The Foundling | Stacey Halls
31 posts | 23 read | 35 to read
From the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Familiars Set against the vibrant backdrop of Georgian London, The Foundling explores families, secrets, class, equality, power and the meaning of motherhood. London, 1754. Six years after leaving her illegitimate daughter Clara at London's Foundling Hospital, Bess Bright returns to reclaim the child she has never known. Dreading the worst - that Clara has died in care - the last thing she expects to hear is that her daughter has already been reclaimed - by her. Her life is turned upside down as she tries to find out who has taken her little girl - and why. Less than a mile from Bess' lodgings in the city, in a quiet, gloomy townhouse on the edge of London, a young widow has not left the house in a decade. When her close friend - an ambitious young doctor at the Foundling Hospital - persuades her to hire a nursemaid for her daughter, she is hesitant to welcome someone new into her home and her life. But her past is threatening to catch up with her and tear her carefully constructed world apart.

Absolutely captivating. Beautiful, descriptive writing that didn‘t drag. It‘s got characters you‘ll love, some you‘ll hate, and some you‘ll be rooting for despite yourself. Not the last book I‘ll read from Stacey Hall. This was probably my favorite book out of our group reads! Going in the mail this weekend. 5/5 #litsylovewritesnbooks #litsylovereads #adventrecommends

Finished this earlier this week. The US title is The Lost Orphan. But I love the UK versions of her books so much more!

Bessie drops her daughter off at the foundling hospital the day after she was born. She saves up money for 6 years to get her daughter back. But when she shows up her daughters gone!

Not going to say much because it‘s my pick for #LitsyLoveWritesNBooks

This was put in the mail today Misty.

The second book by Stacey Halls and I enjoyed this even more than The Familiars which is saying something! The structure and point of view change work really well to keep you guessing at the characters‘ next moves. The whole storyline of a woman giving up a baby and then going back years later to collect her and she‘s already been collected, is brilliant. Easy to empathise with all the characters despite their being morally grey. Recommend!

A story about mothers and all it means to love & care for a child. But what makes you a mother? Set against the backdrop of Georgian London, Halls has created a heartbreaking story about two women from different classes doing 'the right thing'. Halls will be an author I watch & wait for her next historic novel. History is made accessible by Halls & I have never enjoyed historical fiction like I do when written by her.

Bess takes her newborn, Clara, to London‘s Foundling Hospital fully intending to go back for her when she is able. Six years later Bess goes to claim her and is told that she already has, the day after Clara was left. Who took her, and why? Loved this! Emotional and atmospheric story of London in the 1750s.

A serious book hangover was approaching after my last great read, which was also quite intense. This was the perfect antidote; historical fiction which wasn‘t at all challenging but kept my attention. A good story well told, perfect lockdown #2 comfort reading! (Very confused by the cover blurb comparison to Hilary Mantel though, I have to say...)

Cathythoughts “ the new Hilary Mantel “ .... indeed !! And you read it 😂 .... sounds good , I think I‘ll try a sample on kindle soon 👍🏻 3y
JillR @cathythoughts if I‘d noticed that comment first I‘d have run a mile 😆. But that comparison is bizarre. This is no Wolf Hall! If you fancy good but easy historical fiction it‘s worth a read x 3y
Reviewsbylola This sounds awesome!! And I‘m glad the comparison isn‘t apt—Mantel is not for me. 😂 3y

Cathythoughts Have you read Hamnet ? I‘m reading it just now ... and it‘s best historical fiction I‘ve ever read ... I‘ve always wanted to love historical fiction , but have struggled to find books that I liked ... I hope Maggie OFarrell will write more in this genre 3y
JillR @Reviewsbylola let‘s just say I found Wolf Hall a challenge... 3y
JillR @cathythoughts no but it‘s on my list! I‘m stubbornly waiting for the paperback to come out. I‘ve loved everything Maggie O‘Farrell has written so I‘m v excited to get to it...especially now I‘ve seen your thoughts! ☺️ 3y
Cathythoughts @Reviewsbylola as did I ! Very challenging, it was brilliant in parts , but as @JillR says , a challenge 3y
Cathythoughts Oh great ... I‘ll look forward to your thoughts.. so far I‘m finding it 👌🏻... 3y
Reviewsbylola Absolutely hard same. I was so excited when it came out. Bought it immediately. Tortured myself with 150 pages before I finally admitted defeat. I doubt I‘ll ever try Mantel again. 😂 @JillR 3y
JillR @reviewsbylola I did exactly the same, twice, then third time lucky I persevered and finished it which is very unlike me. I did then go on and read Bring up the Bodies which was a bit more accessible. I‘ll have to read the third at some point or it‘ll taunt me forever as an unfinished personal challenge 😆 3y

Stacey Halls second novel is just as indulgent as her first, I read it much quicker than other books of the same length; Her writing just flows. I loved the character development, and thought the ending of the story was beautiful, and couldn‘t have been more perfect. Like her first book, I found this educational also, I had never heard of The Foundling Hospital before reading this, and now I have been researching more into its history. Great read!

“The Foundling” is a historical story set in Georgian London. This was my favourite read of the year so far and I think it‘ll be difficult to beat. The story is atmospheric, the characters are strong and the history is fascinating too. It‘s 5 stars from me!

This has a different name in the US (The Lost Child). I LOVED THIS BOOK!! I think I‘m becoming a bit of a Stacey Halls fan, to be honest. Bess Bright leaves her daughter at the Foundling Hospital with the intention of reclaiming her when she‘s older. 6 years later she goes back for her, and it transpires that she was collected the day after Bess left her - by Bess! So the mystery is: who took her, and where is she? Such a good book - read it!!

I loved this story! I was looking forward to reading this book so was very pleased when it became available by way of a competition on #Pigeonhole. It‘s beautifully and atmospherically written with some wonderful and realistic characters. The Foundling is such an immersing read, so much so I was easily transported to Georgian London and I became totally absorbed into Bess‘ and Alexandra‘s individual stories. I was gripped from beginning to end.
