Mrs. Poe
Mrs. Poe | Lynn Cullen
Inspired by literatures most haunting love triangle, award-winning author Lynn Cullen delivers a pitch-perfect rendering of Edgar Allan Poe, his mistresss tantalizing confession, and his wifes frightening obsession in this new masterpiece of historical fiction to which Sara Gruen says, Mrs. Poe had my heart racing...Don't miss it! And make sure to check out the captivating new novel from Lynn CullenTwains Endwhere the acclaimed author tells a fictionalized imagining of the relationship between iconic author Mark Twain and his personal secretary, Isabel Lyon.1845: New York City is a sprawling warren of gaslit streets and crowded avenues, bustling with new immigrants and old money, optimism and opportunity, poverty and crime. Edgar Allan Poes The Raven is all the ragethe success of which a struggling poet like Frances Osgood can only dream. As a mother trying to support two young children after her husbands cruel betrayal, Frances jumps at the chance to meet the illustrious Mr. Poe at a small literary gathering, if only to help her fledgling career. Although not a great fan of Poes writing, she is nonetheless overwhelmed by his magnetic presenceand the surprising revelation that he admires her work. What follows is a flirtation, then a seduction, then an illicit affairand with each clandestine encounter, Frances finds herself falling slowly and inexorably under the spell of her mysterious, complicated lover. But when Edgars frail wife, Virginia, insists on befriending Frances as well, the relationship becomes as dark and twisted as one of Poes tales. And like those gothic heroines whose fates are forever sealed, Frances begins to fear that deceiving Mrs. Poe may be as impossible as cheating death itself

I have had this on my shelf for some years, and today felt like the right time to start it! Only one chapter in, and I like it so far!

KAO I don‘t always choose a book that has potential be spooky around Halloween, but I did this year. Life events prevented me from reading it quickly—and I only finished today, four days past the end of October. This was a bit darker than I expected, but I liked it overall. 5mo

I didn‘t know much about Edgar Allan Poe before starting this one especially the part about marrying his 13 year old cousin when he was 27.

I‘m actually surprised how much I liked this one! Despite the subject matter, Cullen crafts a page turner that held my interest from page one. I thoroughly enjoyed the depictions of a young New York City. I geeked out whenever other famous writers from the age popped up unexpectedly. The story is of course tragic, I mean it has to do with Poe, how could it end truly happily? A darkly wonderful read.

My #WeekendReading plans are to finish this odd book and possibly another to get a #BookSpinBingo. Not sure how I feel about this one so far. Cullen is certainly good at keeping my interest piqued, but I just can‘t get on board with the MC‘s lust for Poe. He‘s never been one I would imagine as a love interest…and affairs/cheating are kind of a trigger for me. 😅 I know from history this doesn‘t end well, so we‘ll see how it goes… 😬

Andrew65 Looks a great choice. Happy reading. 2y

I started this book over a year ago and was determined to finish. There‘s really nothing wrong with this book. It gives a nod to Poe‘s dark and suspenseful writing. But why did it take me so long to read/listen to? I can‘t answer that. It wasn‘t just not the time because when I picked it up again it still wasn‘t. But there‘s nothing wrong with the story.

This book was inspired by literature's most haunting love triangle of Edgar Allan Poe, his mistress's tantalizing confession, & his wife's frightening obsession. In 1845 Poe's, The Raven, is all the rage in New York City. Frances Osgood goes to meet Mr. Poe at a literary gathering. She is overwhelmed by his magnetic presence and finds out that he admires her poetry. She finds herself falling under the spell of this mysterious, complicated lover.

EadieB Mrs. Virgina Poe insists on being Osgood's friend. Frances begins to fear that deceiving Mrs. Poe may be as impossible as cheating death itself. The book is based on true events of Poe marrying Virginia who was his very young first cousin. I am a fan of Poe's poetry and stories but didn't realize what a romantic he was. 3y
EadieB I enjoyed this book as it shed more light on Poe's life and drew me in to get to know him even more. If you love history and poetry, give this book a try! #MrsPoe #LynnCullen #BookSpin #BookSpinBingo #August2021 3y
TheAromaofBooks Great review!! Several years ago, my husband & I visited the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, & stayed in the Dearborn Inn. Besides a regular hotel building, they also have several “replica“ houses built following the pattern of the homes of different famous people - & we stayed in Edgar Allan Poe's house! 😂 3y

I‘d call this more of a historical romance than historical fiction. It was interesting reading about Poe in New York, and I could imagine him being aloof and not the life of a party. But most of the book is Mrs Osgood bouncing between how much she and Poe adore each other and how wrong it is for them to love each other since they‘re both married to other people. It was actually quite annoying.

I mostly finished it because it was my #bookspin.

TheAromaofBooks Sorry this one wasn't a win, but at least it's off the list!! 3y

I read the book Mrs. Poe and I highly recommend it for any historical fiction lovers. It has romance in it as it is about Edgar Allen Poe's affair. This book showed me a whole new side of Me. Poe and introduced me to a litany of people. It really made me wonder how much was real and how much was fiction.

@HufflepuffGirl90 this is headed your way! I mailed it out on Saturday so it should be there soon. Sorry for it being so late (as usual)! Also, I have been looking for the bookmark my husband gave me for our anniversary. I had it last while reading the summer wives. Did I mistakenly send it to you? I have looked everywhere! 😭 It‘s blue leather with my initials. My toddler probably threw it in the trash or something but thought I would check.

Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures Yay! And no worries for lateness, life happens! I don‘t remember getting a bookmark with Summer Wives, I‘ll make sure it‘s not laying around anywhere at home tonight. It‘ll be good to check with @Mynameisacolour since I always kept the bookmarks in the books if they were left in the books. 5y

Cullen‘s envisions a non-platonic relationship between Edgar Allan Poe and the poet Frances Osgood in this historical fiction novel based upon their relationship. Whether any of this is true or not we don‘t know, but Poe was known to be a lady‘s man. I may be misremembering a scene where he visits Frances in the rain, sans #Umbrella , but it‘s clear from the early days of their acquaintance that neither wants to be “just friends.” I liked this one

KarenUK Nice pick....this sounds really good..😊👍 5y

Edgar Allan Poe as a love interest? Yes, please! Cullen looks at the affair Poe and Frances Osgood had in 1845-1846. She writes a captivating account that includes a touch of a thriller element (it is Poe, after all). The author‘s note ties in well all of the detailed research she did for the book. A perfect choice for me as a Poe follower, and even my historical fiction book group liked it!

After being abandoned by her husband, Frances Osgood supports her daughters by selling poetry. She thinks “The Raven” is trash, but is entranced by its author. As the flirtation between Edgar Allen Poe and Frances intensifies, weird coincidences make Frances fear for her life. Is Mrs. Poe as frail as she seems, or a master manipulator?

I loved the way the author wove her “what ifs” through the historical record to create the mystery/romance.

#AllHallowsRead #ScaryReads #SpookyOctober I really enjoyed this novel about the supposed love affair between Edgar Allan Poe and poet Frances Osgood based on the fact that they exchanged public love letters. Poe's wife Virginia is portrayed as a very mysterious figure, sweet on the outside but really manipulative and scheming as she tries to befriend Frances.
