The Way of All Flesh
The Way of All Flesh | Ambrose Parry
Edinburgh, 1847. City of Medicine, Money, Murder. Young women are being discovered dead across the Old Town, all having suffered similarly gruesome ends. In the New Town, medical student Will Raven is about to start his apprenticeship with the brilliant and renowned Dr Simpson. Simpsons patients range from the richest to the poorest of this divided city. His house is like no other, full of visiting luminaries and daring experiments in the new medical frontier of anaesthesia. It is here that Raven meets housemaid Sarah Fisher, who recognises trouble when she sees it and takes an immediate dislike to him. She has all of Raven's intelligence but none of his privileges, in particular his medical education. With each having their own motive to look deeper into these deaths, Raven and Sarah find themselves propelled headlong into the darkest shadows of Edinburghs underworld, where they will have to overcome their differences if they are to make it out alive.

Highly enjoyed this historical murder mystery, especially after reading that of the two authors, one studied medical history and the premise was based on face. In Edinburgh, a “man midwife” studies with a famous doctor and realizes that someone in town is murdering pregnant women, usually prostitutes. I‘m excited for the next book! Otis is too, although you can‘t tell it. #dogsoflitsy

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1. Getting Hamilton tickets!!! Or just Lin-Manuel Miranda in general...sigh 🤩😍🤩
2. In a discount shoe shop. I lasted a day 😂🤔
3. Children of the Earth. It was a little amateurish.
4. Not really my favourite genre so don't have many to choose from. The Way Of All Flesh was fun.
5. Er, can't remember any off the top of my head but join in y'all! (If you want to, no pressure 😉)

Mehso-so

For me this was a 3⭐️ so-so. I kept forgetting it was supposed to be a mystery, although it was indeed a nicely executed historical novel. I think I just had too-high expectations for it. If Raven and Sarah have more adventures, I'll read them...

Hello dearest littens! I feel like its been forever since I've checked Litsy. Recovering from the flu and a fall on the stairs, so I've done very little the last 5 days or so (even reading).
I'm on the last chapter of this book and have some mixed feelings. I've seen the conclusion coming for awhile, and I can't decide if I like the main characters or not. I love the setting though and the writing itself is fairly good. 🤷

Megabooks Welcome back! I‘m glad you‘re feeling better! 6mo

The problem with using 3 library systems is that sometimes I don't do a great job of managing my Libby holds and end up with a ridiculous amount of books at the same time. This is only half of what came in. Luckily I am off for the next 4 days so we'll see how many I get through 📖

1847 Edinburgh and a young medical apprentice Raven joins the home of renowned obstetrician dr simpson. Raven and housemaid Sarah are drawn into investigating deaths of young women in or around childbirth and abortions.
A really good read combining medical history (surgery in lecture theatres, development of medical skills, obstetrics & anaesthesia) with a rattling good plot and characters. Hopefully there will be a sequel. Perfect boxing day rd.

robinb I loved this one too! ❤️ Apparently there will be at least 2 more books, The Art of Dying (due out fall ‘19) and A Corruption of Blood (‘21). YAY!!! 8mo

Murder! 1847! Edinburgh! Mysterious doctor-types being hella mysterious! Badass housemaids knowing medical things that educated doctors don't! Did I mention 1847 Edinburgh?! My history-loving heart beats for this. Yes, the main characters were annoying as /heck/ for the first half-ish, but as soon as they were forced to grow up and be responsible adults it was all well and dandy. Except for all the murder. Gosh, this was such a delight.

Eyelit You had me at 1847 Edinburgh 😃 11mo

4/5⭐️
I enjoyed this historical mystery set in 1840s Edinburgh. The story revolves around Will Raven, an assistant to a prominent male midwife, who along with a brilliant housemaid, sets out to solve some gruesome deaths of pregnant lower class women. My only complaint here is the length. At 400+ pages it was simply too long and could have been wrapped up much sooner. Good character development, interesting anesthesia history from that time and 🔽

robinb be forewarned that there is quite a bit of medical gruesomeness owing to the lack of knowledge/technology at that time. Apparently there are to be a few more in this series, and yes, I‘d definitely read more. However I do hope the pacing issue will be resolved in future efforts. There was not a lot of mystery solving going on until 75% through. #NetGalley #Canongate (edited) 12mo
sprainedbrain This sounds very interesting! 12mo
robinb @sprainedbrain it was! Apparently one of the author‘s (husband/wife team) did her dissertation research on the history of medicine (specifically anesthesia in the Edinburgh Royal Maternity Hospital in the 1840s), and that helped spark the idea for the series. As I said, a bit long-winded, but I still learned a lot! 👍 12mo

This sounded interesting but wasn't sure when I first started the book but within a few chapters I was hooked and wanting to know more. The plot is slower than most but builds up well. The ending was different but very clever. I liked how they resolved the situation with the killer. I also enjoyed the secret of Will's history though I figured much of it out. I also liked the developing relationship between him and Sarah.

Edinburgh, 1840s, and someone is killing young women looking for abortions. Atmospheric and full of medical history, this is promised to be the start of a crime series.

Well, what a gloriously fun romp that was! Writing so sparky it could start bush fires & characters so multi-dimensional and brimming with verve they leapt off the page and did a jig round my living room! A cracking story to boot which combined historical fact with a nasty little mystery to absolutely barnstorming effect. An utter joy basically.

CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE. DON'T MAKE ME WAIT LONG.

Please. 😁😁😁😁😁

#TBRtemptation post 3! #BEA18 Edition! Nice cover, right? To be released in August. Edinburgh, 1847. In the Old Town section, young women are found dead in gruesome ways. In the New Town, Will Raven starts apprenticing under renowned Dr. Simpson, who's house is full of visiting luminaries and daring experiments with anaesthesia. Keen, astute Sarah Fisher, the doc's housemaid, helps Raven to solve the murders. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
