Shanghai Girls
Shanghai Girls | Lisa See
Shanghai, 1937. Pearl and May are two sisters from a bourgeois family. Though their personalities are very different - Pearl is a Dragon sign, strong and stubborn, while May is a true Sheep, adorable and placid - they are inseparable best friends. Both are beautiful, modern and living a carefree life ... until the day their father tells them that he has gambled away the family's wealth, and that in order to repay his debts he must sell the girls as wives to two 'Gold Mountain' men: Americans. As Japanese bombs fall on their beloved city, the two sisters set out on the journey of a lifetime, one that will take them through the villages of southern China, in and out of the clutches of brutal soldiers, and even across the ocean, through the humiliation of an anti-Chinese detention centre to a new, married life in Los Angeles's Chinatown. Here they begin a fresh chapter, despite the racial discrimination and anti-Communist paranoia, because now they have something to strive for: a young, American-born daughter, Joy.Along the way there are terrible sacrifices, impossible choices and one devastating, life-changing secret, but through it all the two heroines of this astounding new novel by Lisa See hold fast to who they are - Shanghai girls.

2019 Book 50: After a terrible incident while fleeing from their home, Chinese sisters Pearl and May make their way to America. They don‘t have a happily ever after in the land of the free though; they face poverty, discrimination, and fear in a foreign country that doesn‘t want them. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
I enjoyed this story of a country I know very little about, although there is one difficult to read scene involving evil Japanese soldiers.

I almost abandoned this one in the beginning because some of the tough things the sisters go through are so explicit. But I stuck with it and I‘m glad I did. I enjoyed the portrayal of the two sisters, the fascinating, courageous, and sad details of their immigration, and the historical perspective. I wish the meta narrative and perspective change would have been more fleshed out earlier on. Overall, a good book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

This book had so many strong reviews, but I just couldn't finish it. I liked "The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane" (also by Lisa See) so I will try another book by this author, but Shanghai Girls did not hold my interest. I had a tough time identifying with the main characters, but I realize that their life experiences and traits were probably right on point with the historical setting and family of origin.

I loved this book. Great historical fiction about 2 sisters from Shanghai. Takes place from 1937 on. Riveting stories and the plot surges forward until the very last sentence.
Hope there's a sequel

This was my first Lisa See and it will not be my last. I have a thing for books that take me into different cultures (especially Asian cultures, maybe because I am 1/4 Korean?) and about the tension between 1st and 2nd generations living in America.

This story of two sisters in Shanghai 1937 before/after it was bombed by the Japanese + their journey to and in America was spell-binding. The story is juicy, and devastating, and full of history.

First book down for #13books13weeks, and read for the refugee prompts for #booked2018 and #readingwomenchallenge

This was a good book, well-written, about a period of history I'm not that familiar with, so I enjoyed it for that. It's also quite a bleak book, which I don't remember feeling from Snow Flower (have I just forgotten details?) Not a bad thing, necessarily, but not one to pick up for a light escape read. Borderline Pick.

This book packs a powerful punch historically. I did not know much about Chinatown or how the Chinese were treated in America during the time period of the early-to-mid 1900's beyond knowing that they were discriminated against. Shanghai Girls lays it all out there and I'm ashamed once again that in America we have such a long-running (and continuing) history of treating people so poorly. Superb book. 4.5/5🌟

In the book, after the US goes to war with Japan, one of the characters tells Pearl the wages to be earned in a factory, building airplanes. $0.65/hour for women. $0.85/hour for men. I converted that into 2018 amounts for comparison, and now I'm furious. 😡 Conversions calculated at: https://www.dollartimes.com/inflation/dollars.php

COMMENT: if you are so lucky to be a big sister to your little sister by blood I really suggest this book. The power of the sisterhood is real and true since the moment that bloodline bond exists in real life. Love your little sister, protect her, be her guide, her soul, her heart.
