#1 Bestseller in France Lose yourself in the fantastic world of the arks and in the company of unforgettable characters in this French runaway hit, Christelle Dabos' The Mirror Visitor quartet. Plain-spoken, headstrong Ophelia cares little about appearances. Her ability to read the past of objects is unmatched in all of Anima and, what's more, she possesses the ability to travel through mirrors, a skill passed down to her from previous generations. Her idyllic life is disrupted, however, when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a distant clan. Ophelia must leave all she knows behind and follow her fianc to Citaceleste, the capital of a cold, icy ark known as the Pole, where danger lurks around every corner and nobody can be trusted. There, in the presence of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world. The World of the Arks Long ago, following a cataclysm called the Rupture, the world was shattered into many floating celestial islands, now known as arks. Over each, the spirit of an omnipotent and immortal ancestor abides. The inhabitants of these arks each possess a unique power. Ophelia, with her ability to read the pasts of objects, must navigate this fantastic, disjointed, perilous world using her trademark tenacity and quiet strength. An unforgettable heroine, a rich and bountiful universe, intrigue and suspense: A Winter's Promise is perfect for readers of Margaret Rogerson's An Enchantment of Ravens, Melissa Albert's The Hazel Wood, V.E. Schwab's "Shades of Magic" series, Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone, Kenneth Oppel's "Airborne" series, and N.K. Jemisin "Broken Earth" series. Extract: I think we could have all lived happily, in a way, God, me and the others, if it weren't for that accursed book. It disgusted me. I knew what bound me to it in the most sickening of ways, but the horror of that particular knowledge came later, much later. I didn't understand straight away, I was too ignorant.

A little slow in spots but I am definitely intrigued by the world building and the political intrigue in the plot. Will be picking up book 2 when I am able.
This is also my #bookspin read for May.

An enjoyable fantasy - as other reviews have said the world building is wonderful but it does feel a little too slow at times. I‘m keen to read the next one - I think it might get faster paced. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator Emma Feeney did a great job. 🙌

merelybookish Ive always wondered about this series. The covers are so pretty! 3mo

I love when it's not clear who are trustworthy and who aren't.

The world was so unique and interesting - there were so many awesome things that I loved.

I sometimes liked the writing that was a bit different than usual. I felt like the hole book was an introduction. I am interested to see how this story continues now when the characters & world are familiar to me.

Another book where I have mix feelings. This is a confuse world with many things going on and many characters. However, I‘m intrigued to see what will happen to the main characters, Ophelia and Thorn. I want to read book 2 to see how the story goes. This is a so-so story for me but I want to continue the series, what can I say🤷🏽‍♀️3.4⭐️Im happy that I finally read it and I love that cover😍 All the books in the series have similar covers😍

Finished first book of #themirrorvisitor series, delighted by excellent world building and intriguing set up for adventures to come. (I am also trying to read the original version, though my French is very rusty, because the translation felt a bit aloof to me.)

This started off really strong with some interesting world building that had me convinced I would be buying the rest of the series before the weekend ends but then it really went downhill for me. Tons of intrigue but not much plot, I don‘t mind a slow read but this felt so overly long I was happy to reach the end.

The “next Harry Potter” this is not, but that doesn‘t stop it from being a delightful read on its own!

✨ R E A L L Y cool premise
✨ intriguing philosophical world-building

— okay characters
— plot is interesting but takes its time (can be good, can be bad)
— the romance is like, the least interesting part

Overall: A fantastical dystopia with political machinations & a decent, if tepid, romance that keeps you interested. ★★★☆☆.

4.3 ?
A whirlwind adventure into a strange new world after The Rupture. God splintered the world and divided it into arks (which floated in the sky just like the cover). Each ark are different, and each are governed by ancient human (an immortal with great magical power). Enters Ophelia, a girl from Anima with special ability of travelling through mirror and "reading" objects, she can touch any objects and she can know its past as well as ?

Weisubei The people that touch the objects. The book starts with an engagement of Ophelia and Thorn, a man from a faraway Ark with a very harsh weather and culture. The start of this book is rather slow but once you get into it, it pulls you right in and doesn't let go. I find Thorn a problematic and very cold but I can't help falling for his harsh attitude. Definitely a MUST read if you love good character developent and great magical system. 1y

4⭐️
This book was full of whimsical charm and political intrigue. The world and characterizations really reminded me of Howl‘s Moving Castle. I love that it didn‘t follow the cookie cutter model of a majority of YA books. I couldn‘t quite give it five stars because parts of it were a bit confusing and the plot was relatively slow. I am eager to read the sequel.

Booksbymybed I was thinking Howl‘s Moving Castle the whole time too:D 6mo

What is this trend of stopping YA fantasy books just as the heroine is crossing a threshold to another plane or world? This is the second time I have encountered this storytelling device. I am quite impressed with the layered unfolding of Dabos‘ story as it moves along. Nothing is what - or who - it seems. #newyearwhodis

AnneCecilie I must admit that I didn‘t think about that plot device, but then I don‘t read much YA. I was just lost in the story 2y
mrsmarch @AnneCecilie I read a book last spring for #LMPBC that had the exact same device at the end — so it was striking. 2y
mrsmarch @AnneCecilie I‘m definitely interested in the rest of this series! It‘s a quartet but the fourth doesn‘t seem to be in English yet. 2y
AnneCecilie If the book you tagged is anything like the The Mirror series, I have to check it out. I‘ve ordered it from the library that is closed at the moment, but hopefully I don‘t have to wait too long. 2y

Christelle Dabos is a French author. Some aspects of her Mirror Visitor series strike me as very French:
-Much fuss is made over people‘s accents and finding different accents difficult to understand, plus social ranking is linked to accent.
-A different attitude toward sexual harassment: “A nanny pushed a pram while blushing at the admiring whistles of workmen up scaffolding.” One loveable scamp of a character‘s hobby is seducing married women.

AnneCecilie I must admit that I never thought much about that while reading this. But the difference in accent was biggest between the arks, right? 3y
Lindy @AnneCecilie Yes, the difference is biggest between arks, but there is also an accent difference between families on the same ark. It was important that Ophelia practice elocution, not just to be louder but also to change her accent. Perhaps I read more into it than actually exists? 3y
AnneCecilie @Lindy I don‘t know. Norway isn‘t a class society as many others, at least I don‘t think so, so I never really think much about class when reading. For me Ophelia‘s language learning was to be understood in her new home, I never gave it much thought that she was learning to speak the language of the upper class. 3y
See All 6 Comments
Lindy @AnneCecilie We bring so much of our own experience into every book we read—that‘s why it‘s said that a book isn‘t the same book for different readers. 3y

Ophelia, with her tiny voice, big hair and large glasses, tends to be ignored in her boisterous Animist family. Animists can animate objects in this elaborately described fantasy world. When her diplomatic marriage is arranged, Ophelia is sent to her husband‘s ark and she must quickly learn to stand up for herself. Ophelia stays true to her morals amid vicious political intrigue within a dizzying plot. #audiobok #translation #YA

Emma Fenney is the audiobook narrator and she‘s great at performing lots of different accents. I am bothered by her pronunciation of one word, however: Citaceleste. The author has created a portmanteau name for the floating celestial citadel. I don‘t know if it was spelled exactly the same in the original French text. In either case (French or English), it seems wrong to use a long i in the first syllable (Site-a-selest). What do you think?

AlaMich It looks to me like it should be seeta-selest. That‘s how cita would be pronounced in Spanish, which I‘m familiar with. (edited) 3y
bookwrm526 Agreed, that‘s weird 3y
Lindy @AlaMich @bookwrm526 thanks for your comments. I have sympathy for narrators of fantasy novels because there tend to be so many invented words and names but this example seems like a major misstep. 3y

In this book we meet Ophelia, who can read the past of objects and travel through mirrors. One day she is told that she‘s engaged to a man from an other ark. Shortly afterwards, he comes to take har back to his ark. A world completely different to the ark Ophelia is born. Once there, hardly anything is at it seems.

I can‘t remember the last time I was this involved in the life of a character.
