This is heavy and academic. Considering how dependent on online *everything* I‘ve been this year, it also freaked me out thoroughly. It‘s 700 pages, or 24 hours of audio. Or you can watch The Social Dilemma on Netflix, hear her speak, and get the basic message in two hours. Still, I‘m glad I read it even though it‘s scary and made me mad.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds like another good one that will be tough to read... 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I honestly think I only registered about half of what she was trying to say. It‘s just not narrative nonfiction—it could‘ve used about a dozen more stories about real people at the companies and in the real world. But she‘s an academic, so ... it‘s obviously not her style. 3y

Finished!! (Still working on my final review...) This was a challenging and intense bingo board, with superb election year worthy prompts. Thanks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ! Can‘t wait to get going on the 2021 board ...

Oh my, this book broke my heart. And it made me mad! The story of U.S. immigration policy under Trump is one that must be told, no matter how cruel the story is. Soboroff makes the complex details clear, and deals well with the emotional aspects too. The story isn‘t over, so I also recommend following him on Twitter for updates.

My new listen ... not an easy one. Glad to be buddy reading with @Riveted_Reader_Melissa and @MallenNC — join us if you‘d like. We just started!

It‘s a stretch but I‘m using it for #abouthousing in the #nonfictionchallenge2020 .

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I used Malala‘s book for that about refugees. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa It was a stretch too, but I already filled my immigration/refugee square, and it was related. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa At least we think alike! I‘m down to one last prompt - cyber security. Debating between two books for it. One 350 pgs and the other twice that. Depends on what else happens ... 🤪 3y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I understand that! It‘s the end of the year and depends on your mood and time limits! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sure does. All I want is escapist fiction right now. But I‘ve got two challenge books to do and a handful of ARCs! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Haha! I feel the same, lots of escapist fiction. I think I‘ll make that a January/winter plan. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds like a good idea! I planned a bunch last weekend. 😎 3y
charl08 Wow, sounds tough. 3y

Parkland | Dave Cullen

It‘s amazing to me that just hours after the shooting occurred, MSD students began talking about rising up and fighting back. Not against their assailant, but against a culture that normalizes active shooter drills and worse, school shootings. Cullen covers their uprising, emotions, realities, and inspiring journey. Excellent on audio too!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I haven‘t read this one, but I‘ve read others about them/by them. They are so very impressive. 3y
mom2bugnbee Oh, mercy. Columbine wrecked me. I didn't realize that he had written this. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mom2bugnbee I‘m actually afraid to read Columbine. This was perhaps better because the student develop their activist streak so quickly. A LOT focused on that work. 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ve got Columbine on my shelf, but decided on this one first. I needed some uplift to go with the tragic parts. Especially right now. 3y
mom2bugnbee @BarbaraTheBibliophage Rhank you for letting me know! My college freshman's activist activities basically started because of Parkland, so this will be a very special read for all of the wrong reasons. 😔 At least good came of it. Columbine WAS a hard read, & I would think would be especially so right now. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mom2bugnbee Oh, that‘s kind of cool that your kiddo experienced some positive activism because of Parkland. Yay! 3y

I loved this memoir / call to action about the Flint, MI water crisis. This pediatrician sounded the alarm and used science to back up her patient concerns. I also loved her stories about the Iraqi / Chaldean immigrant community. She balanced work, activism, marriage, family, and kids. It‘s inspiring and could happen in any of our towns.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very good! 3y
Susanita We read this for my book club several months ago. Pardon the pun, but I really expected it to be dry and boring. It wasn't at all! She seems like a warm and lovely person, and I hope she's able to take care of herself after all those long nights and trying times. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Susanita Yes, I agree. It wasn‘t dry at all (good pun!). And my motherly instincts were worried about her well being. 3y

After a few weeks of mystery / thrillers and some lighter nonfiction, I think I can actually concentrate on the heavier fare again. Oh, and the second of the Obama Biden tongue-in-cheek capers from Andrew Shaffer. Wonder where he‘ll go with this series now ... if at all? (As an aside, Shaffer keeps commenting on my tweets ... which influenced my choice here too. 😎)

Reviewsbylola I‘m curious to see how you like Parkland. I bailed. 😬 I expected it to be like Columbine, but it focused way more on the activism of the Parkland students. Which is absolutely amazing and deserves recognition, I just wasn‘t in the headspace for it. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Reviewsbylola Well, I haven‘t read his earlier book. So I can‘t compare. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But I like the story of an activist group developing on the ground. So far, at least. I‘m a baby activist myself so it kinda makes me happy to see kids working for a better world. 3y
Scochrane26 I asked Shaffer this last time I saw him-I think it was last nov. I don‘t think he can continue the Biden series if Biden is president. He‘s coming out with Secret Santa this week (horror). 3y

I‘m giving my recent mystery / thriller series a rest (at least on audio), since this library book came in. Using this for my #nonfictionchallenge2020 #aboutinfrastucture pick since it centers on the Flint, MI water crisis.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds good! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa So far it‘s well done. But I just started. 3y

If you‘re looking for the detailed story behind voter suppression this is a good place to start. She also talks about which voters political campaigns focus on and why. And what the census means to individuals, communities, and the entire U.S. Yes, there are lots of problems. But Abrams‘ proposed solutions are sound—and inspiring.

Forman divides his book into two sections—origins and consequences. As you can imagine, the first is history of legal and police policy from Reconstruction until recently. The second is the impact those earlier decisions, like the war on drugs, have had on communities of color. Very illuminating.
