Dragonfly in Amber
Dragonfly in Amber | Diana Gabaldon
From the author of Outlander... a magnificent epic that once again sweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of 18th-century Scotland...For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ...about a love that transcends the boundaries of time ...and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his ....Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire's spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ...in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising ...and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves....From the Trade Paperback edition.

Just finished and it only took almost a month. I'm left speechless. The ending, can I just say wow?! If I say too much I'll give too many spoilers. Just please read this series. So much better than the shows!

A pretty intense scene happens in an alleyway. Claire comes out unscathed, but not for her female companion.

Doing a little audio knitting this afternoon. I am really enjoying switching back and forth between audiobook and physical copy for the Outlander series. Especially the ability to speed up when bits seem to drag on tad. I do love the immersive effect of the narrators voice. #knittersoflitsy #audioknitting

It has taken me 2 years, but I finally finished it. Nothing wrong with it, it's just a bit slow. Also I tried to read it directly after devouring the first book (read that in 2 weeks), but was very put off with how this one jumped timelines. I thought I skipped a book tbh. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series, as I've heard books 3+ are amazing.

BookHoarder32 I'm thinking of skipping this one and going right for #3 🤔 2mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @BookHoarder32 I was told to just skim it, and really I should have. 2mo

Oana7 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I have read the first book and now I am looking forward to read this. Is it so bad? I loved the first book and the TV series! 2mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Oana7 It's not awful. it just starts off abruptly different from where you think it will, and I never recovered from that lol. 2mo
Poet422 I have read the entire series several times. And there is a bit of cognitive dissonance when you begin the second book but it‘s necessary for the entire series to have the proper continuity. And there are such glorious scenes to come... no spoilers I promise! But you will go back in the future and reread this series and the second book is monstrously important.... HAVE FUN & JAMIE AND CLAIRE FOREVER... 2mo

I loved book 1 in the Outlander series. I started book 2 three months ago. It‘s pretty long, so I‘ve been reading it here and there with breaks in between, but last week I really got into it around 50% and I‘ve been reading it every night before bed. Overall, I‘d give this one 4.5⭐️ - great beginning, fabulous ending, with a half star off because it‘s just too long. It definitely could have been shaved down at least 200 pages. Still, I‘m obsessed!

JenlovesJT47 Onward to book 3! (And à rewatch of the show while I wait for season 5!) ? 2mo
APLitlife I am on the third one. I am doing it through audio book. Every time I get in the car, I listen. 2mo

sammisho I love this whole series, butt everyother book seems to be really, really good. (Book 2, 4,6 ect...) 2mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @JenlovesJT47 OMG!! Season 5!! I'm trying so hard to not watch season 3 before I catch up with the books, but I'm halfway through book 1 and I've given it a break, I cant go on, perhaps it's because I've already seen the first season, but the book doesn't seem to be as dramatic as the series and I'm finding it a bit ho-hum. Does it change/get better?? 2mo
JenlovesJT47 @Lorene it does! In my personal opinion, there‘s a lot of filler in the middle of book 1 and 2, but it gets really good around 60%, then it‘s hard to put down! The show is so great. Season 3 is actually my favorite so I‘m really looking forward to reading book 3! 🤗 2mo
JenlovesJT47 @sammisho oh really?? Which one is your favorite? 2mo
sammisho @JenlovesJT47 The fourth one. The series could have ended there and I would have been okay! 2mo

Bailedbailed

Bailed on this novel. It just wasn't as interesting to me as the first Outlander book and I was getting to the point that I would rather do anything else except read this book more.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I have been reading this book for 2 years. I just can't get into it. But I'm told the rest are amazing. So I'm pushing through, slowly. 5mo
WorldsOkayestStepMom @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I'm so glad I'm not alone in struggling with this one! I probably would have kept at it, but it was on loan from the library and there was a wait list behind me. Maybe I'll try again later, or maybe this is just one of those series that I like the tv version better. 🙂 5mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego My friend said that this is the worst book in the series, and she told me just to skim it. When she rereads the series she starts from book 3. (And she's reread is multiple times) So I'm hopeful for the rest, just need to get through this one. 5mo

Because I loved outlander and the characters so much I am giving this a pick. I enjoyed getting to know new characters and finding out what happened next in the story. But there were many parts I found lacking . I think the section of the book where they were in Paris was a bit long winded I was ready for them to get back to Scotland. Overall though still a good enough story to keep me going and on to the next .

967 Pages in total, but finally finished it. 🍾 This is most definitely one of the biggest stories out there, I just wish I hadn‘t left it so long since the first one. It took me quite a while to get into it & overall not as strong as first one but grew on me more & more as it progressed. Jamie & Claire is such a strong relationship, just oozes off the page & makes these special. Oh but that ending of their story in this one. 😢 Then the twist! 😳

Six and a half years since I read Outlander, book 1 in the Outlander series. I have now finally picked up book 2, which I am doing as an audiobook narrated by Davina Porter, who I remember did a fabulous job of book 1. These books are great value for your credits - this one is 38 hours 54 Minutes long. #YearOfTheChunkster

Only problem is with a 6 1/2 year gap I can‘t remember all that happened in the first book! 😱😳

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego That's probably not a bad thing. I'm reading this one too. And it doesn't start where the 1st left off. I was so confused and put off, I didn't pick it up again for a year. But now I'm liking it. 😊 11mo
Andrew65 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Yes listened to first 2 hours 48 Minutes today and was puzzled as it seemed to be out of sync with the first one! How far are you through? 11mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Andrew65 I'm about half way through. I'm finding it's not as much of a page turner as the first one was. But I have it on good authority that book 3 and onward are Amazing, so I'm trodding along for now. It's not bad, just not quite as good. IMO. 11mo

CoverToCoverGirl A couple of years ago I listened to them all consecutively.. started in September and finished mid February.. it was an amazing journey but I was so immersed in the Outlander world I suffered serious withdrawal. And yes the narrator is spot on! I will someday listen to them all again. 😊 11mo

Birdsong28 Just finished this on Audiobook!! Definitely the best way to read this series. 📚📖 11mo
Andrew65 @Aimeesue That‘s great to hear, yet to get fully going I feel but this is still over 36 hours to go. 😳 11mo
Andrew65 @emilyhaldi That is far more sensible than me. 😂 When you read a lot of books remembering all the plots in series can be an issue! 11mo
Andrew65 @Birdsong28 I‘d agree. Davina Porter dies a great job, and these Chunksters seem more accessible this way. (edited) 11mo
Birdsong28 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I found that and I had to download the 1st one just to hear the last chapter to remind myself how it finished ( I only finished the 1st one in April 😂) and so it took me longer to get into it as I was having to think how it all went together 📚📖 11mo
Andrew65 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego You‘re going well by the sound of it. 👏 11mo
Andrew65 @Birdsong28 What a great idea! Why didn‘t I think of that, it is sitting in my audible library. You do think and try to process what happened previously even 6 1/2 years later. 11mo
Birdsong28 @Andrew65 You can be forgiven for forgetting after 6 1/2 years but after only a few months it's a bit ridiculous as it was just so confusing as I thought I had completely zoned out whilst listening to the last chapter but I found I was right and had listened to the right thing. It was just they way it was written, as I think they were released spaced out and she must have forgotten how she ended number 1 or she thought it made perfect sense. 😂 11mo
Andrew65 @Birdsong28 It can be challenging to remember books. The worst is when you start reading a book and think ... have I read this before 😊 Usually books trigger memories but struggling to remember the latter part of the first book. 11mo

Very good. I listened to the audio version of this which in my opinion is the best way to read it, even though sometimes spaces in the paragraphs don't always come across as they should.
Characters and story were even better in this book, can't wait to read the rest of the series. My only issue is how the writing in the 1960's sections is in the 3rd person whereas the 1700's sections are in 1st person it made the story a bit disjointed
