so-soI wanted to love this book but I found it a little boring. I think this could have been amazing but it was lacking in several areas. I don't think the world building was great, Kallia was the same person throughout, she didn't have an arc and nothing was really explained until the end in the cliffhanger which I'm not sure it was enough for me to read the next one. Also some background into her life may have helped. But such a beautiful cover!

pickAnother one I never reviewed! This book is about a female magician escaping from her job/home and going to be part of a magic performance competition. It was pretty slow moving, but I really liked something about the way it was written. Intriguing enough that I will read the second book in the duology, if for nothing else than to resolve that cliffhanger!

This book was a slow burn, at times a little too slow for what I was in the mood for, but the magical ambience grew on me and I liked the story. In the end, I gave it 4 stars for atmosphere, though I felt it could have been condensed. I do want to find out what happens next.

Set in the backdrop of a world where magic can be anything from commonplace to deliriously entertaining, this novel pits magicians against each other in battles of wit, illusion, physical feats, and matters of the heart. The danger in taking the stage is overshadowed by the fill to bewilder, and I cannot wait to see what happens in the finale act of this duology.
so-soDisappointed. The writing was inconsistent there were beautiful spots interspersed with moments of wordy, unnecessary narrative. It was too long & the pace was too slow. I could not connect with it. I loved the magic & the circus bits, but the romance was weak & wishy-washy, the misogyny was just plain annoying, & there was too much time interspersed between the action. I'm sure there is an audience out there for it, but it doesn't contain me.
