Maid
Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive | Stephanie Land
Evicted meets Nickel and Dimed in Stephanie Land's memoir about working as a maid, a beautiful and gritty exploration of poverty in America. Includes a foreword by Barbara Ehrenreich. "My daughter learned to walk in a homeless shelter." While the gap between upper middle-class Americans and the working poor widens, grueling low-wage domestic and service work--primarily done by women--fuels the economic success of the wealthy. Stephanie Land worked for years as a maid, pulling long hours while struggling as a single mom to keep a roof over her daughter's head. In Maid, she reveals the dark truth of what it takes to survive and thrive in today's inequitable society. While she worked hard to scratch her way out of poverty as a single parent, scrubbing the toilets of the wealthy, navigating domestic labor jobs, higher education, assisted housing, and a tangled web of government assistance, Stephanie wrote. She wrote the true stories that weren't being told. The stories of overworked and underpaid Americans. Written in honest, heart-rending prose and with great insight, Maid explores the underbelly of upper-middle class America and the reality of what it's like to be in service to them. "I'd become a nameless ghost," Stephanie writes. With this book, she gives voice to the "servant" worker, those who fight daily to scramble and scrape by for their own lives and the lives of their children.

I tried to start #24in48 at midnight, but I was just too tired. Started this morning and was able to finish the last part of this book just in time for tomorrow‘s #BOTMBUDDYREAD discussion. 5⭐️ read for me! Being a single Mom myself (and also raised by one), I related so much to Stephanie‘s story so much.

Indiginty, stigma, heartbreak, shame and fear - Land experiences them all and more as she struggles to negotiate life as a single mum living pay check to pay check. She explores the support and injustice of welfare programmes, family and friendships and finds both humanity and disgust in the people she meets. It was an emotional book to read, but its gutsy, hopeful. A heartbreaking tale, that is both personal yet not.

Hooked_on_books Well put. I am boggled that this book has only a 64% pick rate. I thought it was marvelous. 3d

Stephanie Land came from poverty and found herself a single mom with basically no support from family and friends. This is her chronicle of making her way by cleaning houses and working hard to navigate through assistance programs. It‘s a vital look at the reality of poverty, the shame involved, and the far too easy willingness of others to judge. #BOTMbuddyread #botm

I just finished reading this for the #BOTMBuddyRead and I can't wait to discuss it! This was such a powerful, compelling, sad, true story of a single mom's enduring strength through so many hardships in her quest to provide for her daughter.

“Crying meant admitting defeat. It felt like my body and mind gave up. I did everything I could to avoid that feeling. An inability to stop crying was my fear. Of gasping for air. Of the way my mind tricked me into thinking that I might die.”

#LilithinJuly #windowseat

Stephanie definitely needed a window seat to fly away to! For this young single mom who worked hard for very little income, with an abusive ex-husband, no family, little sleep & her daily life in survival mode, the very concept of a “ window seat”was an an unthinkable fantasy.

“They were the best thing I‘ve ever eaten,” I said, beaming at him, then paused, suddenly realizing what he meant. “But they didn‘t save my relationship.”
Henry, whose house Stephanie cleaned, gave her lobsters(her first) for coming an extra day to clean for his party. Stephanie was hopeful Travis might be pleased. She served him lobster, steak, & beer. He barely cared or noticed. #botmbuddyread #MaidinJuly

Not quite 2 miles. Wanted to fit my walk in while relatively cooler & a breeze! Then I was off to a Watch Party for US Women soccer v Netherlands. What an invigorating way to spend some time today! In an air conditioned tavern with friends & family & American Outlaw members cheering these talented women!❤️⚽️

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌 2w
