The Secret of Snow
The Secret of Snow: A Novel | Viola Shipman
9 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
From the USA Today bestselling author of The Summer Cottage The forecast is calling for a reluctant homecoming and regrettable decisions with a strong chance of romance When Sonny Dunes, a SoCal meteorologist whose job is all sunshine and seventy-two-degree days, is replaced by a virtual meteorologist that will never age, gain weight or renegotiate its contract, the only station willing to give the fifty-year-old another shot is the very place Sonnys been avoiding since the day she left for collegeher northern Michigan hometown. Sonny grudgingly returns to the long, cold, snowy winters of her childhoodwith the added humiliation of moving back in with her mother. Not quite an outsider but no longer a local, Sonny finds her past blindsiding her everywhere: from the high school friends she ghosted, to the former journalism classmate and mortal frenemy whos now her boss, to, most keenly, the death years ago of her younger sister, who loved the snow. To distract herself from the memories she's spent her life trying to outrun, Sonny throws herself headfirst into covering every small-town winter event to woo a new audience, made more bearable by a handsome widower with optimism to spare. But with someone trying to undermine her efforts to rebuild her career, Sonny must make peace with who she used to be and allow her heart to thaw if shes ever going to find a place she can truly call home.

4⭐️ I thought it to be a pretty decent read. I quite liked that the author used a middle age individual as the main protagonist rather than some young thing. And that it took place over several months rather than several weeks. #2021 #romance #bookreview #bookstagram #christmas #fiction #ebook #averymerryreadathon #mistletoemaniacs #wintergames2021 +36pts

I liked this story of an older woman getting a second chance at life and love. I didn‘t like Shipman‘s tendency to tell not show. One of the characters, for example, makes a change in his life, and we are told several times how this change empowers him. It would have been more effective if we‘d seen the changes in his behavior instead. I did like the characters enough to give this a pick. Saw a blue heron on my walk. #audiowalk

The Secret of Snow is my new walking book. There should actually be 3 walks, but for some reason MapMyFitness did not create a map for it. When I got home, I found my daughter had decorated the outside of the house. #audiowalk

Reggie That walkway is lovely with the lights. 1mo

Sonny, 50 years old, made a lot of decisions she now regrets. After being fired from her job as Chief Meteorologist in Palm Springs CA, she now returns to her small hometown in Michigan. From sunshine every day to long, cold, snowy Michigan winters. There‘s a lot about Sonny that I can relate to. Because of this I could understand her running and closing herself off.

From wonderfully warm-all-the-time Southern California back to frigid, snowy Michigan.

Viola Shipman always knows how to cheer you up and keep you on the side of positive.

Another enjoyable book fans won‘t want to miss.

Viola Shipman (AKA Wade Rouse) is the real deal! His 1st Christmas novel tells the story of Michigan native turned SoCal gal, Sonny Dunes-a meteorologist golden girl living an golden sunny life. Clouds roll in and gloom takes over when the 50ish Sunny is replaced by a robotic meteorologist. Sonny has an epic meltdown and ends up returning to Michigan, to her roots, to her mother's home to heal. Part of that healing process will(cont)...

TheHeartlandBookFairy will be learning how to forgive herself and live again, really live! We honor the lives of those who have passed by living, by giving. Can she make amends to those she has hurt in her past? Can Sonny forgive herself? Can she honor her sister's life (& death) by giving, by living her own best life? And can she once again find happiness along the beautiful shores of lake Michigan? This heart warming story willl melt your heart faster than frosty melted in the greenhouse! This book had me laughing and cheering! I yelled ( I really disliked Polly Sue!) and cried. , I smiled and cheered some more and then I cried again, happy tears this time. And then I read the personal letter to readers at the end at the end of the book and, I cried again. Viola/Wade, you are the real deal and you delivered big with The Secret of Snow! As big as the Great Lake Michigan with this book. Through your books you do for Michigan what the pure Michigan campaign does for our state; You make everyone fall in love with our Great Lakes State, and they too become smitten with the mitten ❤ I loved this heartwarming story 🥰 3mo

One of my favorite local Indie bookstores was advertising the release of this one today. It is a new to me author but I'm still super excited that 1. It takes place in Traverse City and 2. It's signed by the author. I am planning on saving this one until we start seeing actual 🌨❄☃️
