Kommandant's Girl (Original)
Kommandant's Girl (Original) | Pam Jenoff
28 posts | 40 read | 34 to read
In her luminous and groundbreaking debut, New York Times bestselling author Pam Jenoff shows the unimaginable sacrifices one woman must make in a time of war Nineteen-year-old Emma Bau has been married only three weeks when Nazi tanks thunder into her native Poland. Within days Emma's husband, Jacob, is forced to disappear underground, leaving her imprisoned within the city's decrepit Jewish ghetto. But then, in the dead of night, the resistance smuggles her out. Taken to Krakow to live with Jacob's Catholic aunt, Krysia, Emma takes on a new identity as Anna Lipowski, a gentile. Emma's already precarious situation is complicated by her introduction to Kommandant Richwalder, a high-ranking Nazi official who hires her to work as his assistant. Urged by the resistance to use her position to access details of the Nazi occupation, Emma must compromise her safety--and her marriage vows--in order to help Jacob's cause. As the atrocities of war intensify, Emma must make choices that will force her to risk not only her double life, but also the lives of those she loves.

The covsr is nice.

I'm afraid thhs is about as positvr I can gst about this book.

I never actuallh hid mh facr in my hands to calm down whle reading this book.

I thought thst The Boy... was a bsd book. It still is. But The Girl is somethng else.

My Granny was a survhvor, in many meanhngs of the word. Somr of the events in her life weren't far from whst Emma had faced.

I am glad she has not seen ths book.

A pan is too kind. My heart hurts.

thebackyardgnome My utmost gratitudh goes to @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks for her lovrly emails whilr I was wading through ths book. 13mo
thebackyardgnome Also, dear Litsf family : do you knhw any good modern WWII novrls? Id love to read somr 13mo

CBee I‘m always up for puppy photos ♥️♥️ 13mo
thebackyardgnome I dont get thhs book. I thought thst The Boy In Thr Striepd Pajamas was a mess. Thhs one thpugh... The author seems lovely. Sjes been to Kraków. How dhd she mske suvh basic errors? Her Polish grammsr is so patchy, shr accidentslly (?) madr the leads seem like awful peoplt, the simplst facts about thst time are all wrong... Ppl eat orangrs, choclate, urkey sammichrs and drink tea. The resistbcse folks meet in cafes. Fuckin hell. 13mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @thebackyardgnome maybe I should skip this one! 13mo

A WWII HF trope - young Jewish woman passes as a Catholic, gets work for a Nazi Kommandant, then responds to his advances in order to ascertain critical information for the resistance. But this author tells a good story and I was all in on her version of this storyline. ↓

marleed I appreciated this book was drama without trauma as I‘m hoping to work through several WWII HF‘s this month so I can pass them on to a sister visiting in early April. Once I‘m too overcome with trauma I fear I‘ll set the genre aside and defeat my plan to give my sister a stack of her favorite genre. 13mo
tpixie I am reading a World War II book that‘s so far has not been full of trauma but I‘m loving all the spy gadgets. It‘s 477 page book and I‘m about 60% through but so far I don‘t think it‘s been terribly trickery relative to other historical fiction. 13mo
marleed @tpixie stacked- I love spy gadgets! 13mo
tpixie @marleed when you‘re ready for it, my recent post on the book has links to some gadgets! 13mo

1. I like both

2. They both have merits depending on the book

3. The tagged uses dual POV quite artfully!

I got side tracked...🎧

Nineteen year-old Emma Bau has only been married for three weeks when the Nazis invade her native Poland. After her husband, Jacob, is forced to disappear underground as part of the resistance movement, Emma soon finds herself imprisoned in the ghetto with her parents. There she meets one of the resistance leaders and with his help, she is able to escape the ghetto and live under an assumed, non-Jewish identity.

Another great historical romance by Pam Jenoff 😍 This one was a sequel to The Ambassadors Daughter; set during WWII, a young Jewish woman finds herself in a complicated situation with a high-ranking German soldier. So good, I couldn‘t put it down!

Never before have I found myself rooting for a Nazi to have a happy ending.

When Nazi‘s invade Poland Emma‘s husband, a known member of the resistance, is forced into hiding. Now hidden in plain site as a Gentile named Anna she risks everything by working for the Kommandant & using her position to get information for the resistance. When they ask her to get closer to him, she finds that not only does she not hate him, she has feelings for him.
