Fantastic! My gosh, what a story. I felt really uncomfortable at times when young Todd and Dussander would talk animatedly about the crimes committed by the Nazis (and by Dussander himself). And the animal cruelty made me sad and sick. Just when I thought I might be growing bored, Stephen King started connecting dots and stringing characters together and Holy Moly, what a story. Overall, I loved it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was my first Stephen King book and he nailed it. I wanted to feel fucked up inside and having the slightest amount of sympathy for a war criminal, did just that. Life is full of happy little coincidences.

I‘ve been a Stephen King fan for my entire life. I love when he throws in references to his other works. I know some people don‘t like when he does this, but I‘m not one of them. Especially when they‘re Dark Tower references 😁 #darktower #ka #therewillbewaterifgodwillsit #stephenking #aptpupil #differentseasons

TheNeverendingTBR I love it when he does this! 😍👌 3y

1) I‘ve read two books by Stephan King, not really a fan but I wanted to give him a try 2) I feel like it freaked me out because I was watching Hunters around the same time and I am convinced monsters live among us! 3) I like psychological scary movies because our mind is so powerful! 4) I like Frankenstein and his bride witches jack skeleton 5) I enjoy weird art and different bookmarks!

A teenage boy, Todd, discovers a neighbor is a Nazi war criminal and had been a commander at a concentration camp. But instead of turning him in, Todd decides to...learn from him. It‘s a creepy story, hard to read at times, and apparently made into a movie in the late 90s. Not my favorite Stephen King novella, but definitely worth the read for King fans.

I‘m embarrassed to say I have never read this novella by Stephen King and I had never heard of the movie from years ago.

The time I spent reading today/tonight as I finished up this book as part of #24b42020

Overall it packed a hell of a punch for such a short story. A straight A kid discovers a neighbor of his is a Nazi general who ran a concentration camp and he wants to hear all about the horrors. This one was twisted and had a few rough moments (a cat being murdered was one). Wasn‘t my favorite of Stephen King‘s but did tell an interesting story

jessinikkip Nice! I dont have this book yet by him, I'll have to check out if my library has it 4y

TheDaysGoBy @BarkingMadRun I hadn‘t either. It was a Christmas gift last year and I needed a short read to get my last book read for the year to make my Goodreads challenge. It‘s been…kinda rough so far for such a short story. But not sure I should expect anything different from Stephen King 😂 (edited) 4y

There is something about what the Germans did that exercises a deadly fascination over us—something that opens the catacombs of the imagination. Maybe we know that under the right set of circumstances the things that live in the catacombs would be glad to crawl out. And what do you think they would look like? I think most of them would look like ordinary accountants.

Louise That‘s a scary thought! Other writers have said similar things: Patrick Süßkind in The Reader, for example, and Hannah Arendt in The Banality Of Evil. (edited) 5y
JenniferEgnor It‘s terrifying, I totally agree with Stephen King here. Monsters don‘t always look scary on the outside. 5y

A novella from the Different Seasons collection of a boy, Todd Bowden, who does well in school & one day meets as new kind of teacher, Mr. Dussander. A teacher who has a dark past & has been on the run for decades until now. Todd learns the true meaning of power & how seductive evil can be.
Note: Mr. Dussander was/is apart of the SS/Nazi movement (story takes place in the 70s) and does mention Nazi Germany and killing of animals.

The slow build of the story and the characters themselves were terrifying and made this a truly creepy and absorbing tale of horror.

The answer is: it would be boring (I think). Yesterday I didn‘t have a book to read and it seemed as if the day was never going to end. I hate spending the day on my phone and computer cause it‘s not good to do that plus I have no real social life so there‘s no one to talk to. Luckily today I bought two books as I wait for my library hold to be ready.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ll second that! I joined another audiobook site yesterday, just for the free audiobook for the first month...because I needed an audiobook ASAP...to much going on for my physical book. But whether you need fiction for an escape or nonfiction for the real story, life would be boring without books. 5y

This gets a pick from me, mostly because SK is a brilliant writer and this is so exception. BUT, the characters are gross and despicable, and my mind is still reeling from what I just read. I‘m going to read an Outlander novella to cleanse my brain lol. This is definitely worth reading if you are a horror fan. These aren‘t ghosts or killer clowns, but real life monsters - which is why they are so frightening. I can‘t wait to watch the movie! 4⭐️

Bookladylinda I hope to read this one soon! 5y

Question for everyone: I‘m reading the SK novella collection called Different Seasons, and I truly don‘t believe he knows what a novella is lol. I‘m reading Apt Pupil currently, story number 2, and it is the size of a regular length novel. Is it cheating if I split it up into four books on Goodreads? I feel like I will have read 4 books by the time I finish this and only get credit for one. 🤔

#StephenKing

GingerAntics I‘d break it up into one. I have the same collection. I would definitely break it up into 4 books. 5y
TheBookgeekFrau I don't think it's cheating at all 5y
Redwritinghood Breaking it up into 4 doesn‘t seem unreasonable for this collection. 5y
JenlovesJT47 @GingerAntics @C.Perone @Redwritinghood good! I felt like I was being cheated if that makes sense lol. 5y
GingerAntics Yeah, I think the definition of novella isn‘t well understood. If it gets beyond like maybe 100 pages or so it‘s sort of moved on to novel for me. 5y

A is for Apt Pupil 👨‍🎓

(Already a day behind...) My first thought for ‘A‘ was Annie Wilkes because she‘s one of my favorites, but I saw her a lot yesterday, so then I remembered this movie from my teen years and the fact that the short story collection is still sitting on my TBR.
#KingAtoZ

GarthRanzz This is one of the better story to movie adaptions, IMO. The story is so scary in that real life type of horror. 6y
AndreaReads @GarthRanzz I agree. It is a great adaptation—and it is completely terrifying! 6y

GarthRanzz Oh, Apt Pupil is good! And you do need to read it. It‘s one of those disturbing human horror stories where man is the monster. And hits a litre close to home in today‘s world. 6y
bibliobliss @GarthRanzz Definitely on the looming TBR!! Thanks for the rec 😉 6y
GarthRanzz Have you seen the movie with Ian McKellen and Brad Renfro? One of the better movie adaptions. 6y

Horribly screwed up in some parts but honestly, it was a lot longer than it needed to be and it ended suddenly which took me out of it as well. All in all, won‘t have to read it again and I‘m definitely not giving the movie another chance.
