End of the World Running Club
End of the World Running Club | Adrian J Walker
Edgar Hill is 35 and caught in his own headlock. Overweight slob, under-performing husband and reluctant father - for Ed, the world may as well have already ended. So when it does end in a catastrophic asteroid strike and Edgar and his family find refuge in an Edinburgh army barracks, it comes as something of a relief. His world becomes simpler, life becomes easier, things might just be looking up. But nothing's ever that simple. Returning from a salvage run in the city, Edgar finds his family gone, taken to the south coast for evacuation by an international task force. Suddenly he finds himself facing a gruelling journey on foot across a devastated United Kingdom. Accompanied by a group of misfits that include a large, hairy tattoo artist and an old man who claims to have run around Australia, Edgar must race against time and overcome his own short-comings, not to mention 100 mile canyons and a very strange council estate, to find the people he loves before he loses them forever. A vivid, gripping story of hope, long-distance running and how we break the limits of our own endurance.

I haven‘t had a book haul in awhile, haven‘t been to goodwill (or anywhere else really) since spring break. Today on the way home from work I went by my favorite Goodwill and got all these for $8! I won‘t go again for a bit, I really am not all about getting out and doing things yet, but it was nice to have a little taste of normal.

Soubhiville I loved Finding Gobi. Nice haul! 4y
Skyrimir @Soubhiville I‘m excited about that one! I followed the story when it first came out. After I read it I‘ll probably put it in my classroom library. I have a lot of students who LOVE dogs and I think would enjoy reading this one. 4y

This book reads like a thriller at a breakneck pace and then a staggering insight like this 👆🏽will pop up and watch you take a breath. Has me thinking in this time of #SocialDistancing.

Just once, to leave the house and get on a bus and drift off for half-an-hour, get a coffee, sit at my desk, make some phone calls and put my brain to work on something that doesn‘t involve me pretending to smile at some stupid little game or getting shit all over me? If there‘s ever a book to put the current scenario in perspective, it‘s this. Yes, it‘s fiction. But the fear, the raging need to thrive, live, commune and do all those little things we‘ve taken for granted is all too real. This books holds up a mirror to that primeval fear, the gnashing of reality with the cocooned society we‘ve built up, how little is needed to make us fall apart & how little is required to bring us together. #Corona #Quarantine

Remember when I said I didn‘t finish a single book in October?? I was wrong!! I totally finished ONE! 😜🤓 Thank you Goodreads for reminding me! Yaay!! Go me!!

MotionChickness Yay! What did you think?? I bought this a month or so ago but haven‘t gotten to it, yet 😅 (edited) 5y
RavenLovelyReads @Stephuhhnieee I enjoyed it 😃 We can “talk” more after you read it . If you‘re a runner- you may need to suspend your disbelief just a little, but it was a good story. 5y
MotionChickness @RavenLovelyReads Oh good! Might be a while before I get to it, but I‘ll circle back, lol. I am not a runner, but a good friend is and she seemed interested in it; I‘ll pass the word along lol. Thanks! 5y

Power was out last night, it was oddly relaxing to read in the dark and absolute quiet.

DocBrown The thing that gets me the most about power outages is the lack of air circulation. Too stuffy! 6y

Asteroids strike Earth and throw it into a post-apocolyptic nightmare. Edgar has been a crappy father and husband, but when his wife and children are evacuated without him, he starts an incredible journey to reunite with them. The reader can choose to read this book as depressing and disheartening or as an uplifting story of human endurance. I flew through the pages at a pace set by Edgar's urgency to find his family. Photo Is of the author.

The ending of this actually made the book for me.
I liked the premis of the story but found it was almost complacent in its delivery. But maybe that's how it needed to be.

Interesting read - not sure that I loved it but I liked I more than I expected. Yes, it‘s kind of corny at times but I like to believe that optimism, kindness, and good people win in the end. I also appreciated the running bits of the story - especially how much of distance running takes place in your head. So true!

This book has been compared to The Martian, and inaccurately in my opinion. Where The Martian pits an extraordinarily competent individual against nigh- insurmountable odds, this book features an overweight manchild forced by extreme circumstances to become a decent human being. The humor found in The Martian is also completely absent here. That said, I appreciated the narrative being from an everyman's perspective, ⬇

2BR02B And the idea of the direst circumstances bringing out someone's very best self carried an optimism that's often missing in post-apocalyptic fare. And it almost made me want to go running, which is something. 6y

Sub par survival/apocalyptic story. Even worse running advise.

Characters are see though and mostly one dimensional. Writing style is quick and dumbed down. Slang doesn't even fit the geographical location.

A few parts stand out as potential of great story telling but all and all falls flat. I can't read the same situation over and over and enjoy it.

Keep an eye on the author but skip this one.

Oh, I love a good apocalypse book and this one lived-up to expectations.

The great cast of characters were well-developed and flawed in such humanizing ways. TEOTWRC is as much about finding ones-self as asteroids hitting the Earth and I think that will help this sorry transcend it's genre and appeal to a wide range of readers.

I wish my passport kept track of all the places I've traveled in books.

Day 1 of #melandprireadathon is fantasy/contemporary
.
.
I've only read a couple of fantasy books: #acotar & #theedgeofeverything but contemporary is a genre where my heart lies. ❤ I love digging into stories from other people's perspectives & watching characters evolve through growing up.

I hate to rate something so-so, but apocalypse (meteors)...survivors...must cross landscape...get to safety/family...meet danger/strange characters...whiny main character...slow pace...too long...don't think it added or took away from the genre. Not terrible, but we have so many of these books! Bonus is self published hit, so that is a plus. Good parts, but ultimately wanted it to end, not in the good sense.
