A Winter's Promise
A Winter's Promise | Christelle Dabos
#1 Bestseller in France Lose yourself in the fantastic world of the arks and in the company of unforgettable characters in this French runaway hit, Christelle Dabos' The Mirror Visitor quartet. Plain-spoken, headstrong Ophelia cares little about appearances. Her ability to read the past of objects is unmatched in all of Anima and, what's more, she possesses the ability to travel through mirrors, a skill passed down to her from previous generations. Her idyllic life is disrupted, however, when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a distant clan. Ophelia must leave all she knows behind and follow her fianc to Citaceleste, the capital of a cold, icy ark known as the Pole, where danger lurks around every corner and nobody can be trusted. There, in the presence of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world. The World of the Arks Long ago, following a cataclysm called the Rupture, the world was shattered into many floating celestial islands, now known as arks. Over each, the spirit of an omnipotent and immortal ancestor abides. The inhabitants of these arks each possess a unique power. Ophelia, with her ability to read the pasts of objects, must navigate this fantastic, disjointed, perilous world using her trademark tenacity and quiet strength. An unforgettable heroine, a rich and bountiful universe, intrigue and suspense: A Winter's Promise is perfect for readers of Margaret Rogerson's An Enchantment of Ravens, Melissa Albert's The Hazel Wood, V.E. Schwab's "Shades of Magic" series, Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone, Kenneth Oppel's "Airborne" series, and N.K. Jemisin "Broken Earth" series. Extract: I think we could have all lived happily, in a way, God, me and the others, if it weren't for that accursed book. It disgusted me. I knew what bound me to it in the most sickening of ways, but the horror of that particular knowledge came later, much later. I didn't understand straight away, I was too ignorant.

I‘ve got to admit that I got hyped by my boyfriend to read this series: and I don‘t regret it! :)
I was expecting Ophélie to be a “Mary Sue” kind of character, but she stays true to who she is, as do the other characters! Thorn was specially a surprise, as I was expecting him to “soften out of nowhere” as it happens in other stories haha!
I will continue reading the series ;)

Finished my first book of the #24b4Monday #readathon

Floating celestial islands, known as arks. Ophelia lives on Anima, where the people there have the ability to read the pasts of objects. Ophelia also has the unique ability to travel through mirrors. With the sudden promise of an arranged marriage to a distant clan. Ophelia must leave her family to the icy cold ark of the Pole. Where she begins to realize her marriage is part of a larger plot.

#SelfImprovementSept Day 28: #TreatYoSelf Friday which happens to be weekend here. Husband Chef has captured perfectly my mother‘s famous meat spaghetti complete with chorizo de bilbao, which oddly enough we have difficulty finding in Singapore, but easily enough in this quaint little Middle Eastern town. Happy weekend indeed with home cooked meals prepared with much love.

I finished A Winter's Promise yesterday. I have mixed feelings.
So I loved the magic and the mystery of the world breaking. The main character is a different sort of heroine - quietly strong. However it's a loooong read and at times I wasn't really sure what the point of certain scenes was. The ending is a bit cliffhangery. I think I'll probably get round to reading the sequel at sone point but I'm not in a huge rush.

#SelfImprovementSept Day 22: #WhatMakesYouSmile. Burger for ze husband, spinach and bleu cheese pizza with drizzling of pine nuts & parmesan, and chocolate crepe with loads of strawberries. The mousy, fairly nondescript, but delightfully blunt female protagonist is quite the acquired taste, but I find that I am liking her. The world building is also not that overwhelming and gradually-paced with greater attention focused on character development.

And the price is half of that which we pay for in Singapore for the moscato 😱😍🧚🏼‍♀️ - as in oractically most things here! Awesome!

W O W. I spotted this book on the table at my favorite independent bookshop, and requested a copy from the library. The premise was fascinating: a girl who can walk through mirrors, but it‘s more than that. A mystery and complex, fascinating worldbuilding, a plot that makes it impossible to put down. Cannot wait to read the next books!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've been falling behind on my posts lately. With school starting and the first book fair only a month away I've been pretty busy. But never fear! I continue to buy books at a faster clip than I can read them ? enabled by my trusty podcasts at #bookriot and #readingglasses, who whisper in my ear, "You need to get this book." Yes, I do. I needed these books.

I've been attempting to limit my brand new book purchasing this year and so far I'm doing good. It helps that I have a little sister who occasionally buys the book for me 😉. I've had my eye on 'A Winter's Promise' for awhile and made it my March purchase and tonight @biblio_ginger and I visited the local elementary school to check out their Book Fair. She treated me to this fun looking graphic novel...each book is a part of a series 😏😅.

The characters were so alive, but I couldn‘t say that I liked them because I believe it was the authors intention to make you not like them. They‘re manipulating, cruel and dirty and I love them! The story line as well was not what I had expected.
Admittedly, I think the book could have been shorter and it spent a lot of time on their daily routine, however, when something happened, it was always unexpected.
I am going to rate it a 5 out of 5

Have you ever read a book that just painted pictures straight into your mind? No book has ever made me yearn an animated adaption so bad the descriptions were so lush-- islands of Earth and flying castles, elaborate illusions and traveling through mirrors.

And the main character's name is Ophelia-come on you know you want to read it:)

I really thought I would love this, given the gorgeous cover and all of the amazing reviews I‘ve seen. But alas, I ended up with lukewarm feelings about it. I think the setting and world-building were great and showed a ton of potential. But the plot and character development sadly did not live up to it. Also, the English translation was noticeably clunky.

So I'm legitimately annoyed that I didn't like the book.its so pretty! Right off the bat, the translation is very choppy. Secondly, there is no world or character development PLUS NOTHING HAPPENS until the very end and I just can't stand books that do that. If you're going to take 450 pages to actually introduce a plot, do something with that time! Random conflicts are thrown in without explanation of why or how they are conflicts. Ugh! I'm done!

kgriffith Oh boo! 11mo

Schnoebs Searched through your posts to find this one lol. I just watched a booktuber review this. She read it in French and said that for all the people saying that it was a poor translation that it‘s not the case. It‘s just how the author wrote it and that it was also awkward reading it in French 🤷‍♀️ 9mo

I really enjoyed the start to this series and can‘t wait to see what happens to Ophelia! It felt more sophisticated than is typical of the genre— like a Euro-chic fantasyland without pandering to young adults. I can‘t wait to read the second instalment later this year!
