A few of those I follow post about #witchy things. I have been fascinated by the rise of these interests, where they come from, how sincere the beliefs are, and just why.

The link below is for an “orthodox“ Christian podcast. Here, they interview Tara Isabella Burton to discuss the rise of modern occultism.

I would love to hear opinions/rebuttals. I'm very curious about all this. Looking at you @monalyisha, and any others!
https://bit.ly/2m7tG2V

monalyisha My life is sorta nutty right now (switching jobs, starting grad classes), but if I find some spare time, I‘d be happy to listen/discuss! 2mo
monalyisha I *can* speak a little bit to the question of whether “witchy” beliefs are sincere...at least on a personal level. For me, it‘s less about religious *belief* & more about power dynamics (especially along gender lines), intentionality, nature appreciation, &, I‘ll admit it, aesthetic. I grew up loving Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Practical Magic, & I‘m content to let life imitate art. I think those things (gender, art, beauty) are important, though! 2mo
paulfrankspencer @monalyisha I'm sure every single person will have a different POV. I know you don't speak for everyone. That said, this is exactly the kind of detail I'm interested in. The podcast touches on elements of your reply. Thank you for taking the time to respond. 2mo

Dark, compelling, dark, charming in its own way, dark. Really enjoyed it but I suspect it's love-it-or-hate-it. Halfway between Single White Female and The Talented Mr. Ripley with a dash of Sex and the City-style Manhattan hijinks.

There‘s no one here to like. Lavinia is a needy, manipulative mess. Louise may be soulless - it‘s hard to tell.
We have such a stable society now. And experience tells me that‘s good. But I love reading stories where people look like they‘re thriving in a normal life, like Louise. And then you see she is holding on to her life by her fingernails. I wouldn‘t want to meet her in real life. But I love spending time with her in a book.

(Day 3 - #MardyBum)

*This is a story of a rich, young women, named Lavinia, who spends most of her life at parties and art openings and drinking champagne out in the open on the High Line, who meets a struggling, slightly older woman, from Brooklyn, named Louise, who works three jobs to make ends meet. Lavinia is demanding and very needy—she requires Louise‘s company 24/7. If she doesn‘t get her way, she can be quite a mardy bum.

gradcat @Crazeedi Hi back! I hope you‘re having a great weekend! ♥️ 3mo
gradcat @squirrelbrain Just an FYI: the two women can be hard to like, as they‘ve both got significant personality LACKS...I mean they are each missing something, if in very different ways, in their souls. That said, I still liked it. Just wanted to warn you. Plus @fleeting I wouldn‘t say it‘s a light, cozy read—it gets pretty dark—unless you were being sarcastic? 😂 Just another little FYI.... 3mo

Louise, aspiring writer working several jobs to make ends meet, meets the rich, beautiful Lavinia. Swept away by the decadence & party lifestyle, Louise realises there is a dark side to both of them.

I found this compulsive reading. Neither character is particularly likeable, & things quickly spiral into darkness. 4🌟

This novel tells the story of a struggling young woman in New York who gets befriended by a socialite and then decides to take over her life. This trope has been done many times before (and better). I was willing to give it a shot because I thought it could be done in a fresh way with a social media lens. However, a lot of it was predictable, and the writing style just felt really stilted and stale. ⭐️⭐️

Yeesh. I don‘t know where to begin. The story keeps you engaged but the characters, every single one of them, are just so terrible that when they betray one another, I didn‘t care. At all. Not even in a sardonic or dark-humor kind of way. I am not afraid of unlikeable characters or unreliable narrators, but this was more than that. I did think the ending was clever enough, though.

LiteraryinLititz Yeesh is right! Sounds like the kind of book that would drive me nuts. Thanks for your thoughtful review! 12mo

What in the world! Talk about disturbed! I found similarities in You by Caroline Kepnes, and possibly even Our Kind of Cruelty by Araminta Hall. Creepy, and fast-paced. Definitely a thriller. Obsession. Psychotic breaks. Wealth. Greed and jealousy. Parts of me didn‘t like it but I still wanted to find out what was going to happen. Ultimately, a pick.

UnabridgedPod That‘s so funny! I posted because I saw connections between the exact same books!!!! Seriously creepy novels 1y

I finished this book in 2 days. It was an engrossing story about obsessive friendship which is not something you typically see people being obsessed with in fiction. It also kind of had a jab at social media and how people portray themselves online vs. the reality of everyday life. It was tense from start to finish and was told from a viewpoint that kind of breaks that fourth wall, i.e. "We know Louise..." which I've not seen done except in⬇️

There are a ton of mixed reviews for Social Creature and I'm about to add to that.

This was another book I had high hopes for that sadly fell short. I had the same feeling when reading this as I did when I read Girls on Fire: distaste, dislike, disinterest. I didn‘t like anything about the characters and while there are stories I‘ve enjoyed with toxic relationships (Abigail Haas‘ Dangerous Girls and also Dangerous Boys), this one wasn‘t for me.

Well, I was intrigued by the premise—this sounded like a perfect, dark-but-light summer read. But the writing style is pretentiously self-deprecating(?!) and there is way too much dialogue and repetition. The author uses predictable plot devices and the story moves at a painfully slow pace, leans on colloquial vulgarity for shock value. Blah. I read about 60 pages before giving up.

Cinfhen So I just unstacked this book!! Thanks for your review!! Sounds like a painful read. 1y
TrishB Boo.....won‘t be reading that one! 1y

Moray_Reads Pretentiously self-deprecating, I know exactly what you mean. It seems to be a common pitfall with meets themes, it so often comes off as smug even if the writer tries to soften it with (what seems like) false modesty 1y

“...used to have a real bookstore, only he lost it after the recession because nobody buys books anymore.”

Apparently the author didn‘t know about the Litsy community 😂

wanderinglynn Because more likely he didn‘t have a solid business plan. But sure, blame it on people “not buying books” (as I look at the stack I just purchased). 1y
UnidragonFrag You know, I think this has a lot to do with location too. Where I grew up in Texas, I watched every bookstore shut it's doors. There are literally none left in that city. But where I live now I've got tons of options. (Oregon) so yeah. People still buy books.. in some places. 1y
TheLibrarian @UnidragonFrag That‘s terrible about Texas but great to hear about Oregon. It‘s such a shame when bookstores can‘t make it. 1y
UnidragonFrag Yeah, I know. It really is :( 1y
