraBB I love the cover! 😍 6mo

A little town on the border of Maine & Canada filled with a rich tapestry of characters.
The book addresses Postpartum Depression, & the aftermath of everyone left who has to deal with their loved ones suicide.
Postpartum depression is so often overlooked even by doctors that the one suffering doesn‘t feel as if she can talk about what she‘s going through.

My daughter suffered from PPD with the birth of her first baby. Luckily I knew the signs.

This was my favourite type of book - a book that explores a small town and the various lives that are lived there. This book is set in the 80s and looks at the challenges of a small, poor town and the hidden lives and desires and compromises. There is tragedy in this book, but there is also hope. An absolute gem.

On my way home to Charlotte with one of my new purchases.

RebelReader Sounds good! I‘m stacking! 11mo
julieclair Stacked. This sounds like it would be a good book club book. 11mo
Deblovestoread @julieclair The #EuropaCollective is reading it together in June 2024. If you can wait that long you should join us. We are starting with this one in September with host @jlhammar 11mo
julieclair @Deblovestoread Perfect! I can definitely wait that long, if it means I get to do it as a Buddy read with fellow Littens. I did ask to be included in the #EuropaCollective tags, and plan to read Our Fathers in September. I just didn‘t pay much attention to what was coming after that! 🤦‍♀️ (edited) 11mo
BookNAround @julieclair It would definitely be a good book club book. 11mo
