Ask Again, Yes
Ask Again, Yes: A Novel | Mary Beth Keane
A profoundly moving novel about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the friendship between their children, a tragedy that reverberates over four decades, and the power of forgiveness. Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope are two NYPD rookies assigned to the same Bronx precinct in 1973. They aren’t close friends on the job, but end up living next door to each other outside the city. What goes on behind closed doors in both houses—the loneliness of Francis’s wife, Lena, and the instability of Brian’s wife, Anne, sets the stage for the stunning events to come. Ask Again, Yes by award-winning author Mary Beth Keane, is a beautifully moving exploration of the friendship and love that blossoms between Francis’s youngest daughter, Kate, and Brian’s son, Peter, who are born six months apart. In the spring of Kate and Peter’s eighth grade year a violent event divides the neighbors, the Stanhopes are forced to move away, and the children are forbidden to have any further contact. But Kate and Peter find a way back to each other, and their relationship is tested by the echoes from their past. Ask Again, Yes reveals how the events of childhood look different when reexamined from the distance of adulthood—villains lose their menace, and those who appeared innocent seem less so. Kate and Peter’s love story is marked by tenderness, generosity, and grace. “I devoured this astonishing tale of two families linked by chance, love, and tragedy. Mary Beth Keane gives us characters so complex and alive that I find myself still thinking of them days after turning the final page. A must-read.” —J. Courtney Sullivan, author of Saints for All Occasions “Mary Beth Keane is at the height of her powers in this novel about the sacrifices we make when we choose to build a life with someone. In Ask Again, Yes Keane tells a story about the fragility of happiness, the violence lurking beneath everyday life, and, ultimately, the power of love. If you’ve ever loved someone beyond reason, you will love this wise, tender, and beautiful book.” —Eleanor Henderson, author of Ten Thousand Saints

So far this book hasn't pulled me in.. granted I'm only 5% in but it's really not making me want to continue. Pretty boring. I hope it perks up.
I got a #netgalley ARC a few weeks ago and I'm finally starting it! 🤞🏻 I hope I don't regret requesting it.

Enjoyable saga involving two families. At the heart of it, is a love story, which began in childhood and survived some major trauma. Good read. 4⭐️

JanuarieTimewalker13 Book 27 for 2019🦚 1d
JanuarieTimewalker13 #booked2019 @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen #bookaboutaddiction I‘m guessing this qualifies bc someone goes to rehab for alcoholism but that‘s only part of the book. 1d
Cinfhen I think it does!!! I read the book and that character certainly had a problem with alcohol 1d
See All 14 Comments
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Cinfhen ok, great!! I liked this book, it‘s weird bc I went to Floral Park Memorial HS...and Kate and Peter live in Floral Park...knew the Carvel Anne spoke of. First time I‘ve ever seen my zip code in a book. I was from the next town over, but we shared the Floral Park zip. 23h
Cinfhen That‘s so weird!! Is Floral Park considered Long Island or Queens??? 16h
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Cinfhen It‘s both. I think the Queens side is called Floral Park Manor. I was on Nassau side, in Bellerose. Back in the day, I would walk up the block, cross over Jericho Turnpike/Jamaica Avenue to call my boyfriend in Howard Beach so it wouldn‘t be A long distance call...hahahaha...that‘s back in the 80s. My mother didn‘t want high long distance bills. Queens is on Long Island, so is Brooklyn, but they are boroughs of NYC. 6h
JanuarieTimewalker13 When people say Long Island, they mean Nassau and Suffolk counties. Where I lived was so close to Queens, as I got older, I just said I was from Queens and my cool factor went up...hahahaha....at least in my mind. 6h
Cinfhen My husband grew up in Far Rockaway, which is technically Queens but he went to school 10 minutes down the road and it was considered Nassau. And all his school friends lived in Woodmere, Cederhurst & Lawrence ( where his parents eventually moved) but after he graduated HS. 6h
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Cinfhen Did he go to a private school? Otherwise, he must have used someone else‘s address. Nassau school tax is high. I know for a fact there were some kids from Queens in my HS. The parents would‘ve had a fit if they knew, bc our parents paid through the nose, tax wise. But maybe there were special circumstances in Far Rockaway. I have no clue. But I had a couple of friends from Cedarhurst and Lawrence. Not all that far from Floral Park. 4h
JanuarieTimewalker13 There was great confusion in the early days when my side of Bellerose (Nassau) had a Queens ZIP....they changed that in early 80s. It‘s a very blurry line there...but funny that one side is Jericho Turnpike (Nassau) and the same street on Queens Side is Jamaica Avenue. The Nassau people always call it Jericho and the Queens people call it Jamaica. (edited) 4h
JanuarieTimewalker13 I got my Queens schooling at St John‘s U...lol...hence the boyfriend from HB. It was fun, very diverse, yet separate in those days. Now things are diverse and together...which is SO much better! 3h
JanuarieTimewalker13 But of course, the fact that it‘s not just a commuter college anymore, brings people together. Back in the 80s, it was strictly commuter. 3h
Cinfhen Yes, he went to a private school ( Jewish Day School & HS) He went to Baruch for collage and Hofstra for law school. He‘s a total New Yorker!! We met & started dating on a gap year program in Israel between graduating HS & starting college. I was at NYU, while he went to Baruch. Such a small world ( also the 80‘s) we graduated HS 1984 3h
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Cinfhen It IS a small world!!! Ooooh, NYU!! Awesome!! Baruch is a GREAT business school!! Hofstra Law, wow!! Ok, I graduated SJU in ‘84. Ok, this is embarrassing, but I knew that was the school for me bc I was Queens boy-crazy.....hahahaha...they were “cooler” than the LI boys (in my head). My mother wanted me to go to Adelphi, but I was like, “no way, lady”. I‘ve had enough of Long Island. LOL...Kids! (edited) 3h

I waited and waited and waited for this book to be released. As soon as it was, I moved it straight to my TBR. Turns out, it was worth the wait. The description on the jacket does not give a lot of information so I enjoyed how the story unfolded without the reader necessarily knowing where it was going. This is a thoughtful examination of family - who becomes family, how strong are the ties that bind? Slow, descriptive, and beautiful. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heatherfeather Just bought this. Can't waaaaaaaait 2d
cookreadsleep Oh no. When a book includes a “slow” descriptor i take that as a bad sign. I live for the action! But i already have it on hold, so I‘ll check it out when it comes in. Glad you enjoyed it! 2d
Mitch I just ordered this from over seas as I couldn‘t wait! So relieved it seems like it‘s great 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 2d
TheNerdyProfessor @cookreadsleep this is definitely a slower paced novel. It is told from multiple perspectives (which I like) but the prose is really descriptive at times. I hope you like it! 2d

This 3x3 grid completed just in time to begin anew for #BFCr2. I tagged a favorite but this time my notes tell me my least favorite is obvious.

marleed @Clwojick oh thank you. It‘s so fun for me to look at my books that way. I have a phone photo album of nothing but grids! For BFCr2, 1/3 of my grid will come from my physical TBR. A true challenge since the library overdrive, for me, is like eating from someone else‘s cookie jar! 3d

A deeply thoughtful character study that I could have easily read for another 200-300 pages. I went into this expecting a meditation on suburban ennui in the vein of Revolutionary Road but this felt more lived in. I did feel that it took about a quarter of the way to find its footing. There was almost a clinical detachment in the early going. But then it took off like a rocket ship. Definitely recommend. 4🌟.

Ah yes, literary fiction done oh so right! There were sentences in here so perfect that I would pause and reflect on its resonance through my soul (not an exaggeration people!). While there is one main event that drives the book, it is mostly focused on character development. Character driven books can sometimes bore me, however, Keane kept me engaged with her characters. Even the less likable ones.

This is a well-drawn and captivating family drama that had me totally invested in (and rooting for) the characters. The book deals with two families intertwined by both tragedy and love. This novel washed over me. It felt familiar; gently holding up a mirror to parts of my own life and buried history. My childhood was wonderful in many ways, and it was also strained (and later broken) by mental illness and its effects. For a long time this was shameful. I tried to act perfect, showing no one my pain. I resonated with how one isolated incident is never really isolated and it ripples for generations.

“Love is only half the story.”

This is my final #BOTM pick for June, and I went 3/3 for picks. I think I saved the best for last, because I devoured this book. Right from the start, the characters pulled me right in. I could hardly put the book down. It follows two families and their interactions over decades. These interactions include friendship, love, tension, and tragedy. It examines how actions affect others in a ripple effect, how people respond, and resiliency.

This book! I started out listening to my library copy of this story but was so engaged in the characters that I decided to use my 20% B&N coupon to continue their lives in print. It‘s a fascinating read of two families and the trajectory life takes following a traumatic event. It‘s a book hard to read without turning to the person next to you to discuss.

I decided to rate this book 5-stars when I realized how completely involved I became in these characters lives. Love them or hate them (and by the end I loved them all) they were real people with complicated relationships and messy lives. They were so very relatable that I really felt as though they were real people that I could have known rather than just people I read about in a book. Highly recommended to anyone who loves family dramas.

I struggled with this one. It glided along at somewhat a tedious pace. I kept waiting, and yawning, and waiting for something big and pivotal to happen but it never did. The characters were hard to keep straight at times and were quite bland. I was mostly bored, mostly just wanting it to be over, feeling agonizingly tortured.

Started this one semi-reluctantly, because I think I‘m experiencing family saga fatigue or something! I always think I love to read them, but few have excited me lately. That said, I do think this was a good one. I liked the writing, themes, and many of the characters (though some were much more developed than others). So it‘s a pick for being well-done, even if I might need to give family sagas a rest for a bit!

I get insanely excited when I choose a book and the confetti comes down, but I‘m too slow to capture the image. When I‘m done reading this one, it will be given to my friend Gigi, who is NYPD💙#botm
