I really want to reenact this scene as Belle. That‘s normal, right?!?

julesG Okay, that and the ladder scene. Strangely whenever I encounter a lovely rolling bookcase ladder there is a sign saying something along the lines of "do not to Belle" 11mo

It‘s been awhile since I flat-out panned a book but this one was not for me. The dialogue — and all of the writing, to be honest — felt so stilted. It wasn‘t steamy. And, it seemed like the author just threw in her favorite things in life (food, clothes, art) without bothering to tie them very firmly into the narrative. I almost bailed 50 pages in and changed my mind. I should have trusted myself more readily.

monalyisha An isolated detail that hilariously bothered me more than it should have: at one point, Lim sneaks in a musical reference to “Jon Bon Jovi.” Do we really need the “Jon”? 😂🙈 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly I tried to read this or another book by the same author for a book club. I couldn‘t get more than a chapter in so I skipped that meeting. Turns out they all had a great time talking about how awful it was and I should have joined 🤣 13mo
monalyisha @Clare-Dragonfly Oooof. That‘s rough! 🙈 Glad to know I‘m not alone, though. The friend I was on vacation with really enjoyed it. 😬 13mo

Finishing a book club book, fulfilling a New Year‘s resolution

Totally not on theme at all with #Scarathlon or October, but a good read just the same. We'll be discussing this at our romance book club on Thursday, and I really enjoyed this one. Vanessa doesn't like to use her magic fortune telling abilities- which can range from oh, she loves you to oh, your best friend is going to die in your arms soon. But determined to not let them control her anymore, she travels to Paris to study under her aunt. ⬇

MidnightBookGirl Romance ensues, and despite knowing that her aunt and her aren't destined for true love's match, Vanessa isn't giving up so easily. Lots of adorable family chaos and magic.

I enjoyed it. It was a quick light read! All of the food descriptions and scenery in Paris were enjoyable.

Vanessa is cursed - she predicts the future and blurts it out at inappropriate times to unsuspecting strangers and family members . Her Aunt is opening a tea shop in Paris and suggests Vanessa comes with her to take fortune 🔮 telling lessons. There‘s romance in the future. A so-so book - I can‘t recommend it.

iread2much May I ask why it‘s so-so? The plot sounds adorable 2y
Dragon Thanks @iread2much it‘s not very well written. The idea is good and I didn‘t bail but it took me a long time to read it. I guess I was disappointed-my expectations may have been too high. 💚🐉 2y

I'm behind with the #PemberLittens and on my #ChunksterChallenge goal, and I'm definitely behind in reading for work! But I'm really craving some feel-good right now, so I'll let the "shoulds" languish a little longer as I curl up with Vanessa Yu. Anyone else feeling the pull of some fun, light "happily ever after" these days? #CurrentlyReading

Andrea313 @TrishB I appreciate that so much! I tend to get stuck with the feeling of "needing" to finish books I've committed to. I'm working on letting the mood guide me, and am happy to say that today, I've nailed it. :) 2y

I enjoyed this, albeit not the best written book I‘ve read. The ending was a whirlwind, but I enjoyed the story and the journey.

4/5 - this book was a lot of fun! I am thankful for my buddy read. This book took me to Paris and gave me - food, family strife, little magic, and complicated messy romance. It‘s a wonderful weekend read. Roselle Lim gave a little bit of everything, I would have liked to flush out the Auntie more. Read with nice wine or tea- (& full tummy)you will be transported. Do not over think this, let it flow with its flaws. #poc #paris #tea #woc #magic

TheKidUpstairs I totally agree with your review. Definitely one to just relax and enjoy without overthinking it. And I could totally read more about her Aunt, she was fantastic. Now all I want to do is go stroll around Paris and eat and drink the wonderful things. Thank you for another lovely buddy read, they are always sure to put a smile on my face. 2y
KateReadsYA @TheKidUpstairs hey what's this buddy read thing about?? I'm interested!!! 2y
Blerdgal_Fenix @KateReadsYA we choose a book and give our thoughts about it. We have done a 3 and working on our fourth. It‘s pretty fun. The holiday switch by tif marcelo is our current read for the holiday ☺️ (edited) 2y

This book right here!! I need Roselle Lim to make a recipe book to go along with this. I mean the food alone got me like how much is a flight to Paris. I have been to Paris, but this book makes me what to see the Paris the main character saw. Oh an the tea flavors in the book… *chef kiss. Someone come get me before I book this flight lol @TheKidUpstairs let‘s go to Paris!! 🍾 #buddyread

TheKidUpstairs Right? She totally should have included recipes! It made me so hungry. I've never been to Paris, it's top of my bucket list. All I want to do is eat lots of food, drink lots of wine, and wander 😍 Oh, and visit Shakespeare and Co. 2y

A fun book about finding yourself. Vanessa‘s fate is to tell fortunes, but she fights it every step of the way. She wants romance in her life and is convinced that she will never be able to have her happily ever after. During her stay in Paris to help her aunt open a tea shop, she meets a very nice man who she hopes she won‘t frighten away with her fortunes…
A fun read with likable characters and yummy food!

Apparently I forgot to post my review on this one. I normally don‘t like books set in Paris, but I really liked this one. This book is definitely for art lovers and foodies, which I am neither 🤷🏻‍♀️. However I did like this book.

If Vanessa sees the bottom of a drink she spouts fortunes. She can‘t control it. She also can‘t have a romantic because of it. In Paris she learns to train and use her gifts and possibly fall in love 🤔

Got my next set of recommendations from #MyTBR #BookRiot

I was originally getting fantasy recs but haven‘t been able to get in the mood to read them, so I asked for mystery/summer recs this time.

Has anyone read any of these? I think I‘m most excited to pick up the tagged book.

janeycanuck I just finished Dial A for Aunties. It‘s HILARIOUS and a very fast read. 3y
Laughterhp @janeycanuck Oh good! I put it on hold at the library but because it‘s new, I feel like I‘m going to be waiting a while! 3y

I really enjoyed aspects of this quick read. I want keen on the love interest and found the foodie descriptions awkwardly positioned in the narrative sometimes. It was still a sweet story of a woman finding out who she is.

Been waiting in a long-ass library reserve queue for Lost Children Archive as well as Caste (which my library had yet to receive) and both became available to me this week - yay! 😁 Found the tagged title on the “new books” shelf and thought it might add a touch of easy sweetness to the stack. 🍭🍬

I read this Aug 24-28 and gave it 4.5 ⭐️. I was eagerly awaiting this book‘s publication but had kind of forgotten about it with everything going on so when I came across it in my holiday in an independent bookstore, I bought it right away. This book was a pleasant read and I love Lim‘s magical realism. I look forward to reading more of her books!

Vanessa has the family gift of telling fortunes and it happens against her will, often when she drinks tea. She's fought it but soon discovers she may have no choice. She moves to Paris with her aunt to train her abilities while her aunt opens a teashop. ⤵️

ReadingEnvy There is some romance in the book but that isn't the central story. I would say I liked the central story; sometimes the writing left a little to be desired, especially a few awkward food and tea descriptions. But overall a not quite realistic, rompy little read of self-discovery. And I definitely craved tea for days. 4y

Loved this even more than her first book! But, don‘t read on an empty stomach! I was expecting that there would delicious food and crazy Asian family, but this had more food, more magic, more family love; more everything. And I definitely wasn‘t expecting the problem that occurred in the middle or the plot twist layer. So good!

4+ stars

This book ticks a lot of boxes for me:

✅ takes me traveling. I‘ve been to Palo Alto and Paris and it‘s wonderful to be able to go for a “visit”
✅ loads of food, glorious food
✅ strong family bond
✅ sweet romance
✅ multicultural and diverse

I really enjoyed reading Vanessa‘s story of dealing with her “gift” of fortune-telling and finding out in the end where her true talents lie. So much, I stayed until 4 am to finish it.

Thanks to partner Edeweiss for the ARC of Roselle Lim‘s Vanessa Yu‘s Magical Paris Tea Shop in exchange for an honest review. The book will be published on Tuesday, August 4, 2020.⠀

The course of Vanessa Yu‘s life changed on her third birthday, when she made her first tea leaf-prompted prediction. Part of a family history of women gifted with the ability to tell fortunes, Vanessa wants nothing more than to be able to stop seeing the future. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod While her family loves having the inside track, Vanessa dreads hurting those whose fortunes pour out of her in an unstoppable flood.⠀

For those who enjoyed Lim‘s first novel, Natalie Tan‘s Book of Luck and Fortune, Vanessa Yu‘s Magical Paris Tea Shop is a worthy follow up, and I enjoyed this magical book even more!

Delicious descriptions of food, loving name-checks of art, and a fabulist storyline with relatively low stakes. The main character and her family are immediately engaging; Paris made a lovely backdrop. Just a fun, light read.
