This Is a Book about the Kids in the Hall
This Is a Book about the Kids in the Hall | John Semley
18 posts | 4 read | 17 to read
"The first book to explore their history, legacy, and influence" This is a book about the Kids in the Hall the legendary Canadian sketch comedy troupe formed in Toronto in 1984 and best known for the innovative, hilarious, zeitgeist-capturing sketch show "The Kids in the Hall" told by the people who were there, namely the Kids themselves. John Semley s thoroughly researched book is rich with interviews with Dave Foley, Mark McKinney, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, and Scott Thompson, as well as Lorne Michaels and comedians speaking to the Kids legacy: Janeane Garofalo, Tim Heidecker, Nathan Fielder, and others. It also turns a critic s eye on that legacy, making a strong case for the massive influence the Kids have exerted, both on alternative comedy and on pop culture more broadly. The Kids in the Hall were like a band: a group of weirdoes brought together, united by a common sensibility. And, much like a band, they re always better when they re together. This is a book about friendship, collaboration, and comedy and about clashing egos, lost opportunities, and one-upmanship. This is a book about the head-crushing, cross-dressing, inimitable Kids in the Hall."

⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Kids In The Hall have had a massive impact on my life since I was a teenage nerd back in 1989 and stumbled upon their comedy special on HBO.
This book was far from perfect.the author - a self proclaimed "super fan", seemed overly critical & his personal observations came off as obnoxious and mostly unnecessary. But this book's still worth reading for any diehard KITH fans. If for nothing else than inspiration to drag out the old dvds.

rabbitprincess Great review, and love the photo! They were such cuties 😍 Mark is my favourite. 6y
Velvetsun @rabbitprincess I think at one point I had a crush on each of them, except for Kevin because he reminded me of my brother. LOL 6y
JackOBotts Love the KITH! Every line I wait in I look for The Son of Flying Pig. 😉 #HayHayHay 🐷 6y

I wanted to LOVE this. Kids in the Hall was an obsession of mine in high school. I quoted it incessantly and used it as a litmus test for who was cool enough to be friends with. The author is clearly a fanboy, and that may be the issue. Too many opinions and not enough facts. I did very much enjoy reading the KITH origin story, but wish the group had really been involved in the making of the book. Recommended for superfans. #24in48

Generally recommended. This is the story of the Kids told with the affection of a fan, praise and criticism included. Good endnoting and footnoting, but no photos! Alas. Read while watching sketches on YouTube or spinning the album "Savvy Show Stoppers" by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.

Emily92Bibliophile Way da go! Ok this might be a silly question- how do you put your Bitmoji into your photos? Can you go through the Litsy app when you add a photo to your post? Or does it have to be through the regular photos app that comes with the phone? 7y
PurpleyPumpkin Wow, that's an awesome pile. Great job!😉 7y
Liberty @Emily92Bibliophile I take a photo on Snapchat, add stickers, and take a screenshot. Then I delete the photo on Snapchat, crop the screenshot, and upload it in Litsy. 😊 7y

Perhaps not the most definitive #KITH book but not really trying to be. This survey does an excellent job grounding the Kids In The Hall as organic comedy that tapped into & help form a very particular late 80s/early 90s comedic pov
